Safety Tips for Working at Height
Did you know that one of the most common causes of significant work-related injuries and fatalities is falls from heights? Employers must ensure that they take all essential precautions to reduce the danger of their employees falling from a height, from proactive hazard awareness to ongoing site inspection.
Make sure you're following all of your employer's rules.
Do’s And Don’ts in Working at Height
Do’s
When working near a delicate surface, use caution.
DO make sure you're safe from falling things.
Prepare for evacuations and rescues in the event of an emergency.
While you're on the ground, get as much work done as you can.
Ascertain that employees can securely access and exit the location where they will be operating at height.
Make sure the equipment you're utilizing for the project is robust, stable, and capable of completing the task. Regularly inspect and maintain them.
Don’ts
DON’T allow incompetent workers do any work at height.
DON’T lean or place the ladder on or fragile upper surfaces.
DON’T stay quiet when you feel someone is compromising their own safety or the safety of others
DON’T overload the ladders that they are working on, with equipment or materials.
DON’T try to reach too far when you’re on a ladder.
DON’T use ladders to do work that entails heavy or strenuous tasks. Only use them to do work that’s quick and light.
Managing the Risk at Workplace
Prior to working at height, competent personnel must prepare an ERP for every other work at height that is decided by a risk assessment. The Regulation and the Code stipulate the need for emergency and rescue procedures. Consideration should be given to:
Communications
Rescue and resuscitation equipment
Capabilities of rescuers
First aid
Local emergency services.
Use the Proper Equipment for Working at Heights
You’ve got the equipment you need to ensure a protected work environment, you need to ensure you’re choosing the proper equipment.
However, PPE, on the other hand, should be inspected by the user before each usage. It's critical that everybody who might be utilising the devices knows what they're looking for, what's appropriate and what to do if something goes wrong. A pre-use inspection doesn't have to take long, but it should be thorough. It's possible that one action will mean the difference between life and death.
Conclusion
Without the workers' assistance, the height safety message is constantly at risk of being disregarded, misconstrued, or overlooked. As a result, all efforts must encourage and engage personnel.
The regulations are in existence to protect workers from such height safety concerns, but they are frequently disregarded, misconstrued, not followed, not enforced, or, perhaps most dangerous of all, complacency. If you have all of your workers selling the same height safety messages you best enable your business to eradicate the biggest working at heights.
So if employees understand why and what they need to do and comply with employers’ directions, we can then focus on removing complacency as it is replaced with a new normal.

WHY ENSURE SAFE CONSULTANCY?
Injury risk is reduced by following good workplace health, safety, wellbeing, and hygiene practices. We are the originators of the first guide on occupational health and safety, whether you work at height every day, working safely should always remain a top priority.
It takes one mistake to turn a routine task into a serious injury or fatality. Every time your employees may be exposed to a fall hazard, you must be prepared to protect them.
Training and Guidance
Assist the Faculty and Heads of Professional Support Services and the Roof Permits to Work Issues in the selection of suitable equipment
Assist in the creation and execution of audits relating to working at heights and related equipment. To ensure the safe use of any work at height equipment, develop and implement training for Roof Permit to Work Issuers, Employees, and Users. Be in charge of keeping this policy and process up to date.
Assist in the undertaking of Roof Audits
A proper work at height risk assessment should be carried out in order to set workable work at height management measures. This will aid in the development of appropriate control mechanisms for work at height activities. As a result, it’s critical that the employer analyses the risks and assesses the dangers so that work may be done safely.
Risk Assessment Guidance
In the event that works at height cannot be avoided, a suitable and sufficient risk assessment MUST be undertaken. The results of this risk assessment must be used to build a safe work system, which includes the implementation of emergency procedures. The assessment and method statement (safe system of work) must be put down if the risks are severe.
Assessing the Risks
All available information on the task to be done must be available and consulted for assessing risk.
All foreseeable risks must be assessed ahead of time, and the following factors may need to be taken into account.
• Working from a ladder
• Working from a scaffold or scaffold tower
• Working on rooftops without proper fixed protection
•Working on roofs with unprotected roof lights
Rescue Plan
A rescue must be included in every method statement that discusses how an injured worker can be safely removed. When a safety harness is utilized as a control measure, the quickness of response is critical.

