The Impact of Being Chosen - The Mentalist Season 1

What does being chosen over and over above everything that a good person values do to Patrick Janes's self worth over time?

Season 1 demonstrates significant character growth for both Jane and Lisbon. Like everything in this show it's subtle - shown, not told, and perfectly in line with their characterization.

In the flashback in 5x05 (Red Dawn), Lisbon sees what Jane can do as potentially very useful to her team and offers him a way to use his skills that can help instead of exploit people. Jane views her as and objectively good person, so when she continues to like and respect him even as he slowly reveals his sins and weaknesses like his mental break down (Red Brick and Ivy), he can begin to internally resolve his painful past.

In 1x11 (Red John's Friends) Jane quits the CBI when ordered not to pursue a Red John lead, and Lisbon and the entire team ignore Minelli's orders to focus on helping Jane. Hunting a serial killer fits within Lisbon's personal mission, but she chooses Jane over obeying the rules and risks losing her job and put her career in jeopardy - even though she thinks he's being played.

Jane's realizes her sacrifice and his trust grows. In 1x17 (Carnelian, Inc.) he realizes that this trust isn't reciprocated, and he makes a point of telling her directly that she can trust him, he will be there for her no matter what, and he wants her to know this.

We see them begin to work more in sync as the trust grows. Lisbon begins taking greater roles in his stings, and they start communicating wordlessly. The writing shows this in 1x21 (Miss Red) when they come to the same conclusion about where the body of the missing businessman is - under water on the anchor of his boat.

In 1x23 (Red John's Footsteps) Lisbon calls Jane out for his suicidal focus in catching Red John, say that there are people who need him and he should stop being selfish and childish. As an indirect result of their increasing trust and understanding, he involuntarily chooses to save Lisbon by shooting and killing his only viable Red John lead, Sheriff Hardy when he pulls a gun on her. This action shows that he again has ties to living - he now subconsciously values something as much or more than his quest for revenge.

That's significant growth for Jane over the course of a season, and it's the direct effect of being chosen and valued. Lisbon rarely verbalizes this, but the choices she makes and the things she's willing to risk for Jane tell him that he's worth something to her (and to the team as well).

This is incredibly important to a man who is highly sensitive and reactive to being mocked or denigrated and impacts his choices moving forward.

Helloooo dears 👀 when you have time and energy....I thought of another parallel seeing a post you reblogged. The times Lisbon said she needed Jane. Currently I could only think of two times, so they're good if you can do those. In S5 when they meet and then probably in S5 again when she says I need you and he replies Anything for you, Lisbon (unrelated it knocks my breath out just remembering)
