With a large collection of pictures of the various routes to the pilgrimage destination of Santiago de Compostela in far Northwest Spain, I have decided to post selected ones. Unlike the usual trip diary, these are photos illustrating various aspects of the ways, including signs, sculptures, architecture, and landscapes. Unless otherwise noted, all photographs are mine, and I retain copyright to them.

The peculiar town selected by all too many Anglophones to begin the pilgrimage. The climb over the Pyrenees makes for the single most difficult day on the route, and it discourages many who think the Camino francés which begins at Roncesvalles will be similarly difficult all the way to Santiago. The hills which come later are ever so much easier to mount for after a few days walking the body no longer rebels at altitude gain. It is far more reasonable to 1) add a few days and walk in the flatter country of France before attempting the climb or 2) begin as most Spaniards do at Roncesvalles.

Ruinas de Monasterio de San Antón, Burgos, 2001.
It was just a ruin in 2001. The "Templars" who converted part of it to an albergue had not yet arrived.
