My little sister has breast cancer. If you know me at all, you know my sister too. We've been inseparable since 1985. Everything I've done in my life, Audrey has been by my side. As you can imagine, a cancer diagnosis at any age is terrible; 36 and a mother of two small kids is just plain awful...and the fact that it's the same type of cancer that my mom had 8 years ago makes this journey more deeply personal than we could ever have imagined. Having said all of this, Audrey has a really good prognosis. She caught this illness early with preventative care, good doctors and expedited treatment. Just last week, she had her double mastectomy surgery and we were all relieved to find out that the cancer had not spread. The fight is not over for her though...she has a couple more surgeries, a year of continued treatments, probably hundreds of doctor appointments and the rest of her life to monitor her illness. This fight never ends. Our family and friends are doing the same walk we did for my mom in 2014 with the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides" foundation. They raise money for everything related to breast cancer; truly this organization does it all...car rides to treatment, lodging for family members during surgery, clinical research grants, the resources are endless. If you can, walk with us. The event is 10/30/22 in Las Vegas. We are all dressing like a bunch of beanie babies and the team name is "Beanie Boobies"...cause it's fun and why the hell not?! If you can't walk, please consider donating. Any amount is helpful. Our family has been so fortunate with our access to care for this disease, but many are struggling and "Making Strides" continues to be a significant difference maker in the lives of those touched by breast cancer. I'll end this with Audrey's own story as to how she discovered her tumor...she felt it with a self-exam. Women, please please please do regular exams on your boobies. Cop that feel and it could save your life. Do it for yourself, do it for your future...I know I do it for my own baby girl who I sure hope never has to deal with this diagnosis. Big love and hugs! Six years old. Whew, these birthdays seem to be coming faster and faster. Grant loves hunting for bugs, watching Steve Irwin (and crocodiles) and, predictably, wants to be a zoo keeper and rescue animals when he grows up. He’s my introverted, hard playing, always outside, usually dirty, big hugging, calculating man with the plan. Happy birthday to my forever birthday buddy. Labor Day weekend will always be lit with you ❤️ #grantman https://www.instagram.com/p/CiFsbP9Lgo1hIG3koQFnbhiyhbbIJ8XcP5gItE0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Wisconsin barn kittens…doesn’t get much better than this. So enjoyed watching my little people love this same little farm that I used to go to when I was a kid. Also: there were lots of other animals at the farm, but G and Winter definitely loved the kitties the most. #thefarmsturgeonbay #raisingcatpeople #raisingthemright 😻 (at The Farm) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf2_fnvO5_Oy_W2z0suPzQETQ50JwuLw5fJ7Vo0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

100 days of school. Sometimes I still can’t believe I have kids let alone a dude who can almost read and counts past 100! These past few months of Grant being in TK has been so cool…watching him learn big things and make friends and most importantly finding a little bit of himself. Scroll to the end for a color shot of my handsome timeless chap. Shoutout to Winter for being a perfect Pleasantville addition to our 1960s styled shoot 😂👴🏼 #100daysofschool (at Coronado, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZfga2VPS8RAMwgS53j_zydy-OI-VFMDcJJym80/?utm_medium=tumblr

We went to @omasfamilyfarm over the weekend. They’re a functional farm with lots of animals, but my kids were really just interested in the ancient high-risk-of-getting-tetanus farm equipment…plus, they grow Christmas trees! It was almost 70 degrees, but we still got in the spirit! Hard to put into words how much my life changed five years ago today. Sometimes it feels like forever ago and other times it feels like just yesterday. Regardless of the day or mood, Grant will always be the one who made me a mama. He is a fierce, intense and introverted and so just much like his Dad…but he looks like me 😎. He loves any sport with a ball, but especially golf and baseball. His favorite colors are blue and orange and this morning when I asked him what he wanted to be when he grows up he said a fire truck. Dream big buddy, the world is yours. #imcrying (at Coronado, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTaIMSRpZ6dtm2diw1EVQXM2aZi9Fv7DzOE5hE0/?utm_medium=tumblr

