Your Worth
I am about to split some hairs and get specific about word use, but I feel that it is important. On social networking I often see attempts to encourage the Christian about his worth. These attempts frequently say something to the effect of: “Christ thought you were worth dying for.” The fact is that this statement is too vague and can easily (and often does) give root to inaccurate beliefs. Romans 7:18 - “And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t.” The truth is that we are debased, rebellious, and unclean beings from the start. And that is what Christ saw when he looked at us. He saw us for what we truly are. We did not deserve nor were we worth the death of Jesus Christ. And this is what makes the Redemption Story so much greater! Instead of seeing a good, lovable, hopeful people and deciding to offer them a way out of an inescapable destiny, Jesus saw an evil, unlovable, hopeless people and decided to give them something they did not deserve. He chose to love us when we could not know love. He chose to save us when we had nothing to give him in return. He chose to show us mercy when we would reject His grace. Christ did not think that we were worth dying on a cross. He saw exactly the opposite. He saw that we were wretched beings and yet He chose to redeem us! He knew how worthless we are, but He gave us an opportunity to live a life of worth! Christ’s atoning blood frees us from bondage and gives us worth in the eyes of the Father. Your worth has nothing to do with you, but it has everything to do with Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17 - “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
