Welcomed Darkness

A rather annoyed stream of consciousness.

That's the thing about college: there's no such thing as darkness here. The lights are always on. You'll wake up at 4am and walk down a fully-lit hallway to fill your water bottle. There is always light pouring into the window; the streetlights are on from before dinner to after sunrise. Even with a lowered shade and blackout curtains, the light still creeps in at the edges of the window and under the door. There is the glow of phones, of laptops, of the mini fridge when your roommate gets hungry and decides to grab a snack. It sounds nice, at first. It sounds like you're never alone. But loneliness in daylight is worse than loneliness by night. Nighttime was made for lonely souls. The constant electric light pierced holes in the peaceful darkness. I haven't slept well in months. I grew up in the woods; I sleep better when it's dark and I can be woken up by the sun.

I wrote this after a solid few weeks of being quite annoyed at the constant light in my dorm room, to the point of rolling up a towel and shoving it under the door. I'd rather be at home.

okay but saying "i wish i had known you sooner" — like the love in my heart is growing so big and fast for you that i wish i had the opportunity to have you way earlier by my side, because i want to love you longer than i can do now. my love for you reaches my past and makes a place for you.

how to be your campus' resident disney princess

[one of my friends called me my school's resident disney princess and I think that's the greatest compliment I've ever received]

• pastel and/or bright colors

• skirts & flowy things

• balance along the edges of the sidewalks

• flower crowns

• picking dandelions

• leather shoes

• color coded folders & notebooks

• bringing tea or coffee to class

• balance on rocks

• take notes in cursive

• fountain pens

Tomorrow's my last first day of classes. I don't think I like that.

I'm looking forward to graduating, of course, but I don't want to leave this place. I don't want to leave the structure, the people, the schedule, the running-on-adrenaline-and-empty-until-I-crash-again. I don't want to not be a student. I don't want to be done. I've been building my identity around being a student and doing well in school since almost as long as I can remember. I don't know who I'll be without that. I don't know if I want to know.]]

i know we’re both just messing around pretending to be whole but look at me. if the train was coming would you move. if the ground was falling from under your feet would you even notice or would it just be another tuesday for you. if somebody stabbed you could it hurt worse than you already do. what i’m saying is that i love you but i think we both drive over the speed limit when it’s raining. what i’m saying is that i want to hold your hand and i understand about how you sometimes have to sit down in the shower. what i’m saying is that i’m here for you and if the train comes please move.

Life is a time and a half.

I love it and I hate it and I want it to be over and I never want it to stop. I laugh through it, cry about it, I feel numb for so long that I forget what anger is. I want to climb trees and scrape my knees on the stone wall in the woods and build a fort and fly a kite and play dress up and cry myself to sleep and wake up with songs stuck in my head and remember my dreams and play guitar and sing at the top of my lungs when nobody's home. I want to burn candles and bake bread and feel everything too deeply and miss everyone too much and laugh so hard it hurts.
