An Optimistic Analysis of Tyler and Wednesday's Relationship

There's been a lot of crashing out today, but I'm still feeling optimistic.

First, going back to one of the interviews, the showrunner said that Wednesday's relationship with Tyler was the closest she was going to get to love, and that's exactly what we saw.

Wednesday is obsessed with Tyler. She seriously considered the possibility of Tyler being behind the murders, even though he was locked away. That's kind of crazy. Then, it's revealed that she requested court approval to see Tyler weeks before any of the murders happened. She wanted "closure". Closure? A girl who prides herself on burying all her feelings wants closure?

And then don't get me started on the way she insulted Tyler. She calls his looks “generic” and his barista skills “subpar.” She's deliberately attacking her attraction to him and their good memories together at the Weathervane. She's clearly still in love with him, and it hurts her. She played Prokofiev's composition Romeo and Juliet with so much pain that the music teacher commented on it.

Moving onto Tyler, he still loves her too. There's hope from his side too that Weyler could happen.

In the first scene, we first saw the Hyde part of Tyler, up until Donovan's death is mentioned. He was sinister and manipulative but also happy to see her. There’s a bit of warmth in “I knew your morbid curiosity would bring you here.” He knows Wednesday. He still thinks about her. He’s angry with her, but that’s not the only emotion he feels.

Even before this, the Hyde’s always been attracted to Wednesday. At the dance, when Wednesday says she’d throw the bullies to the piranhas again, the Hyde says, “I knew there was a reason I liked you", and they dance. That is telling framing: they bonded over violence, and then they almost kissed.

But is there any of the “normie” Tyler left that could counteract the evil? Yes! When Wednesday blames him for Donovan’s death, he looks sad and regretful for a moment, and his response, “You got me, Wednesday, I’m a criminal mastermind pulling the strings from in here,” is bitter sarcasm that reminds me of the old Tyler. Think back to the scene of Tyler and his dad in the second episode. When his dad abandons him again, Tyler yells after him, "Oh geez, Dad, I thought we’d catch the big game and fire up the grill". There’s a bit of our old Tyler there!

Now is the point where you’re probably thinking, he fucking defenestrated her. How do we come back from that? It stumped me a lot too, but what’s helped me is first considering how he tried to kill he (if he tried to kill her at all, anyway). The Hyde’s MO has been to use its claws to slash its victims, and serial killers don’t usually change their MO. But here, we have Wednesday thrown through a window. Why is that?

The second thing is that he hesitated. He stared at her without making any motion to hurt her. He did this too back in the forest in the season one finale. He pulled her closer to him, internally debating something. There’s a part of Tyler that wants her dead, and another part that still loves her, but the violent part of himself keeps winning out. We have no idea if he can hold back the monster.

That brings us to my final point: how few scenes Tyler has had. We mostly hear about Tyler from external sources. Sheriff Galpin sees the son he could still save, Wednesday sees a monster through and through, Dr. Fairburn believed he could be rehabilitated, and Thornhill saw a monster she thought she could control. This is very fitting for a Hyde, but none of that is the real him. We know nothing yet of what he’s going to do or how he feels. But there is one thing that should give us hope:

When he escaped Willowhill, he didn’t try to kill anyone. He threw them aside and ran into the night. Maybe he just wants to be free of the past (that’s actually the narration over Tyler’s part in the teaser—“what we are really haunted by is our past”). That’s not a villain arc. That’s the seeds of a redemption arc. Now that Tyler is free, he can decide who he really is: the monster or the boy who could be redeemed and find his way to love again.

Finally, remember that the official merch was a t-shirt that said Love is Torture. That’s what’s making me think I’m not just hallucinating. Weyler could still happen!!!

My Wyler heart never lost faith even with Tyler’s hateful attitude toward Wednesday because I suspected he was angry with her about locking him up and treating him like he was less than because he was Hyde.

Cause yeaa he was killing people but basically everyone in Wednesday’s family whom she loves has done that so it really shouldn’t have been so significant much less off putting for the girl who filled a swimming pool of teens with flesh eating piranhas.

He had a valid reason to be angry.

But after watching Season 2 pt1..

Tyler told Laurel it was her fault he was locked up.

When he saw Wednesday he accused her of multiple things but he never even mentioned that.

The only one lying to themselves is you. You sensed the Monster in me..you fell in love with it.

We’re two black hearts ready to pillage the world together..

and when Wednesday tried to deny it he immediately became angry.

