Arthur Puppington 🧊 Emotional Absence as a Way of Life

Arthur didn’t raise Clay. He tolerated him.

He was cold, withholding, and emotionally vacant.

The kind of father who believed being present meant being silent and judgmental in the same breath.

He didn’t hit Clay to “show love.” He didn’t show anything. He was just… gone, even when he was in the room.

Arthur taught Clay that love was measured in approval withheld, and that being seen required being broken.

Clay Puppington 🧨 Self-Hatred as Fatherhood

Clay didn’t become Arthur. He became something worse.

He didn’t just copy the abuse, he added fuel to it.

Where Arthur was emotionally cold, Clay is violently reactive.

Where Arthur was dismissive, Clay is punishing.

Clay doesn’t hit Orel because he thinks it’s love.

He hits Orel because he can’t stand to be seen, and Orel sees him too clearly.

In Orel’s innocence, Clay sees the boy he used to be, the one who hoped for something better.

And he hates him for it.

It’s not a cycle. It’s an escalation.

Arthur passed down pain through silence.

Clay passed down pain through rage.

And what makes Clay tragic isn’t that he was doomed..it’s that he had moments of clarity. He could have chosen differently.

But instead of healing, he chose to punish.

Instead of breaking the cycle, he made it louder.

Final Thought:

Arthur killed Clay softly, over time.

Clay kills everyone else all at once, and calls it parenting.

He isn’t a broken man doing his best.

He’s a cruel man avoiding his best because facing himself would hurt more than hurting his son.

I was thinking about Clay and Raymond's relationship some more. I’m sorry if this is way too long

After moving to Moralton, Clay barely knows anyone and, with his stunted social skills, may feel a little isolated. For a while Raymond may be the only man he'd see often enough to form a friendship

In the early years of the marriage I think Clay would be scapegoated, redirecting Mrs Hymentact's ire away from Raymond, since I doubt they'd forgive him for getting arrested during the wedding. Even though Raymond wouldn't have the nerve to disagree with Mrs Hymentact directly, Clay, while drunk, might. Raymond could maybe sympathize with Clay’s position as scapegoat while maybe getting some catharsis through Clay’s behaviour

Raymond migh've been slightly more outspoken before his marriage- on the level of sober young adult Clay- but became more withdrawn over time. Raymond might see glimpses of his former self in Clay

If it was at a point where Mrs Hymentact was pressuring Clay and Bloberta to have kids, and both were drunk enough, Raymond might accidentally admit he felt coerced into conceiving Lunchbox. Clay could internalise this as how all men feel about hetero sex

I haven't fully thought of their dynamic because Raymond is fully withdrawn into himself even while inebriated and out of earshot from Mrs Hymentact, whereas Clay is a lot more expressive than Raymond, so maybe they could commiserate, with Clay making more of an effort to be with and talk to Raymond

I'm open to Clay's crush being unrequited, or Raymond being interested but not willing to pursue anything with Clay. I’d imagine if Clay ever propositioned Raymond ,or if they ever actually did anything, it'd be a one-time thing because Raymond would be wracked with guilt for hurting Bloberta. He'd try to limit contact with Clay and not speak to him unless necessary

This is absolutely crazy and I love it, I do agree that if they did anything it would only be a one time thing. The guilt would definitely eat him alive! I like your ideas!
