faith in humanity

on sunday september 8, i went to a concert with my mother and grandma.

at the concert, they had a DJ

after the first two acts, the DJ was playing music and “God Bless The U.S.A.” by Lee Greenwood started playing

and everyone stood up and started singing.

a few rows in front of us, there was this boy sitting down who was in a wheel chair (i had seen him before the concert started) because of a disability.

and when the song came on, i saw him say something to his parents.

his parents and two other people helped him stand up during the entire song, and both him and his parents had the biggest smile on their faces.

that family made an unforgettable memory that night.

and that’s the story of how i started crying during a concert and i didn’t even feel guilty for crying in public.

“And I’d gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today, cause the flag still stands for freedom, and they can’t take that away.”

Straight back when you begin then suddenly you’re lounging on the floor. Greyscale. Minimal colours for effectiveness. Writing down everything. Actually paying attention in class. Auditory learner. Wanting perfection. Trying to pull an all nighter but failing.

Managing everything. Working out in study breaks. Architectural sketches everywhere. Motivational quotes for inspiration. Thinking back on how far you’ve come. White desk. Having a clean study space until you actually start studying. Teaching yourself things.

Paint speckled notes. Music blasting through headphones. Messy desks. Hair hastily pulled into a bun. Getting distracted easily. Random doodles on the sides of textbooks. Smart but doesn’t show it all the time. Study groups with lots of people. Quizzing each other. Collapsing on your bed after a long study session.

‘I give up’ you say as you continue. Pushing yourself. Trying to beat the system. Piles of notebooks. Stretching your legs. Studying in bed. Using a laptop instead of writing. Study playlist which doesn’t help. Organized for two minutes then it ends. The sound of rain.

Can we just talk about Brendon Urie for a minute? 

Some people may be happy that he came out as pansexual. 

Some people may be sad. 

Some people may be mad. 

Some people may approve. 

Some people may not approve. 

But we all have to take a minute and think. 

Think about how much courage it took. 

Think about how hard it must have been, but he did it anyway. 

It’s difficult to come out. 

But he’s in a famous band that almost everyone loves. 

He knew that people would support him. 

He knew that some people may judge. 

But think about this:

It’s not going to change the way their music sounds. 

It’s not going to break up their band. 

If I was in the band I would be beyond proud of him to come out to everyone. 

But since I’m a fan, I’m still beyond proud. 

Band members get hate. 

Whether it’s about how they look.

Whether it’s about the way they sound. 

You can never make everyone happy. 

People are going to disapprove. 

People are going to think everything has changed. 

They’re going to say, “I miss the old you.” 

“You’re not the same.”

“I can’t believe I was a fan.”

“You’re not loved.”

But the only thing that has changed,

Is our love for him. 

Our respect for him. 

Band members are always someone to look up to. 

Now, this just gives us another reason to look up to them. 

So, thank you, Brendon Urie. 

Can you imagine how many people were inspired to do something they’re afraid to do. 

Can you imagine how many people came out to their families, friends, and loved ones, all because someone they look up to had the courage to do that, too. 

Thank you.
