Field Guide: The Okanagan Desert and Osoyoos - the only desert in Canada
Major Gyms
Osoyoos Ground-Type Gym - The only gym found in this semi-arid region, the Osoyoos Gym belongs to the Osoyoos Indian Band, a First Nations group that have lived in this region for centuries. This gym relies on a local Pokemon, the burrowing Rowlet, which have adapted ground-typing at the expense of their flying-type.
Where can I battle?
The gym is probably your best bet, but there’s plenty of trainers here, especially during tourist season. Check out Osoyoos Lake on the American border, and you’re likely to encounter trainers swimming, fishing, or kayaking who are ready to challenge you to a battle. Seniors form a large part of the town’s population, and many of them have had decades of experience, so come prepared or risk losing!
History
Inhabited by First Nations people for thousands of years, this unique shrubland ecosystem was first encountered by Europeans seeking furs, and later, gold. The nearby city of Osoyoos was settled by miners, and grew with the arrival of a railroad in the region. Today, the fascination of visiting the only desert in all of Canada attracts visitors to the region.

Field Guide: Northern California
Major Gyms
Northern California is home to a ton of gyms, but here are some of the most significant!
San Francisco Fairy-Type Gym (California League, American League) - Located on an artificial island in San Francisco Bay, this nondescript gym is one of the toughest in the nation. With a famously difficult puzzle and infamously tough fairy-type Pokemon, this gym is sure to be a challenge!
San Francisco Ground-Type Gym - The oldest gym in San Francisco, this gym honors the city’s mining heritage by using an assortment of native Californian rock and ground-types. It’s a good gym for beginners to hone their skills.
San Jose Electric-Type Gym (California League) - This gym is widely considered one of the most modern and technologically advanced in the country, and utilizes a large population of Rotom to make for a thrilling gym experience.
Sacramento Bug-Type Gym (California League) - Located in Land Park, this bug-type gym is laid-back, without a formal gym building - all battles are outside. However, this makes it easy for new challengers to go up against, making it a popular choice for those starting their Pokemon journey.
Oakland Grass-Type Gym - This small gym is one of the oldest in northern California, established in the 19th century. Its gym leader uses a Shiftry famous for its leaf storms and its ability to deal enormous damage, even to fire-types.
Contest Halls
San Francisco Bay Contest Hall - As the only official contest hall in the Bay Area, this is one of the most frequented contest halls in the country. It’s themed after the elegant Primarina, and this Pokemon can often be seen lounging outside the building, soaking up the sun.
Sacramento Contest Hall - The center of California’s contest circuit, this building is popular among beginners to contests. It’s themed after Ursaring, who features on California’s flag.
Where can I battle?
Parks are the place to find northern California’s battles - whether urban parks or national parks, there’s sure to be plenty of trainers looking for a challenge! One popular place for both trainers and wild Pokemon is in the area’s redwood forests, iconic of the region.

First extensively settled during the California Gold Rush, this region quickly rose to become one of the most important Pokemon centers in the entire United States. Wellington Flying-Type Gym (New Zealand League) - “Wellington is the windiest city in the world, by average wind speed, and has areas of native bush designed to allow native birds to travel through the city. Located right next to the Zephyrometer, making it on the Meridian Wind Sculpture Walk, just downhill of the Town Belt, an area of native bush where you can see native birdlife, and by the harbour famous for Ngake and Whātaitai the namesakes of the gym's two Gyarados."
Wellington Normal-Type Gym - One of the easiest gyms in New Zealand, this gym is designed to be an introductory gym for new Kiwi trainers. It specializes in Doduo and Dodrio, and doubles as a sanctuary for this endangered Pokemon family.
Contest Halls
