Behind the Work

When first presented with the theme Encryption for my Digital Media unit I was uneducated on its meaning. Once looking into different definitions of the word, the main link that came to mind was  the idea of distortion; creating unrecognizable forms out of a preliminary matter. I chose fingerprints as my starting point as each print is unique to the individual; featuring a lot of detail through line and form making it ideal for further development. I also liked how the idea of encryption was not only applied to the print, but  also more philosophically to the individual’s identity.    

As my experimentation shows I had a variety of great options to generate a final work out of. I gravitated towards these three prints for my final as I felt they were very particular,  the  manner in which the embody both a chaotic yet harmonious nature through composition and formal elements.  

I didn’t want the works to look like copies of one another, however I wanted to keep a sense of cohesiveness between them. I played around with different forms, and lines to achieve an aesthetic balance between the works. I opted for a square foundation as I wanted its uniformity to somewhat enclose the scattered spontaneity of the forms.

Experimentation Leading to Final

At this point In my experimentation I feel I have created a good foundation for me to see which works are aesthetically appealing and which aren't. Although I gravitate a selection of my works I feel that my favourite styles are “Personal Experimentation 27″ and “Personal Experimentation 31″. As far as “Personal Experimentation 31″ I feel I need to further develop the piece, for example maybe add some black filled shapes to add a better sense of structure to the forms. 

from now on I will be focusing on these two styles, seeing which outcome I prefer, I will be creating a series of 3 works.

Personal Experimentation 32 Original Image: Personal Experimentation 30 Over here I have furthered my experimentation 30 a subtle touch of colour, still using Illustrator. Unlike my previous experiment with colour I have only added one colour to the form rather than two, to stick to the simplicity of the artwork,

Personal Experimentation 31 Original Image: Personal Experimentation 20 Over here I have applied the same process as “Personal Experimentation 29″ just working with different shapes/lines, to maybe gather a series of these forms to then work together as a final piece.

Personal Experimentation 30 Original Image: Personal Experimentation 29 Over here I have furthered my experimentation 29 and added subtle touches of colour, still using Illustrator. I used a burnt orange and complementary sky mint blue to pop off each other. I also brought the black lines forward for to add structure back to the forms.

Personal Experimentation 29 Original Image: Personal Experimentation 20 Over here I have selected specific forms from “Personal Experimentation 20″, I then ungrouped them and manipulated the lines further to get a better aesthetic. I then rearranged the composition of the forms slightly off centring them. Although very simple I find the organic flow of the lines just work so effortlessly with one another.

Personal Experimentation 28 Original Image: Personal Experimentation 26 Further experimentation with both stroke/fill traces, this time added into Photoshop and manipulated further with the selection tool and distort Zig Zag filter.
