I have recently got into Newsies and I have a lot of thoughts about how Jack is like...this guy who cares deeply and is confident (at least when someone's looking at him) and is kinda jaded and closed off but he's also (particularly in the film) so naive and vulnerable and *young*. Whereas Davey has led a somewhat more sheltered life in some ways and has adults in his life who care but he's also so adult in a way that Jack isn't. Jack has dreams, Davey has ambitions and a lot of them aren't even really his ambitions, he has basically his whole family's future riding on him getting an education and getting an ideally middle-class job but at least one not in a factory. Jack sees himself as a mentor to the newsies and he sees them as very much his but he won't put a label on it in case that means he's stuck, in case that makes it real. Davey sees the newsies as his comrades even though he doesn't quite understand them, he sees his responsibility to them as a responsibility to the group. Jack will fight for them, Davey will fight it out.

Platonically or queerly (and let's be real you don't stare intently at your straight buddy fully making out with your sister while evidently wishing you were in your sister's place without a little bit of homoeroticism involved) they just slot together really easily but at the same time really rock each others' world- David literally gives Jack something to believe in (sorry Katherine, love you), Jack gives Davey back some of the joy in life he's lost sight of under the pressing responsibility he feels. Compelling stuff.

modern au where jack and davey meet at a con but jack isn't super into con-culture, he's just there bc race didn't want to go alone. not that he hates it! it's really fun, just not his scene.

but then he sees a 6'5 guy in a spiderman coaplay- not just a cheap costume, one that actually has semi-working web shooters and moving eyes and other details like that- and jack falls in love. like legitimately falls head over heels for this dude. bc he may not be a fanboy but Fuck he really likes superheroes and hot guys. and it becomes his mission to 1) see him without the mask and 2) get his number (if he's gay).

but plans don't always work.

jack manages to get a picture with him under the guise of showing his little brother back home, and they start talking a little afterwards so the guy pulls the mask up above his nose and mouth, but everything else is still hidden. jack swoons so hard he can barely talk. it's not his fault this God of a man is really hot and also funny and nice

they do have to go their separate ways, though, after some pretty heavy flirting- No Name Spider-Man had to go find his friend, who jack knows is named "Kath" because she called him and he said her name. it sucks for jack bc jack was super into the flirting and he felt like they were getting somewhere, too. but Spider-Man has to rush away and that's the last time jack sees him.

until! he gets to the hotel room that night and all he can talk about is the Spider-Man guy. race is sick of it so he posts the photo on Twitter with the caption:

hey if you were spidey at the con today and you have a bestie named kath: my brother thinks you're really hot. dm so he'll shut tf up

and what started as a harmless little tweet goes semi-viral with everyone trying to find this guy. kath sees the tweet, sends it to davey, and davey makes an entirely new Twitter just to talk to jack: but he still won't take off the spidey mask.

thus begins their flirting. davey remains anonymous and jack remains falling head over heels for this dude who's face he doesn't know. he eventually learns that his name is David, eventually learns he lives in Manhattan, eventually learns that they even go to the same university. this carries on for weeks; they flirt and talk about anything and everything, from how their day is going to what their weekend plans are to their deepest darkest secrets shared over Twitter DMs at three in the morning. they get really close, but the mystery is still there: who is David? jack can't find his main account, and they only talk on the Spider-Man account David made for that original message.

it's by random chance that jack stumbles into a little hole-in-the-wall café off campus where his barista sounds eerily similar to spidey from the con/spidey from voice memos on twitter.

barista boy sure is smiling at him a lot. barista boy has a spidey tattoo behind his ear. barista boy's name tag says David on it.

jack pauses his order. he puts two and two together.

"...Found you. Hi, Davey."

"Hi, Jackie. I don't know whether or not I should be creeped out or flattered."

"Wh-- Oh, no, I wasn't- I didn't, like, stalk you or anything, I'm so--"

"How about you make it up to me by taking me out to dinner?"

"Fucking finally. You're on."

no bc the LAYERS to this?? like not only is it a public figure cheating on his wife and the mother of his TWO children. his entire personality is loving his wife he was the goddamn legend of LOVE. AND he didn't just cheat on his wife with some random woman it's his PRODUCER! and bc hes the owner of the company thats his subordinate! AND alex (his producer) was ENGAGED! and you would think "oh well shes not the focal point of the channel shes just a producer so why do people care about her relationship" BECAUSE THEY WERE ACTIVELY MAKING VIDEOS WHERE SHES PLANNING HER WEDDING!! we saw her try on wedding dresses! they did a whole bridesmaid dress video!! like she was also very publicly in a relationship about to be married. Honestly it is frustrating that they aren’t more open sometimes, but it’s moments like this where I realize they’re right. Like it’s x10 worse because he made his brand how much he loves his wife. Showed it off. The other try guys are public about their relationships, but they don’t romanticize it and put the pressure on it. Idk I’m rambling. I’m just glad I’ve stayed a huge dnp stan because it’s a fact this won’t ever happen to them. There’s a few YouTubers left like that. Dnp making that cut. And it’s partly because they’ve been really strategic about what parts of their relationship they tell us about. And to be fair, if this were to happen to any of the try guys, I’m least upset about it being ned. I feel awful for his kids. But i was least emotionally invested in their relationship. Now if Keith cheated on Becky, I would’ve gone off my rocker. Cheating always becomes so much more tragic and complicated when kids are brought into it which is just saddening. Also can we talk about how the cheating, especially with a CO WORKER, puts the rest of the company in jeopardy?? I digress. Yeah you’re right. It gets annoying how private dnp are and how careful they are about what they share, but in hindsight, that’s probably why they have the strong relationship they have. Because it’s between the two of them and not the two of them and the rest of the internet. I really do believe they love each other because they were put under the shittest circumstances and still found a way to get through it and at least end up in a healthy relationship. I’m rambling. Just shoutout to dnp for being smarter than straight people despite their relationship having been x10000 more difficult than fucking neds relationship.

My heart aches for Ariel knowing Ned’s entire “MY WIFE” thing was just a charade that he hid behind to profit off of his wife and family, not giving a care to the damage this would cause not only them, but his supposed best friends he started an entire company with. 

He’s thrown away a marriage and livelihood and I hope Ariel and the kids are able to heal past this.
