So... really pleased with this. I’ve started trying to draw from my mind!! No references!!! 🙀 (warning probably took me 2or three hours while watching tele!) I was inspired by someone on Instagram who had drawn this incredible highly detailed horse and they said they used no references... it blew my mind! 🤯 But you know what? It’s just a memory test really... so I’ve decided to put my fears aside and try! I do know horses well, but it’s funny how little you don’t know when you start drawing! It’s makes me laugh! You start thinking... which way does that joint go...? How much does that bend...? How big is that...? 😂 So on my iPad, I find it easiest to block in the silhouette with a big brush, then sculpt it with an eraser. Then reduce the opacity. Then draw over the top over and over. Really pleased with the end result. I did end up using references at the end, I just couldn’t get the feet quite right! Now, it’s important to note that this only works for leggy horses, although I still find it really useful. So since finding this tip, i always measure the length of the horse (using the standard artist pencil measuring technique!) then see how the height compares. so still sketch out a square as a starting point, but the legs just get shorter depending on the breed.... When ever I’m sketching a horse I always draw an arch before I put in the ears.
