Agents of Change: Week 4
Week 4:
Week 4 we presented our environmental presentation to the class, which I was really nervous about. Since majority of my degree has been online I’m not used to presenting in person and in front of a big class so this was definitely outside my comfort zone.
In the end it wasn’t that scary and I was really proud of our group and to see all our hard worked paid off!

Agents of Change: Week 2
Week 2:
This week we were in our groups for our upcoming assignment! I am in the environmental group alongside Joe, Elise, Maxine and Jeremy. We spent the class researching and figuring out which area we would all be specialising in, Joe brought in some books and just the class discussing environmental issues.
In the end I decided I decided to look into the issue of pollution, as I see at my work the amount of waste that gets thrown out and its an area I’m passionate about researching!

Agents of Change: Week 1
Week one and I was just so excited to going to class in person. I wasn’t sure what this class entailed all I knew that it involved activism which is an area I am very passionate about. When we were asked about why we joined this class my reasoning was because I want to be able to design in order to make change and the world a better place, and communicate to spread awareness for the greater good.
Once we were introduced to Miriam and Hannah It was cool to hear about their background in fashion and how we could involve fashion within our finals. I really enjoy expressing myself through fashion so I really want to try step out my comfort zone with this class and try create a garment.
Overall the first week was jam packed with information about the studio and wrapping our ahead around what the semester entails but I’m really excited about the following weeks to come and start exploring our final designs.

Since starting this studio, it has opened my eyes to looking at all sorts of activism in our day to day lives. These examples showcase a backyard in which someone is promoting something they are passionate about, which i really admired.

Final Post, Finishing off the semester
Throughout this first semester in communication design I have learnt more in these 13 weeks about design than my whole high school experience, and have finished the semester being more passionate about graphic design than ever. Although this semester has definitely had its challenges, especially since majority of the semester has been online learning and from being super overwhelmed, I have really enjoyed not only learning new skills and knowledge about design but also enjoyed the creative freedom of it all. Last year I had a gap year after graduating in 2018 and was focusing on work and travel, but when i started uni early this year i found myself lacking confidence in my design abilities as i was comparing myself to my fellow classmates. But then I became inspired by everyones unique abilities and skills once i realised everyone is different and is going to be at different levels and I had to just focus on myself growing as a designer by working hard and learning from my teachers and classmates. By keeping up with these blog posts over the past few months has really helped me by looking at how i have been tracking and looking at my progress and growth which has been really cool to see. The blog posts was also a great way to look at everyones work and see the cool stuff people wrote and reblogged, which assisted in inspiring me more within my own tumblr posts. Overall I have really loved communication design and have learnt so many great things from not only the lectures but also my tutor Bailey, who has assisted in showing in her classes adobe tutorials for illustrator, photoshop and indesign which was an area i was really struggling in. But to wrap it all up i’m so happy with how my first semester at uni has went even though it was online I have grown so much from that girl lacking confidence at the start of the year to now a girl who is inspired and determined to keep on learning and improving in communication design.

Stop Sexual Assault
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above are my prototype campaign posters for my Image and Identity assignment but thought it was fitting to post on my tumblr blog because these posters communicate a serious on going issue and thought it was important to share. The assessment was to research a potent topic issue and i chose sexual assault as it’s something i’m passionate about ending and an issue that has impacted many people close to me. I created a series of simplistic illustrations of female bodies to represent the vulnerability but still maintaining power over ones self by eliminating the faces.  I also used a range of red tones to represent the blood and bruises of victims experiences, as red is seen as an emotionally intense colour and represents the feeling of danger, strength and power it only seemed fitting for the campaign posters. I also finished off the designs by adding a mixture of quotes and sentences alongside the illustrations to create a deeper effect on the intended audience.

