The Call Within: A Nurse's Awakening
(Carmela V. Villarey)
It was midnight. Terror choked me as my mother gasped for air, suffering a heart attack. The frantic race to Viga Hospital blurred into a chaotic scene of beeping machines and worried faces. Clutching her hand, I whispered, "Lord, please, wag muna please," a desperate plea born of raw fear. Yet, amidst the chaos, one image remains clear: a nurse, her eyes reflecting unwavering focus and deep concern. That night, I didn't just witness medical expertise; I found my calling.
My mother's crisis wasn't just personal; it revealed the critical role nurses play. The World Health Organization highlights a global shortage of nurses, with some regions facing a deficit of 4.5 million. This underscores the urgency of our commitment. Nurses don't just treat illnesses; they tend to the whole person. The gentle touch, reassuring words, and swift actions—these weren't just procedures; they were expressions of profound care. This holistic approach, central to nursing theory, is what truly heals.
The truth is, the call to nursing isn't always loud, but it is always profound. It whispers in moments of empathy, it resonates in the desire to alleviate suffering, it echoes in the quiet strength you feel when caring for another. It demands more than just a uniform; it demands your heart, your intellect, your unwavering commitment. It asks you to see beyond the tasks and truly connect with the human being before you. It's a calling that asks us to look inward, beyond external pressures, and recognize the deep-seated desire to make a meaningful difference. So, I ask you, personally and sincerely: do you feel that echo within you? Will you answer that call and embrace the extraordinary journey of a nurse?
