When you hear the red and blue sirens and see the cop in his/her uniform you should feel safe, but if you were to take a pull now, I can guarantee the results wouldn’t be parallel with that statement. Officers are required to go through a 6 month Police Academy before getting promoted for a hiring position. I believe in that academy, we should enforce a change in their policies. Officers are trained more tactical and technical skills for the job, but they forget the ethics. The part of them that makes them human. Training that develops understanding of racism, cultural appropriation, mental illness; the list goes on. Recently, today a matter of fact a case of a Detroit officer posting an absurd caption onto his Snapchat account stating, “Another night to Rangel (sic) up these zoo animals,” as he gets ready for his shift. This reveals to us the officers sees victims and criminals as animals first before as human beings. This mindset prevents the relationship of the community and officers from growing and becoming one. Now, not only are we scared of criminals, but also our protectors. There are programs out there such as The Center for Policing Equity who will train officers for free if they share data, but even with this opportunity out there police counties won’t pursuit. this is where we step in and use our voices and power of voting to make a change. It is sad that we need to train officers how to be ethical, but it’s necessary. A police officer is a respectable career and position, so it should be deserved. In situations like these, people forget that the good majority of officers out there that are amazing, so please don’t forget that. We need a change and it won’t be fast and easy, but this a a step to a bigger possibility.
The Kairos of my topic, The need of proper training in out police force, is now, today, everywhere and anywhere. This topic is a huge case this generation is dealing with. There are stories everyday about police brutality and violence against innocent people where citizens don’t feel a sense of security any longer. It’s always on the news and every political speech today. In news articles, they mainly use Pathos as a way to draw people into clicking onto their article. With a very tempting title that burns their soul of anger and if they don’t click it then they leave feeling like a bad human being. In political speech, politicians bring this touchy topic, because it’s a major change as where if you make it sound like you can fix it, most people will vote for you. This articulates into Logos, as it’s only logical to vote for this politician as the issue you see everyday in news articles will make it disappear. The work of pathos, ethos, and logos make it the most ethical, credible, and logical decision.

Now that I think about it, I basically eat fast food two to three times a day here at college. My daily meal consist of a burrito bowl for an early lunch and burger with fries for dinner. Due to me reading this article, “Reasons Fast Foods Are Bad for You,” written by Annette McDermott published on LoveToKnow; I went to go buy myself a $13 bowl of fruit from the Pavilion. McDermott used diction to make us truly believe we are dying from eating this type of food, which we are. The article is written in truly simple words tat anyone can follow along. It’s not a scientific journal with terms no one understand, but common words that rings a bell. Such as when McDermott described indigestion. She stated, “Those who eat a poor diet are more likely to experience stomach upset...” (e.g., “8.”) Paragraph: These are common terms that anyone can follow and understand. Making it a very effective article for the general public, her audience. Next to her text is this photo of a man holding a burger and grabbing his stomach with a sense of pain. This reinforces her statements of fast food being, “..not a good idea.” (e.g., “1.”) , and “... effects on your health can be disastrous.” (e.g., “2.”) Her diction and supporting image makes the readers relate and understand her points on fast food. Due to her, I’m now eating an overpriced bowl of fruits, thank you, Annette McDermott.

If I asked a close friend to describe me as a person, he/she would say I’m reserve, compassionate, and thoughtful. Reserve like a researcher? Compassionate and thoughtful as a doctor? Attending University of California Merced majoring in Biological Sciences with an emphasis on evolution; I’m not quite sure where I’m going to take that degree towards. Currently still discovering new things everyday and living life to the fullest in hopes of finding my passion. Signing up for multiple clubs such as PAA, Archery, and even trying out some dance workshops in my first two weeks of college. Oh, and did I say I got accepted into the Yosemite Leadership program in UC Merced! If you’re still interested in me or my adventures stay tune for more. See you soon.
