Phrases
In my family, let me start off with the De Guzman clan, we have this unusual and unlikely habit of making a scene during important occasions in our lives. For example in a wedding we last attended wherein my cousin was getting married.
During the offertory of the Holy Matrimony, I was not able to walk towards the altar along with the flowers because I was crying. Let’s not get on with the details, my aunt said, “Lagi na lang tayong gumagawa ng gulo!” (We are always making a scene!)
During our Christmas Party celebration, we would always group ourselves into two teams that would compete against each other. “Team Asim” (sour) and “Team Almo” short for Almoranas, will play a series of mini games; the cheers of each team is the most awaited because this is the part that we usually coin the terms that we discuss throughout the year.
On the Esteban clan, my aunt always uses this expression whenever she is afraid for the person or when the person she is referring to made a mistake. “Nako!” (Oh no! there is no specific translation, just an interjection). Her daughter and I find this expression contagious because we find ourselves using this often as well.
Two of my younger cousins were nicknamed “Tuytuy” (little boy) by our clan because this was a tradition that we did not remove from our bloodline. Their real names are Joshua and Lord John.
Inside my own family, we are a family of six and surprisingly we have created a number of expressions for ourselves. We use “Saddam” to refer to our father whenever he is not around or when he arrives at home. We call him Saddam because he has this temper that he has difficulty in controlling. When I was little, I used to call my oldest brother this phrase: “laki tenga” (big ears) because he has big ears. I used this phrase whenever I feel like teasing him or when I just want to piss him off.
My mother coined most of the terms in our family; starting off with “Senyorita Pukengkay” (mademoiselle/miss) it may sound funny but she coined this term because my sister keeps on giving orders to us, her younger siblings, when she can do the task herself. She also coined the term “Saddam”.
My sister and I have our own names for each other; I call her “Bru”, short for “bruha”, (witch) because of her fine witch like qualities. She in turn calls me “Ngal”, short for “bungal” because back then when I was about three to seven years old, I barely had my teeth especially the ones in front.
These are the terms and phrases that my family coined and is still using up to now. I cannot imagine that we have made new words that may be added to our vocabulary. I know that there are still so much more but these are the only words that I can remember at the present time.

Pinocchio
The Korean drama series, Pinocchio, is about the stories of a boy and his two families. It starts with a live broadcast of The Quiz Show Challenge between Choi Dal Po, an “All-Zero” student, and Ahn Chan Soo, the school’s brightest student. On Choi Dal Po’s second question he was asked, “According to the 60 year lunar calendar cycle, what year would 2005 be?” a flashback was rekindled in his memory.
A factory caught fire near Ha Myung’s place and the fire rescue arrived. Ha Myung’s, Choi Dal Po’s real name, father, Chief Ki Ho Sang, is the chief of the firemen and they were strategically planning to rescue “two trapped civilians” inside the building.
Unfortunately, the explosion of fire killed nine firemen with one still missing; reporters were flooding the place where the fire happened. One particular reporter, Sung Cha Ok, is the focus of the story.
She was wearing a face mask while broadcasting her report. In her report, she mentioned that the air is still gaseous making it difficult to breathe. When she finished, her camera man asked her why she wore a face mask when they can breathe properly without it and answered, “To make it look more realistic.”
In this part of the story, it is clear and evident that this reporter was not truthful to the public when it is perfectly fine to breathe. She even used the phone call from her husband about their divorce, saying that there was a witness from the fire and was seen near a drug store luring other reporters to this fake statement. She is portrayed as an effective, but untruthful reporter.
After a few days, reporters were in front of the house of Chief Ki Ho Sang asking questions to his sons. Sung Cha Ok was there and asked them if they are happy that their father is still alive and why he abandoned his crew to save himself? Ki Ha Myung started to recite details about his father’s fellow crew members’ lives.
Flashforward, Choi Dal Po and In Ha are applying to become reporters at YGN News and their final test is survival assessment. They are tasked to watch news which they will discuss amongst themselves to further evaluate their skills.
The news that they were to discuss was the fire explosion at a factory that happened 13 years ago, Choi Dal Po’s tragic past. His raging emotions brought him to reveal that In Ha is a Pinocchio causing her to relinquish her application.
MSC Network’s ratings are down because of YGN’s performance over the past months. As a solution to the problem, Sung Cha Ok, MSC reporter, decided to hire In Ha as an intern reporter for their company, since she is a Pinocchio.
In Ha accepted her offer and began for airing under MSC; she revealed her condition and due to this she cannot lie. She made two promises—that she will only relay the truth and she vows to keep her first promise.

