Final Evaluation
19th April 2020
Unfortunately during this time, completing my full final project has been a very difficult situation. Without all of the right resources and information there is no way i could have completed everything that i really wanted to complete. Besides all of the difficulties, i have managed to get some research done and some digital drawing. I of course couldn’t complete an Animation but i worked to my full potential creating digital drawings and a story script and some costume designs, all of my work is in my journal, i have taken pictures of every completed page and put it into my onedrive folder. Although i would have loved to make an animation, these difficult times have rendered it impossible for me to do so.
Although i would love to say more about it, there isn’t much i can say. I have worked as hard as i can as well as trying to focus on myself and others during lockdown. I hope in the future i can make my ideas into a reality for real next time and i can work to my full potential doing what i wish i could’ve done this time around.
Overall i really enjoyed the process of the project of what i could complete and i wish things could’ve ended differently.

Monday 9th March
Today I began working on some research about Fantasy, Isekai anime and Parallel universes. I made small little cards with basic research and information as a starting platform for my ideas to expand, i will think of each card and help myself to find more ideas linking to the theme to help broaden the horizons for an even better outcome on my project. I looked at things such as Colour Schemes, Fantasy, Isekai anime, Parallel universes and Parallel universe theories.
I also had to fill in a peer assessment sheet about project proposals.

Friday 6th March
Today at home i completed the first two sections for my first draft of my project proposal. I sent it to Joel for monday morning. Here are my first two sections.
Section 1
During Stage 1 and 2 of the year I have made a lot of progress using my wacom tablet and the Adobe software. I feel I have gotten much better with Photoshop especially, for example, for a piece of work during Stage 2 I created a short animation, for the theme of ‘What Remains’, of someone drinking and finishing their cup of coffee. For this project I drew every frame in Photoshop and then saved them all as separate images to then take into Premiere Pro CC so I could play them all together and make it an actual working Animation. I feel I am good at tracking my progress and looking back to see how I have improved with things over time. I feel I have gained skills on my own and with the help of others. I also feel I have learnt to become more comfortable with my work and to not hate everything I create as it is all just a learning process and practice is the only way I can get better. If I don’t like a piece of work as much as I should I call it practice and start again. I feel I have also learnt a lot more about Animation that I never knew before from writing an essay about it to researching into it for purposes of my own creations. My reason for choosing Animation is that I admire many Youtube animators who create content for a group of people big or small. These people inspire me as they can tell stories to their audience about whatever they want, wether it be a life experience or a movie summary and rating. I’d love to be a Youtube content creator one day as i’d like to become the person I always aspired to be. Of course I still have a lot to learn but that is what I am here learning for. I’m excited to dig myself deeper into the Animation Industry and work hard for my final major project making sure I touch in something that I passionately want to be creating so I can enjoy the process and work to my full potential.
Section 2
My idea is to look at the themes of Fantasy and Different dimensions. I want to look at the way artists show that the scene is from a fantasy and not the real world. I also want to look into how using colours make things look more fantasy like. For example when the artists in the Anime ‘No game No life’ use red outlines for most things instead of black and lots of different colour blends to show how it is set in another world. There is no green grass, there is just lots of pinks purples reds yellows and every colour that isn’t normal to the real outside world. I want to use the internet and books and also visual research using movies and tv shows to look into different dimensions and fantasy worlds. I want to look into peoples actual beliefs about other Dimensions and what they think they could be. I want to do lots of experimenting with colours and shapes to make my work look as good as I can make it. If I was to change any ideas along the way it would be okay because it is all a means of experimenting and practice until I get what a final result I am happy with.

Tuesday 3rd March
Today i worked from home and did some journal work. I wrote up a little evaluation for the past week and also looked into what i would want to write for my first draft of my Project Proposal. For now i only have to fill in Section 1 and Section 2.
I will continue to research into my themes of Fantasy and Parallel Universes. I want to look into different storylines of Isekai anime and also look into theories about Parallel Universes. I want to know what people around the world think and feel about there being other universes where we, ourselves are doing different things and making different decisions.
Some forms of research i’d like to use are:
The internet, Books, Manga, Art, Anime, Movies and TV shows. I may also use social media to get inspiration from aspiring artists all around the world.