Always face towards the ladder while climbing up or down
Only move up or down the ladder one rung at a time
Always keep three point contact
Keep your body centered within the ladder stiles
Climb down from the ladder if you need to reposition it.
At workplace workers normally use scaffolding for work at height. scaffold is temporary work plateforms which is used to perform certain task with ease and safety. The first thing in using scaffold is Scaffold Erection. Only competent scaffolders should erect the scaffold. After completion competent Scaffolding inspector or supervisor inspect the scaffold and when the approve then workers are allowed to use it.
Scaffolding
if a person is going to work above 6 feet or 1.8 meter should protect himself by means of guardrail systems or personal fall arrest systems.
Guardrail system
Guardrail system shall be able to withstand a force of at least 90kg. (200 lbs.) It consists
1.Toprails - top edge height of toprails shall not be less than 0.95 m. (38 “) and not more than 1.15 m. (45”) above the walking/working surface of a platform
2.Midrails – installed approximately halfway between the walking/working surface and toprail
3.Toeboards – shall have no more than 6 mm. (1/4”) gap above the working surface and should withstand a force of at least 23 kg (50 lbs).
4.Uprights – shall not be spaced more than 2.7 m. (9 ft.) apart
scaffolding ladder should have 75 degree angle with ground or 4:1 ( 4 meter vertical then 1 meter horizontal) and 0.9 meter or 3 rungs should be above the platform
Elevating work platforms
Barricade under and around the elevating work platform
Keep all tools in bag or bucket
enter and exit only through gate
keep basket gate closed and locked while working
wear full body harness ( in picture no harness) and anchor inside the basket
Safety Harness
Stops the falls and spreads the impact shock over a large area of the body and allows a fall to be stopped or arressted without causing body injury the maximum free fall distance is 1.8 metre the safety harness must be attached to a lanyard (length 2 meter) with a built in shock absorber or self-retracting lanyard the anchorage point must be strong to support the body weight before use must check the harnsess for any signs of wear or damage. The lanyard is firmly attached to harness make sure anchor point is positioned above where you are working never use damaged equipment.

PRACTICES AND TOOLS TO MINIMIZE RISK INVOLVED WHILE WORKING AT HEIGHT
Work at Height - What it means?
Work at height means working in a place where a person could be injured if they fell from one level to another. This can be above or below ground level.
HOW TO MINIMIZE HAZARD WHILE WORKING AT HEIGHT
A hazard assessment shall be carried out for all work at height. It is essential that the hazards are identified before the work starts and that the necessary equipment, appropriate precautions, and systems of work are provided and implemented.
Preventing falls from height is a priority for the work scenario as it expects that work at height is actively managed so that people are not harmed. The best method of hazard control is eliminating the potential of a fall. Appropriate fall prevention controls shall be put in place, regardless of the time duration of the task. Meanwhile, Consideration of elimination controls should occur early in the project development stage to allow necessary design, planning, and coordination. Established controls, starting with the most effective – elimination, and then working through isolation and minimization can proceed. if there is a potential for a person at work to fall from any height, reasonable assistance for selecting the best equipment for keeping people safe at height.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Here we can discuss the range of controls to isolate or minimize the potential for harm resulting from a fall.
1) GROUP CONTROL APPROACH
The preferred approach is to apply group controls that isolate multiple workers from the risk of falling.
a) Scaffolding
The scaffold is used as a means of protecting people working on a roof, it is preferred that the scaffold is set up in a manner that prevents a fall from occurring, regardless of the distance of the fall. Scaffolds are a common way to provide a safe work platform. There are a wide variety of scaffolding systems available.
b) Safety mesh
Safety mesh is the preferred system for protecting construction workers against falling through a roof while they are laying roof sheets. If securely fixed, it also provides fall prevention for maintenance and repair workers.
2) HARNESS SYSTEM
A harness system enables a person to be positioned and safely supported at a work location for the duration of the task being undertaken at height. Harness systems are used for gaining access to, and working at, a workforce where there is a risk of a fall.
3)KNUCKLE BOOM
A knuckle boom has a second articulated joint partway along the arm to allow for extra flexibility and reach for the work platform. The arm can be folded away when not in use, and to vary the reach in use.
4)GUARDRAILS
A guardrail is a barrier that is capable of physically preventing workers from falling. Guardrails are a group control that can be installed to protect workers from building edges, roof edges, building openings, lift shafts and other similar ducts with a wall or floor openings.
5) MOBILE ELEVATING WORK PLATFORMS (MEWPS)
Common forms of MEWPs include cherry pickers, scissor lifts, hoists, and travel towers.
