“But there comes a point at which rational people have to put adorable hijinks aside and recognize otters for what they are: disease-ridden, murderous, necrophilic aqua-weasels whose treachery knows few bounds. They are not "wonderful animals," . . . They're merciless hellspawn who use their intellects for great evil. Here's what you need to know about these terrible animals, and why you should fear and hate them.”

Tumblr media
We will:
return to the Jeans unit
do another “glossary” exercise
try to replicate the “aha” moment / process from today about Tom Sachs, & explain it using the Jeans unit
those who were absent are the audience for the explanation -- if they don’t “aha” then we’ll need to improve our explanation
maybe new material?
Tumblr media
also, jeans are cool but smoking is bad so don’t do it
oh, and here’s this and this -- for entertainment purposes only

Also: as of this week, no more homework cards.
I think we’re past the point where we need them. Everything should be in your notebooks anyway.

Tom Sachs Tom Sachs Tom Sachs : a glossary of key terms & concepts
[Re]watch the interview video that Taylor found for us
[Re]read the articles you have & haven’t read
there are more on the Unit 7 post below the “read more”
if you find something new that’s really good, send it to me and I’ll post it
Meanwhile
collect a list of his key terms (like “authenticity” and “sympathetic magic”)
there are lots -- list all of them that you discover
choose one and collect everything he says about it
try to understand what he means when he talks about that concept
meanwhile
try to hold back on how you react to what he’s saying
or try to separate your reactions and keep them separate
Goal: a Tom Sachs glossary that explains all his key ideas, based on his own explanations

Process
Tumblr media
Identifying your Topic
Recognize that the topic that interests you may be too large to work on directly
this is so common you wouldn’t believe, and it leads to many bad papers!
∴ you need to recognize that what you thought was a topic is really a subject and then reframe your focus
you do this by narrowing and bracketing your topic
(in a typical paper you can use this narrowing & bracketing in your introduction)
How to Narrow & Bracket
collect and review a number of general articles about the subject
read these sources to identify different aspects of the subject and as you read, ask these kinds of questions
what are the issues within the subject?
what questions are being discussed?
what controversies emerge from these discussions? what problems are people trying to solve or figure out?
who’s involved in those discussions?
who’s affected by those discussions?
what different perspectives and positions emerge? (do they cross over into multiple discussions, or are they fixated on separate discussions?)
note that you will come up with multiple answers to these questions; what you find will be lists rather than specifics
these lists may overlap or get confusing so mind-mapping is an excellent tool for this stage of the process, even if you don’t like it -- but outlining can also work
review your map and identify one aspect of the subject -- one question, controversy, or problem; this is narrowing
make note of how this aspect, this topic, relates to the larger subject and be prepared to explain why it is particularly interesting; this is bracketing
Then proceed with your process (haha)