Monday 2nd March
Today i got another reflection sheet, this sheet asked me questions to do with what kind of actions i will take to lead me further on in my project. What themes i am interested in and so on. I have decided i want to look into the themes of Fantasy and Parallel Universes. Fantasy in Anime is called “Isekai” which literally means ‘A different world’. I enjoy this type of Anime storyline and i want to look further into it for my project.
I created my visual mind map consisting of my images that i printed. I spoke about what from the Anime i enjoy and what kinds of things i want to take from the art style specifically. For example, In the anime “No Game No Life” the artists use red outlines and lots of different ethereal colours to represent that they’re in another world. One of the main characters hair fades into multiple different rainbow colours and personally, i think it looks beautiful. I would love to try and interpret this in my own way and experiment with it.
Here is my Visual Mind Map.

Thursday 27th Feb
Today i attended a tutorial to get Feedback from my Stage 2 work. I passed all 3 Units and got only good feedback. I want to continue working at my best so i can make the most of this final project and expose my potential.
I have also found 10 images to use in which i will add to a huge piece of paper and make another mind map, this time Visual and describe what i want to take from the images to add to my idea of a concept and theme. I will also talk about what i like about the images i chose and what about the Anime the images are from that i enjoy and would take inspiration from.

Tuesday 25th February
Today i made a mind map filled with ideas on things to look into to begin to head down the path of deciding what i want to actually create during these next few months. I filled it with any idea that came into my head. For example, things to research, things to draw and practice, ideas for my actual project etc.

Final Major Project
On the first day back we had a talk about the FMP. We had to hand in the First self evaluation sheet that we did over the break as well as think of ideas for our project proposals. There wasn’t too much done on the first day it was more or less just reflecting on past work and thinking of new ideas, themes and concepts for my upcoming final project.

Rotoscoping Critical Review
Over the time off i tried to complete my rotoscoping project. My project was a boy flying through the air with a balloon. I managed to complete it, my only issue was the lines around the boy were way too thin and there was no way for me to fix it no matter how many solutions i tried. Eventually i figured out a way to fix it and i sent all the scanned images over to photoshop to thicken the lines by messing around with the curves and levels then i replaced all the original files with the old ones and re done the rotoscoping animation with the thicker lines so that you could see the boy clearly and crisply. I was inspired by this by the scene in IT chapter two where Pennywise is flying over Richie Tozier with balloons. I think my perception of this ended up looking pretty well.
Although i had a few original problems such as, scans being emailed upside down, thin lines, slow laptop, too many files etc. I managed to work through all this and discover solutions to all of my problems. I’d say i’m very proud of the final outcome for the time period that i had and especially for my very first Rotoscoping Animation i’ve ever done. I wish we could’ve had more time because if we did i would have spent time colouring and shading the guy and making the background look much more distressed and ‘abnormal’. I would’ve also make some small animations of things moving past him in the sky such as birds or butterflies etc.
Overall i’m very proud of myself as this is my first rotoscoping animation and but i wouldn’t mind doing them again if i can do it on the computer because i definitely didn’t enjoy drawing up each and every frame one by one.

ROTOSCOPING ANIMATION Small Evaluation. Here is my rotoscoping animation i am quite proud of the way it turned out due to the small time frame that i had, i wish i could’ve had longer so that i could’ve added much more details such as extra animated background fillers and colour to the boy and balloons but nevertheless i am still proud of this outcome considering it is my first ever rotoscoping animation.