Final For “Ask me Anything” Assignment
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above demonstrates my final design for the “Ask me anything” assessment which is due today. Overall i’m really pleased with how it turned out and after many hours of being frustrated drawing and figuring layouts I can say i’m proud of what i have done during this time in isolation and not being able to attend face to face classes. I think i’m most pleased with the fact that i hand drew everything myself after researching comic books and figuring out character styles and making it work with my own style, and although it’s not perfect and i still have a lot of to improve on i’m content with what i have submitted. From this assignment i think i have come away with gaining a lot more skills and illustrator abilities that i want to carry on learning in order to improve my adobe expertise. The area i found most challenging was fitting a certain amount of information into my comic book illustrations, and personally i have a habit of writing big paragraphs so for this task i had to make sure i focused on only addressing key information. Overall this had to be one of my favourite tasks out of the whole coarse as it allowed me to creatively challenge myself and step out my comfort zone which was a great experience.

Looking a Joe’s design idea for the ‘Ask me anything’ assessment i find really interesting! i love the way he has used cut outs of furniture to create a collage that resembles a living room layout. I think the approach of scanning the magazine cut outs then putting them together on photoshop a really cool concept that has worked out well and a way i would never of thought of. The overall design layout has a great sense of balance and the tones and colours work really well and compliment the design.

PROJECT 4 UPDATE:
Today I scanned the magazine cut out’s so that i could use them in my digital zine. I made sure to scan each furniture time separately because that gives me the option to photoshop a scene together if I decide I don’t like the scene I’ve put together in the first photo. My plan from here is to add these magazine scarps into my zine and add some graphics on top of them!

Not only is this an amazing design by Shai but it’s very fitting to everything going on in the world right now. Her poster designs speak for themselves and I agree with everything she has written in this post. Enough is enough.

Image & Identity Project: Racism
Because of the current events that is happening in the world right now, I would like to share my work in Image & Identity as I chose my topic issue to be Racism in Australia. I know that this is not only happening in Australia but for project-purposes, it was best to be specific with my audience.
We were to do a profile of our chosen issue and create a design artefact of some sort for it, and I did a series of posters advertising a campaign called #StopRacism to increase awareness that it’s still happening which is affecting TOO many lives.

#BlackLivesMatter. Enough is enough. Let’s all help and change the world. Educate yourselves, educate someone. The internet is filled with resources, donate, sign a petition. We can make a change, little or big, one at a time.

I really love Ricki’s final for the “ask me anything” assessment, as i also have a comic theme to my assignment its really interesting to see the difference between the the two and compare different approaches. Ricki’s is all black and white and has gone for a classic comic book strip aesthetic, where mine is bright and colourful and takes on more of a pop art vibe. My favourite part of this design is the font she has picked for her titles, as i think it suites the design really well and compliments the imagery and text within the layout.

I really love Liberty’s update on her zine design. The overall concept and aesthetic i really like and think its super unique as i’ve never seen anything like this before. This design has a great sense of balance and i love the strong contrast between the red and the blue. The ripped out paper adds a nice organic touch and helps add to the balance of the design. Overall i love this design and has to be one of my favourite zines i’ve seen so far.
ASSESSMENT 3 UPDATE
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
just a quick update: Here are some of the very first workings of the Zine. I decided to interview one of hockey’s painting as a sort of challenge (as if I needed any more challenges lol). I used and appropriated Hockney’s work to better communicate my ideas and relate to his work and the pop art movement. I intend for this zine to feel like an intimate diary of the figure, as if you’re talking to someones memory instead of them as a person.

Communication without the use of text
Tumblr media
In the image seen above is my final instructional poster for my Colour and information class project. The reason why i’m posting this on my tumblr is because although i didn’t work on this in my communication design class I believe it links back to the start of the semester where we learned about communication without the use of words. Above displays a step by step guide on how to make the perfect coffee without the use of any words or numbers. This can connect back to Andy’s first lecture where he spoke about symbols and signs that are universally well known as a way to make contact with others, which can be compared to this assignment as i have made a simplistic, easy instructional poster for any beginner to understand just through visual imagery.
This demonstrates the knowledge i have learned over the semester from my communication design lectures and classes and has allowed me to use this new knowledge and apply it to not only my other classes but in day to day life.
