one of my best friends, kar, needs money for bills and their sick cat niamh. trouble is, kar has also been out of commission with a bad bout of covid for over a month now.

they don’t have the $400 they’d need for their fat’s vet appointment, which would consist of either a blood panel or putting niamh to sleep. same cost either way apparently ):

i first posted about this over a month ago, but i’m posting again because no one has helped and i want to try for my friend. niamh has been a huge emotional support for kar through surviving in the south as a queer person, through the covid years, and then moving across the country when not even their family has been properly supportive (which is part of why they had to move!). i know niamh is “just a cat” and times are tough for everybody right now, but kar has kept me sane and grounded through some of my darkest moments, and i know how much niamh helps kar, and trying to help is the least i can do.

i don’t want to guilt anybody, i know it’s tough out here right now. i just have to try, you know?

"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.

It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).

Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.

One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.
