RADIO ROMANCE 🎧 - PARK SUNGHOON

synopsis: you would be lying if you said you didn't feel anything for your best friend sunghoon. he's well-spoken, amazing with kids, knows how to figure skate, and good at literally everything.. well, except maybe realizing that you have feelings for him. maybe that's why he can only sit there and turn red when an anonymous voice shows him affections via the campus radio's confession hotline.

“Happy birthday, Sunghoon!”

Sunghoon’s mouth is in the shape of an ‘O’ when he realizes the meaning of Heeseung’s present to him. “Oh, wow,” he says in shock. He quickly recovers by firing another comment with a flirtatious lilt in his voice, “All for me?”

You straight up punch the birthday boy in the shoulder.

You see, in an attempt to help you two continue your path of reconciliation, Heeseung had asked you to help deliver his gift to Sunghoon. (Bless people with well paying internships at illustrious companies.. Or as you like to put it: the kind hearted rich.)

Heeseung’s present is a jute gift basket filled with an assortment of expensive looking items. A pair of wireless noise cancelling headphones (is this what it's like being an adult?), a few—FEW?—20000 to 50000 won gift cards to Sunghoon’s favorite places, a pack of socks, and best of all: you as the delivery boy. In your opinion, the best part of the gift would have to be the socks. You can never have too many, given that a drying machine will somehow always eat every pair you own.

“Don’t say it like that, ugh, you make it sound corny and cheap.”

“God damn, what was that for?” He rubs the point of infliction. With one sassy finger in the air, Sunghoon continues what seems to be the start of a monologue, “For your information, I value your time and effort. You are not a ‘corny and cheap' present. Thank you, YN, for taking time out of your precious day to deliver Heeseung’s present to me.”

“Sunghoon. You know me, I just have to be your knight in shining armor,” you say as you gesture to the spot he’s rubbing. “I’m referring to the punch by the way. Not the gift. I have another speech for that.”

Sunghoon chuckles. He rifles through the gift basket once more, before shifting his attention to you. He smiles. “I appreciate it. Genuinely. You, the gift, everything.”

You shake your head, “Don’t mention it. Unless you wanna pay me for my subway fare.”

You can tell he took your words seriously with the way he immediately goes to reach for his wallet (? you assume) in his back pocket. You reach out to halt his actions, leaving him in an awkward pose. He’s still mid grab.

“It was a joke. A joke, Park Sunghoon, a JO-KE. Besides, you would owe me a lot more than a new T-money card if I was going to start charging you for minor things.”

“But–”

“No buts. It’s okay. I’m your best friend, that’s all you have to pay me for.”

The boy in front of you tilts his head, “I don’t think that’s how it goes?” Sunghoon responds incredulously. “Are you saying I should pay you for being my friend?”

You nod. “It’s a bit delayed, I’d say.. But it’s better now than never!” (Sunghoon’s face then contorts into a look of disgust. His brows are furrowed, his eyes are squinted, his mouth is slightly agape as if he’s cringing, but also not.. He just looks dumb.)

You break out into a fit of laughter at that, unable to continue the charade. “Ah, happy birthday, Sunghoon. Can I come in now? I’ll present you with your actual gift if I'm allowed in.”

It just now registers in his head that you’ve been standing in his door frame instead of in the comfort of his apartment.

“Oh, shit, I’m sorry. I’ve been all over the place for real. Yeah, yeah, come on in, Miss Vampire,” Sunghoon teases with a curtsy. He gestures for you to sit down at the table as he kicks your house slippers towards the seat.

You nearly knock him out of the way as you step into his quaint apartment. It’s a 140 square meter studio with almost everything he needs. Every time you visit, you can’t forget to admire the decorations that litter his walls. Medallions from his Senior skater years, photos of you, photos with the guys, Yeji, his parents, the Parks with Gaeul and without.. The walls are filled with memories that scream Sunghoon.

“Yes, yes, I’m glad you remembered to formally let me come in. Anyways, here’s your gift!” You finally show him your presents. Walking him through the gift, you start to explain each detail. With a big breath, you begin. “Bear with me, okay? Essentially.. This rectangle thing is actually a picture frame! I collaged a bunch of my favorite memories with you into one and got it framed. I even had Sunoo help me decorate. He told me that he ‘had to decorate his picture like it was a rare Poca,’ which is why there are so many stickers surrounding the selfie we took with him."

He nods, studying the picture frame. His fingers brush against the glass, lingering on the photos where it's just the two of you. You mentally capture this and store it in your heart.

The next gift.. “Oh, oh, open that next! I think you’ll love this.”

He picks up the square box you were pointing to. With a serious gaze, Sunghoon waits until you make eye contact to speak. “I’m always going to love anything you give me, YN, you know that. As long as it's from you. Because you're the girl that I love.. To admire! Thanks for being here for me."

You nearly drop dead at the delivery of his words. Hearing those words from him tugs at your heart strings, but you refuse to give in. Not when you know that it doesn’t hold the same meaning to him as it does to you. Plus, years of friendship has told you that an 'I Love You' coming from the boy will never be more than platonic. “Alright, I trust you,” you say with a quiver in your voice. “But quickly! Open it up, I’m excited to see your reaction.”

There’s a delicate ribbon on the box that he daintily unwraps. You suck in a breath as he takes the top off, revealing a silver bracelet. It’s simple, but in your opinion, it's perfectly Sunghoon. It has a thick bar as the centerpiece, where you had the date you two met engraved on it along with your initials. It certainly doesn’t scream “platonic birthday present!!” but your intentions were for him to catch on anyways.

“It’s not much compared to what the guys probably got you, sorry. I was struggling to budget your present along with my living expenses,” you reveal anxiously. “Hope you like it anyways, Hoon.”

“Holy shit,” Sunghoon gasps. He looks between you and the box. “Of course I li–love it, YN, this is crazy. What the hell? Thank you so much.” He sets the box down on his coffee table and extends his arms out to hug you.

You graciously waddle to him, and enter the warmth of a bearlike hug. This, you decide, is what home feels like. Sunghoon. Over a decade of friendship feels like home and comfort. There’s a comment about the cost of the gift that lingers on your tongue, but you settle for keeping the comfortable silence instead. Besides, it was his mother who taught you that talking about the cost of a gift was incorrect anyways.

Once you detach, you decide to reveal the most sentimental part of the present. A wrapped picture frame. “Finally, this last gift is definitely the best by far. I just had to immortalize my favorite photo of you and Gaeul!”

He tears the paper off the frame with quick fingers. You watch with evil delight as Sunghoon’s smile falls. He turns to you dramatically. “You did fucking not.”

You grin evilly, knowing damn well what you did wrong. “What did I do wrong, hm?”
