Full Bloom Spell

~ A spell to renew your energy and manifest abundance on all levels ~

gather: petals, selenite, and sunny spot in nature

Begin by laying comfortable on a blanket. Feel the warmth of the sun, the fresh smell of spring.

Place the flower petals on your heart chakra. Feel nature grounding and renewing all of energy.

The roots beneath you pull down and transform negative energy to positive energy.

Wind carries away all your worries and brings blessing to replace them.

When you are ready, stand up and scatter the flower petals in a circle moving clockwise.

Thank nature and leave a little biodegradable offering.

Extra: if you work with crystals: use black tourmaline and selenite to cleanse and ground during this ritual. If you work with spirits invite them into your space to help conduct the ritual.

This is my video that I will be exhibiting for Unit X at Cass Art Manchester’s underground space on the 9th of May

I’m really pleased with how it turned out and I think it conveys my feelings and conflicting about the countryside and the urban environment. 

I particularly like the way I made the captions flicker less when I’m in nature, which I intended to come through as more stable and grounded.   I also enjoyed experimenting with colour and this was a slightly more experimental video than I have made in the past- I think the openness of this unit x option has allowed me to expand my horizons because I wasn’t with my usual tutors, there was no preconceived ideas of how things should be and the outcome wasn’t intended to be professional and polished. I have wanted to incorporate plants and nature into my videos for a while now and this was the perfect excuse to do this. I definitely will be looking further into this idea of queerness, psychogeography and phenomenology.

Over easter I was really struggling to get into reading my chosen text, but also to make anything and do anything at all. Being away from the studio and my community is really isolating. Having ADHD and struggling with the effects of executive dysfunction is a challenge I face every day and somedays it’s immobilising and incredibly hard to even do basic things let alone make art, or read a complex philosophy book. I managed to start reading some of the book after much struggle and resistance but this was why my chosen pages are from the introduction and conclusion, they were attention grabbing when the rest of the text was daunting and unmanageable.

I started adding subtitles to my video which can be viewed HERE (password is ‘Gina’) I wanted the subtitles to convey my poem and ideas, but also wanted the subtitles create a sense of unease and something not quite working with their glitching and flickering.  I wanted the viewer to be drawn in and curious to find out more

Under/post grad informal crit group

I attended an informal critique group ran a CP lecturer (Gemma Meek), and two students from my course, where there was an opportunity to present and talk about your work/projects with other undergrad and also postgrad students and get feedback.

I presented my initial sample clips real which can be found HERE (password is ‘Gina’) and also my poem about being born of the soil but not safe there.

The consensus was that my poem being read out was powerful, and they even enjoyed the sound of me turning the page, and we talked about how that could be interpreted into the video. 

I did let them know i intended to include subtitles, but I wanted to look further into recording my reading the poem out. I didn’t go any further with that as I decided subtitles communicated what I wanted within the video and also I didn’t want any sound playing.

It was a very valuable experience and i’m really glad i went, learning to talk about your work is very important and even the preparation and doing that was a very good experience of just being able to articulate my ideas to strangers and colleagues.

I really liked the image of the two models in a fashion magazine. And this Proenza Schouler advert, the combining of nature in the video but also the distortion and making it unclear what it was was what drew my attention.

I liked the voiceover in the video and not actually the sound from the recordings.