This is the second year that I’ve done photos with just me and the kids. Once I made photography my business I told myself I would have so many great images of me and my family…and it was kinda true…for everyone but me. There was little to no proof of mom beyond an iPhone selfie here and there. So last year I decided on a mid-lockdown whim, to have my friend @lauralophoto do a quickie beach shoot with me and my babes. It was amazing. She captured us in a beachy raw element that made me feel like a fun mom. Fast forward to this year…we moved across country and she still managed to meet me in Joshua Tree for a shoot. Grant tried to pick up a handful of red ants within the first five minutes and both kids weren’t having the 100+ degree heat and cactus prickles, but somehow Laura created magic again. If you’ve read this far, please do yourself a favor and remember to take the picture. Life is always changing and you’ll never regret taking more photos. And if you need me, I’ll be a puddle of emotions looking at my babies not being babies anymore 😭 #stepsoffsoapbox #somanychins #toomuchass #allthejoy #lauralophotography #mybabiesarentbabiesanymore (at Joshua Tree National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CR5XvPEjat6niPr6xKCX0Xz8yifrGCUNerTeAI0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Andy and the kids indulged me and we ran around Balboa Park for Mother’s Day. I’ve been a lot of cool places on this planet, but it’s hard for me to think of a single location that is more special to me. This park has seen so many of my life’s phases and I still manage to find new nooks and little places to explore. Extremely grateful to be living just a few miles away from it. #justamomwithacamera #kidpaparazzi (at Balboa Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CO3v5j7jwPLFb5rZyUzO5k0mfVYsiqXPdc2Hk80/?igshid=1ir7dtqth8c8w

I solo vacationed with the kids to Pioneertown for the weekend so Andy could do our taxes. I bought them each a metal hand grabber from Amazon before we left and they basically ran around the desert for 3 days picking up whatever the hell they wanted (pats mom self on the back). We were all filthy and chapped and tired when we left but it was worth it. #hopewegetarefund #pioneertown #wildwildwest (at Pioneertown, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNx4cu6j2CY9gAjaXDYk7ozsI666Nt5ZP-t-k40/?igshid=180u5ml074gmi

What a weekend! Took the kids to Big Bear for the first time. We saw “so much snow” which translated means we saw small ice piles hiding in the shadows on 65 degree sunny days. These Florida kids just don’t know any better! Spent such a nice time with some dear friends @aztxwamom, visited the Big Bear Zoo (there are snow leopards!!!) and I barely managed to survive a hangover that just a few hours ago I thought might take my life. Would I chug white wine straight from a bottle at midnight again? Probably not, but besides that I wouldn’t change a thing. #bigbearlake #forkliftfamily Snapped a few of the kids after we got home in the backyard because what the hell! #justamomwithacamera #grantandwinter (at Big Bear Lake, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNjW4eRDEHnrhQLSNQAncg5_xUybEUoOU-YapA0/?igshid=139xirxkmgq52

This was the second weekend we went to Cabrillo National Monument. The kids love the tide pools, hiking around the eroded shores and watching the surfers. I timed it better this week with low tide (read: I got lucky) and we were able to climb down and find crabs and anemones. It was a lot of fun and I did it without Andy, which even a year ago I would have never dreamed. At 3 and 4 I finally think we are starting to reap the benefits of having our kids so close in age. They do everything together and I think they genuinely like each other too (for now—haha). COVID has been so fucking weird, but watching my kids be each other’s only friend has been one of the raddest silver linings. So here’s a few photos of my babes exploring...I hope they stay like this forever. #littleexplorers #grantandwinter (at Cabrillo National Monument) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMua-p-DfFsngcp6pHqm-YxpO37o13vZuZGSWA0/?igshid=14oj04i7fqjkp

This beach has become our family’s happy place...which is kind of funny considering how much pain and agony has been suffered on these beautiful sands. Finished editing our road trip gallery from August (oops). Once again realized that I take way too many closeups of my little gal. I’m not mad about it though.