You think you’re always the smartest one in the room but you’re not.

He then moves on to threatening Enid when he sees her walking away, just to get a reaction out of her. If you pay attention to him in that scene he looks terrified watching her leave.

And even his ending to his threat to Enid..

I want you to be haunted by her screams for the rest of your life.

None of his dialogue does he blame her for him being locked up. He blames Laurel for that. Hates her for it. Kills her for it.

Wednesday on the other hand..his dialogue and his interactions with her suggest something else.

He is angry with her, but not fully. When he sees Laurel he hulks out and grabs her almost immediately. With Wednesday he only gets upset when he feels she’s rejecting him. When she claims not to care..

He’s angry with her because he still loves her. And because she betrayed him.

He always saw her for exactly what she is and he loved her for it. But the minute she saw him for what he truly is she threw him away. She abandoned him. Rejected him. Betrayed him.

No doubt he’s been telling himself she would come back for him, that their feelings were real and they were strong enough that she wouldn’t be able to resist them forever.

And then she rejects him again. Tells him he’s delusional.

And even though he knows she’s lying, it makes him angrier and angrier.

Tyler is in love with her and his anger and even possible hatred (for now) for her stems from that.

And she still loves him too. Made clear by the tears in her eyes when she finally does leave him behind and the soft way she mentions him when she finds L.O.I.S. Even the way she doesn’t flinch when he finds her in the hallway.

She doesn’t even look angry in that scene. No hatred, no resentment. She looks at her stalker with more contempt than that.

She is calm, unafraid. She knows she has retribution coming. She knows she would do the same if she were him.

What Tyler has wrong is I don’t think she wanted him locked away because he was a Hyde. It was for two reasons.

1. Tyler was being controlled by Laurel who is a nutjob and therefore he couldn’t be trusted.

And 2. which she keeps secret because it’s personal and is the actual reason why she’s personally angry with him..

He made her feel like a fool.

Wednesday prides herself on knowing things others don’t. Literally seeing things others would miss. Putting things together.

Her draw to Tyler was unexplainable to her conscious mind, and she always knew that. She fought it in the beginning because of it. But in the end she couldn’t keep her heart from falling for him. And still she never figured it out.

Tyler bested her. Which would piss her off probably a decent bit under any circumstance but with Tyler being puppeted by Laurel, Wednesday more than likely assumes his feelings for her were never real. In her mind, she got played. Her first time falling for someone, only to realize she was being played for a fool.

She’s furious. Because she’s embarrassed and probably a little hurt.

Which is exactly why she sees what happened to him as revenge. Because it’s personal.

Tyler never did anything to her to warrant wanting revenge. But in her mind, it was all a lie. And her feelings were real. And she was hurt by that realization. So she felt wronged.

If she thought Tyler was a victim and had real feelings for her she would’ve tried to help him. But she doesn’t. She thinks he used her and tricked her and is still trying to play with her through her feelings so she wrote him off.

She abandoned him.

Their attempts at hurting each other, desire for revenge and tit for tat are faaar from a deal breaker. If anything it only further proves how perfect they are together.

Ideal situation in my opinion would be Wednesday becoming Tyler’s master and wielding him as a weapon. I can so see that working out for them.

Tyler getting to love, protect AND serve her while Wednesday gets to be with someone who understands her bloodlust. Who would never try to tame her chaos, who would accept her for exactly what she is. Who could keep her safe instead of the other way around like she does with every single other person in her life.

The Addams would most certainly take Tyler under their wing with open arms as well. Gomez would probably beam with pride that his little black widow found someone who would be so devoted to her as he is to her mother AND has bodies under his belt???

Oh god. Oh no. I just realized. Helena thought Mark liked HER. She thought that because Mark liked Helly that meant Mark liked HER cause Helly is her. Helly is part of her. That’s why she called for Mark when Irving was pulling her toward the water. She thought Mark would save her. And now she has to rectify with the fact that Mark didn’t love or even like her. Their whole thing was only because Mark thought she was Helly. Mark doesn’t care about Helena at all. And she’s gotta deal with that in her head now. That’s another person in her life who doesn’t love her. And this time it’s even worse. Because he likes someone who IS HER! It’s her body! It’s her brain! But he still doesn’t love her. She’s still not loved. But another version is loved so much by three whole people they’re willing to sacrifice themselves!!!!! Helena is loved by no one. She even had to almost beg Milchick to save her. No one was coming to save her. Because they don’t love her they don’t even like her. They love Helly.