Kamatayan

By-liners
The Monday issue, March 23, of Manila Bulletin The Philippines’ Leading Newspaper composes of 50% articles on the front page written by women and 40% are written by men. There are five articles with by liners on the front page out of six articles. The writers are as follows: Hannah L. Torregoza, Ben R. Rosario, Liezle Basa Inigo, Chito A. Chavez, Alexander D. Lopez, Genalyn Kabiling, and Charisa Luci.
As for yesterday’s banner story of this newspaper, “NP, LP start moving on poll”. It is written by both men and women and it discusses that the Nacionalista and Liberal parties have started planning for next year’s presidential election. Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, revealed that he is studying calls for him to run, since he rose from seventh to fifth place in the Pulse Asia presidential survey. Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano self-confessed of his intention to run for president this 2016; he also said that he will not run against Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV who had spoken of his plans to run. However, Trillanes said that he now has plans to run for the position of vice president. The Liberal Party is not to choose its 2016 presidential candidate before the President delivers his State of the Nation Address (SONA) in July.
According to the story entitled, “Separation of conjoined twins successful; will come home soon” twins Jennelyn and Jerrylyn de Guzman’s operation was successful after an eight hour surgery held at Buddhist Tzu Chi General hospital in Hualien, Taiwan last March 13. The twins, when they were still conjoined, were facing each other sharing one stomach and liver. The surgeons who conducted the surgery were careful enough so that the twins will not lose too much blood. PANDA volunteer Fire Brigade of Dagupan Pres. Mario Lim and Johnson Lim have read about the twins’ condition in Manila bulletin who then referred the case to Tzu Chi Foundation, the foundation that helped the twins. The twins together with their mother, Ludy de Guzman, are said to come home by the third week of April.
“Rights watchdog pleads for justice for 7 civilians killed in Mamasapano”, another article in the front page reveals that the public is not aware of the 7 innocent civilians killed last January 25. An ordinary citizen Boyong Unggala was hit by a stray bullet in his forehead while sitting in his balcony where he was staying temporarily.
The way a woman and man writes his stories differs and varies in different ways. Women’s work are more on the soft side as for the example on the conjoined twins, it deals with people helping other people who are in need. For men’s work, they deal with the issues of the government like the recent Mamasapano incident that the public isn’t aware of the seven civilians killed in action. Women deals with social stories while men hard news. Nonetheless, whether the work is written by men or women the important thing is the public values and reads their work.