Rotoscoping Research
The Lord Of The Rings, 1978
The Lord of the Rings is an adult animated high fantasy film directed by Ralph Bakshi. It is an adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's high fantasy, The Lord of the Rings, comprising The Fellowship of the Ring and the first half of The Two Towers. Set in Middle-earth, the film follows a group of hobbits, elves, men, dwarves, and wizards who form a fellowship. They journey on a quest to destroy the One Ring made by the Dark Lord Sauron, and ensure his destruction. Ralph Bakshi found and loved Tolkien's writing near the beginning of his career, he had made several attempts to produce The Lord of the Rings as an animated film before being given funding by producer Saul Zaentz. The film is notable for its extensive use of rotoscoping, a technique in which scenes are first shot in live-action, then traced onto animation cels. It uses a hybrid of traditional cel animation and rotoscoped live action footage.
I like how this links to my work as my rotoscoping idea was inspired by the movie, IT Chapter 2, in the scene where Pennywise is tormenting Richie Tozier. He flies above the town statue with balloons as Richie looks up scared for his life. This inspired me to make a rotoscope of a boy flying across a distressed sky with some balloons. The reason this research links to this is because Ralph Bakshi enjoyed the work of Tolkien and wanted to remake it due to his love and awe for the director. Much like i wanted to remake and be inspired by this scene from IT due to my love for the movie and the directors skill and creativity.

31st January 2020
Today i completed my memento animation. Here is the final result.
Critical Evaluation
For this project i originally wanted to create a rotoscope animation of some memories that i have recorded on my phone. I was going to take each video and rotoscope each one and label it as a kind of dream sequence. I stuck with this idea until i realised i was quite over ambitious considering the small time frame that i had to complete this project before hand in on Thursday the 6th.
I then had to come up with a solution to face my problems and get the animation done in time. I decided to rotoscope only one video of the memories i had chosen and stick with the idea of Dreams. I decided i would rotoscope the original video and the turn it into a surreal environment that looks ‘out of this world’. I ended up turning the river environment into an outer space cartoon feel which is very colourful. This still shows the importance of the memory for me as it is displaying something as so much better than it originally was which shows how a normal thing for someone else is something so crazy and important and memorable for me.
Overall, i like the piece of work but i feel i could have done much better in some aspects if i had a little more time. I wish the animation was smoother and maybe looked more realistic. But i feel i did well for the period of time i had. I managed to surpass my issues and produce a final outcome that links to the project brief and still displays what i wanted it to. Rotoscoping is not one of my favourite animation styles so i believe i proposed myself with a challenge and went through and completed it as well as i could and for that i’m quite proud of myself for the outcome.

Critical Evalution - Memento - So far -
Today i have been working on completing my animation for the project about Memento. I have encountered some difficulties during the creation of this project but have finally found solutions. Originally, i was going to create a rotoscoping animation as a sort of ‘Dream Sequence’ of memories from my life that i have on film on my phone. I thought this was special as they are moments that look like normal life to everyone else but to me they are special memories. During creating this i realised that i would definitely not have enough time to do everything i wanted and realised i was way too ambitious due to the deadline being so close. I changed my idea slightly so i could fit it in the time gap. Instead of rotoscoping multiple videos have only chose one video. With this video i am going to turn it from a normal scene into a sort of ‘galaxy/in another world’. This way it still links to being a so called dream sequence as it turns into something crazy and surreal. This helps back my idea of how special memories to me are too as i’m turning a memory into something even better to show how much the simple scene means to me and how it makes me feel. I am almost finished with this animation and although it has been tough i am sure i will love the outcome. Here it is so far.

Research
A Scanner Darkly
A Scanner Darkly is an animated science-fiction thriller film directed by Richard Linklater, it is based on the novel which goes by the same name by Philip K. Dick. The film tells the story of identity and deception in a near-future dystopia constantly under intrusive high-tech police surveillance in the midst of a drug addiction epidemic. The film was shot digitally and then animated using interpolated rotoscope, an animation technique in which animators trace over the original footage frame by frame, for use in live-action and animated films, giving the finished result a distinctive animated look.
I really enjoy the look of this movie and the way it was created. I think the outcome looks very pleasing to the eye, almost as if it was painted with oil paints. A plus is it also features a cast of amazing actors such as Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Woody Harrelson and Robert Downey Jr.

Thursday 16th January
Today i continued working on my animation linking to the theme of mementos. I have decided i want to do an animation on a few memories that i cherish with the important people in my life. Obviously i can’t do too much because there are so many but i will take some videos from my phone do a rotoscope of them on photoshop. I hope this turns out the way i want it to. Here is what i have done so far, in a day and a half.