INTERVIEW WITH A JOURNALIST
1. What factors led you in deciding to be in your profession now?
Our financial status led me to decide on this profession. My mother was a house wife and my father was a chef, he earned enough for our family. My aunt sent me to school because my parents could not afford the tuition. I graduated Cum Laude. When I got married things stated getting better. A new start means a new life.
2. What has been the most difficult part of doing your job?
Preparing the story to be presented is the most difficult for me. Every time I will be assigned to cover a news report, I’m always excited to go to the field and touch base with the people. Socializing isn’t difficult but getting the correct information is. After doing all this, I have to weave my story in a way that it will sound true and correct, that is what I find most difficult.
3. What has been your greatest achievement in serving the people?
Just by writing a news story already makes me proud as a journalist. Having been in this profession, knowing the danger it possesses, is already a very memorable experience for me.
Are you satisfied with the standing in your career?
Today, I don’t find myself satisfied because of so many concerns. Preparing for the day, writing your report, final editing of the story—these are my routine every day.
If given the chance what career would you have taken besides this one?
If I were to choose another profession, I will be a teacher. Imagine teaching every day and instilling in the minds and hearts of your students the values in life, be good role models to students younger than they are, to have a self-esteem, etc.
In your profession, what has been your most loved memory?
Every time I was awarded a loyalty award, this would serve as an achievement for me. Nothing makes me so proud because serving the Filipino people is what I love most.
Have you ever considered changing your career because of the difficulties it imposes?
Fortunately, I have not considered another career because I believe that in life, whatever the circumstances might be, you make your own destiny. I love being in this profession, nothing makes me more proud that being in this field.
If you could give some words of wisdom to the next and future generation, what will you say to them?
It is always said and heard that the next generation is the hope of the future; As Dr. Jose Rizal once said, “Nasa kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan.” Try to finish your studies, learn so much knowledge to serve as your guide in living a good life. Education is your wealth and this is your wealth that cannot be taken away from you, respect your parents and older people. Always remember the fourth commandment, “Honor your father and mother.” Always be proud that you are a Filipino, be proud of our language, use it wherever you are and make God the center of your life. Prepare your life before settling down. Try to explore our wonderful and beautiful world. Travel if you can and if given the opportunity.
Rosana E. de Guzman is the third among seven children. She graduated at the age of 21 and began her work immediately after she graduated. She has received 10th, 20th, 25th, 30th, and 35th service awards. She has also a part time job writing books for different publications in the Philippines like, Diwa, Library Publishing, and other known publications in the country. She has received job offerings at University of Perpetual Help Delta System to teach Filipino to college students. Her name has been rising to fame without her know she is. Before, she has taught in a school in Makati for five years and soon enough became a journalist. For 35 years she has served our country, been awarded loyalty awards and some other things she refused to mention. She took her Masters’ Degree in Philippine Normal University with her thesis paper that is the translation of different stories into Filipino. You see, our writer loves our language so much that her paper is translating stories form different languages into Filipino. For years now, she is already a retired writer because of old age. She is currently 57 years old and has served so much for the country. Not knowing that her name is slowly rising to fame, she has produced books for schools. She has written books for all levels except high school. Many admire her for being a multi-talented person, she is also a catechist at a parish in Las Piñas City, she has been going to Bilibid to visit the prisoners there and been purchasing the products made by those prisoners. She has talked to them and some of them became better persons behind bars. For whatever they have done outside, they have learned to change it inside. Some said that it is better to stay inside jail because they feel safer there than here outside with all the bad people lurking around you. Because of this, she decided to write about the prisoners and make stories about them, while she was there she would interview inmates and compile all the stories she has written and made it into a journal. Unfortunately, this journal was published due to the request of the inmates. She has made 10 copies of this journal and kept it in her home. Today, those prisoners look up to her for believing in them. Their background did not serve as a hindrance for her to know them and they were thankful for that.
Now, she lives in the south with her husband and four children; her youngest daughter is taking up Journalism in University of Santo Tomas now in her second year in college. 2 years from now, her daughter may be another journalist that her family will be proud.

Face2Face.2
Regarding the forum last February 10 at the AB Lecture Hall, a Face to face with the student council and the administration took place around 9am-11am. Students from different majors attended the mini gathering including Journalism, Political Science, Asian Studies, Behavioral Science, and other students who wanted to participate and hear what would happen. In light of this important gathering students have managed to answer questions that were asked for them.
The questions are as follows: Do you think the face to face made any improvements on the issue at hand, missing money? What is the effect of the forum on the students who are concerned? Can you give insights on what happened at the forum?
Ramon Carbonell Jr., a student from 2JRN3, said, “No, because the only information the student council gave was that a hearing is being scheduled. They did not explain why and how possible the money went missing.” “The forum made the students more critical and inquisitive of the student council that administers them.” “Lastly, the student council was asking for sympathy and the approval of the students, but the students were not yet ready to trust them again.”
Angelica Evangelista said, “I think the forum did really make any improvements because no hearing has been conducted yet even though it is also the main concern of the majority inside the AB community, but the administration and the student council are doing their best and I think we should appreciate that.” “A lot more questions about the issue were the effect of the forum. The council pretty much said the same thing over and over again. That they are human, they are also students, but what they were forgetting was the position they have right now is the decision they made for themselves. The students did not force them to run, they decided for themselves. They knew the consequences, duties, and responsibilities even before having the position. So telling the artlets that they also have duties as a student is unreasonable because they knew even before that having the position was something they have to sacrifice.”
Rani Aberin said that, “Yes, there was an improvement that the Speak Up has resulted to since the students know what is happening. I feel that the student council and the administration answered the questions about the issue the students raised, so I think that every student who is concerned more or less has an idea on the issues in which they are concerned. The administration and the student council both presented their side; the only problem is that I wish the venue was different because it was not able to hold the number of students who attended the event.”
Adrianne Diaz said, “The face to face forum made no improvements regarding the case of the missing money. These elected leaders did not answer the adequately the questions accusations thrown at them. I think that the forum was made an avenue to clear out their name for their own benefits.”

Face to Face
Last February 10 at the AB Lecture Hall, a Face to face with the student council and the administration took place around 9am-11am. The place was not enough to hold the classes of Behavioral Science, Journalism, Political Science, Asian Studies and other students who wished to join the forum; nevertheless, the forum happened. It started off with Vice President External Krystyna Nicole Feliciano stating the mechanics. There is only one question per student, no follow-up questions will be entertained, students should be polite and respectful towards the administrators, and no violence and foul words are to be tolerated or else the audience will be sent out of the room.
It started with students asking questions one by one; President Marie Jann Lazo gave a statement that the officers of the AB student council are willing to shed money in replace of the missing 50,000. A student asked if the hearing for the missing money will be open to the public; Assistant Dean Narcisa Tabirara answered that only the members of the panel are allowed to attend the hearing. The student council strongly emphasized that the issue is not delayed; before their term ends they should have resolved the issue. They are willing to accept sanctions if they have violated any rule on the constitution. The Assistant Dean and the Council Adviser’s presence were much appreciated but the Dean’s presence was questioned. His presence was needed there but he is needed in the office to attend other important matters of the college.
“No council is perfect, and we also have to balance our academic standing. With all honesty we are also affected. Our relationship became stronger, this issue is very draining. A bank account has been opened and a vault was provided for the safe keeping of the money. We had a brainstorming of the projects we want to happen for this academic year. Half of our projects are already on-going and are accomplished.”
The platform projects of the council during their run for their position were mentioned and assured the students that their projects are accomplished and are being pushed through. After a series of stands that the council has justified in order to defend their side in this heated argument, the forum was then open to different concerns. A student asked if the AB Type B uniform is to push through, the council answered that the discussions regarding the uniform are still on-going. The designs of the white shirt that will serve as the top of the students for the uniform are still to be approved by the administration.
A curious student from 2JRN3 asked a member of the administrators regarding the standards of the university in hiring professors. He said that some teachers do not teach well and barely attend their classes. The administrator answered that the students always have something to complain about. Verbal complaints will not be accepted; however, complaints in the form of writing will be much appreciated thus action will have to be taken.

Franciscus, Francescus, or Francis
Jorge Mario Bergoglio also known as Franciscus (Latin), Francescus (Italian), or more commonly known as Pope Francis, the people’s pope. He is an Argentinian, born on December 17, 1936, and born to Mario Jose Bergoglio and Regina Maria Sivori. He is the 266th pope of the Catholic Church and he is known all throughout the world for his approachability and humility.
Many of the people do not know that he was a chemical technician in the food section of at the Hickethier-Bachmann Laboratory and a nightclub bouncer before he entered seminary studies. He was bound to be a Catholic priest in 1969 he was ordained as a priest by Archbishop Ramon Jose Castellano and he became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998. His humility has gone to the extent of declining to the luxuries offered to a Pope and choosing to live life simply and humbly. He is fond of dancing and enjoys the traditional music of Argentina and Uruguay known as milonga.
He was admitted at the Immaculada Concepción Seminary, in Villa Devoto, Buenos Aires and entered the Society of Jesus three years after. In 1960, he officially became a Jesuit. When he attended Colegio de San Jose in San Miguel, he graduated with a degree in Philosophy in 1963 and took up the post of a teacher of literature and psychology at the Immaculate Conception College in Santa Fe. Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Bergoglio changed his name to Pope Francis after Saint Francis of Assisi. He had chosen the name because of his concern of the well-being of the poor. It is the first time that a pope has been named Francis.
His inauguration was held on March 19, 2013 in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican. He made tough decisions as well including the abolishing of the bonuses paid to Vatican employees upon the election of a new pope and the annual bonus paid to the cardinals serving on the Board of Supervisors for the Vatican bank, opting instead to donate the money to the poor. This was his first step towards his mission to safeguard the well-being of the poor. On his first Easter homily, he took the chance to appeal for peace and harmony in the world.
He spoke out against frivolous spending by the Church; he invited a boy with Down’s Syndrome for a ride in the Pope mobile; he embraced and kissed Vinicio Riva; he denounced the judgment of homosexuals, he held a major ceremony at the chapel of a youth prison and kissed the feet of 12 young offenders; he urged the protection of the Amazon Rainforest, he personally consoled and called a victim of rape; he snuck out of Vatican to feed the homeless. Reports say that Pope Francis has recently been leaving Vatican so that he could feed the homeless; he even auctioned his motorcycle to benefit the homeless; he also acknowledged that atheists can be good people too; he condemned the global financial system; he fought child abuse.
