Katie was peering around a corner, smiling happily. There was adventure in her eyes as she looked around for the rather large toad that she had accidentally let loose in the school. She had been following it for nearly half an hour, always an inch away from catching it before it would leap off. At first, it was rather bothersome, but Katie started to like the game of cat and mouse. The Hufflepuff felt as if she were back in her younger years, playing hide-n-seek with a group of kids. Katie was always a great seeker, but she felt as though she were even better at hiding. Her small body could worm it’s way into the tightest of places. She once even fell asleep between a bookcase and a wall for three hours before she was found.
The pink-haired girl giggled softly as the toad hopped into the center of the hallway. Slowly, she tiptoed her way over, stopping every few seconds to make sure it didn’t see her. “Gotcha!” She sprung forward, face-planting into the ground. Her fingers grabbed at the toad uselessly, a mere inch away. The toad croaked and hopped off. Katie giggled and laid on the ground for a moment, watching the toad hop down the hall, until someone came up behind her. The girl pushed her small body off of the floor and wiped the dirt and blood from the scrape on her chin. “Hello! Would you like to help me catch a toad?”
Ernie had a book in his hand, still looking at American culture for a possible trip that he wanted to plan with Hannah. Her father was in America, and Ernie was doing of his own research and tracking but keeping it from her until the time was right. He didn’t know exactly how he would approach the situation but he knew that it would be one she wouldn’t mind.
He didn’t even see Katie until she had spoken, not realizing exactly what she was doing until she talked about it. He had no interest in catching a toad and he was going to politely decline but he didn’t mind keeping her company. “Not really my forte but I’ll give you some great tips. Magic might help you more.”

Taylor didn’t know much about Ernie, but according to what he’d just said, it would probably be a long time until she did. The girl didn’t mind though, she could be patient. She knew the guy had gone through a lot during the war, and she couldn’t really blame him for being that way. She might be open with everyone, but she never let herself get too close to anyone.
He spoke simply, implying he knew what she was talking about. Taylor grinned and snapped her fingers. "That’s it! That’s the one.” Last time she took arithmacy was in second year, so she didn’t remember much.
She was shocked by his comment about her. Taylor stood there gaping like a fish for a moment, until she smiled and looked down and shrugged. “Thanks, I try. Takes one to know one.” She shoved her hands in her pockets and nodded. “Sure, sounds good to me! So is that what you guys do? Prefects, I mean. You’re kind of like patrol to make sure there’s no fighting or snogging going down in the halls? I’m not very educated on the subject. I mean, I’ve never been considered and I don’t blame them.”
Taylor didn’t understand what Ernie meant by his comment. Did he fear they were all going to go their separate ways and never see each other after graduation? Was he insinuating that her and Hannah wouldn’t make it but these last few months? Was he simply suggesting they enjoy themselves in their last year before proper adulthood? Yeah, she was going to go with the last one.
“Appreciate it.” He said, putting his hands into his pockets. There was the introverted person that Ernie was caused him to not say man words around people he didn’t know. There was something about being a prefect when talking to others that brought this newer sense of confidence but something about personally conversing with someone was completely different. “It’s mostly patrolling, making sure people aren’t fucking up, a great deal happens but it’s often petty.” Ernie shrugged.
“Snogging I usually don’t care as long as it’s not gross or close to anyone professors. Fights, pranks, and idiotic activities I try to call out immediately.” As they approached the door to the grounds, he took his hands out of his pockets to secure his bag once more. “Most people stop whatever they are doing when I’m around. When you’re 6′4 and always look pissed off, it has its perks with intimidation.”
Once they were outside, Ernie pulled out an apple from his backpack. “Want one?” He offered. “It’s from Australia where I’m from. I stocked up before the break.”

Taylor could detect that he wasn’t a man of mystery from his demeanor. She might now be the sharpest knife in the drawer when it came to academics, but she sure as hell knew people. Ernie wasn’t a bad guy, far from it, and she could see that. He didn’t seem mad or trying to be mean, he just seemed a little… burnt out, possibly? Kind of tired.
“I’m a pretty open book, mate.” She said, nodding to his request. “No secrets here.”
She cocked her head to the side and took a moment to answer his question. It was a fair question, and she knew it would be going through her mind if the situation was flipped; Ernie just had the balls to throw it in the open. She liked that, the directness. She could play games if it were necessary, but god it was exhausting!
It was hard to answer his question because the truth was both neither or them yet both at the same time. She just needed a second to get her thoughts together. “You know that whole math law that says if a = b and b = c then a = c? It’s kind of like that. You’re important to Hannah, and Hannah is becoming more and more important to me. I’m not doing it to impress her or ‘gain brownie points’ with her, I want to know you because I think the people that are important to her should be important to me too. Plus, I trust her judgement. I think you must be a good person for her to be friends with you..Why wouldn’t I want to be friends, or at least be cool with, someone who is a good person?” She shrugged. “I know that we’re all adults here and she can do what she wants; that kind of proves what I just said. I’m not going to try and use you as a stepping stone to get to Hannah, that’s…. not right. I value people more than that. I was hoping that maybe someday we could hang out together sometimes instead of it being awkward on the rare occasions the three of us happen to be together because you and I don’t really know each other. I mean, I think Hannah would like that; her best friend and… well… whatever I am, being friends?” Taylor looked up at him hopefully. She was telling the truth, but she knew she either nailed it right on the head or bit herself in the ass. Guess she was going to find out.
Ernie had often been told that his eyes told a lot about the person he’s become. He had a very tiny streak of grey in his hair that came from the tragedy that was 1996. Loss has become an old friend of his, and he was afraid of it taking hold of him again. He knew that he’d lose Hannah one day, and she was the one of few people he had left in this world anymore.
"We are the exact opposite then because I try to keep my book closed.” He hated letting people in, and he still had a problem with it even with Hannah.
Taylor was making sense, which Ernie hated. Here he was trying to throw her on a loop and that backfired as Ernie had to contemplate his own view of people. “The transitive property.” He said, following along with her words. Taylor wasn’t selfish, and she managed to turn a possible accusation into a benefactor to how morally good she was. His eyes were moving around Taylor as he drifted off into his mind for a few moments.
"You’re...a good person, Taylor.” He said, not even going to try and paint her as a bad person because he morally couldn’t bring himself to do it. Hannah deserved happiness in her life, especially with all that’s happened to her. He tried his best to hide the fear and anxieties associated with being possibly being alone, because that’s all this was.
“I can see why Hannah keeps you around.” Ernie’s hands went on his satchel, gripping the strap as he straightened his posture. “I was just about to go on a walk around the grounds if you wanted to come.”
“Why not make the most of these last few months.” His statement came off in a tone he didn’t intend to out loud, but he honestly didn’t care.

“Well I’m glad I’m not getting detention today.” Wow, this guy doesn’t seem to have much to say. Taylor thought. It wasn’t a negative connotation, just an observation. Some people were more talkers than listeners. She was definitely a talker, and sometimes had to tell herself to shut up when another was talking and to stop trying to give advice.
When he stopped to ask his question, Taylor stood taken aback. However, instead of looking like a fish out of water, she just grinned. “I’m glad you asked.” Typically, for someone to address her like that would somewhat turn her off, especially if she was just making friendly conversation. However, with Ernie, she actually did have a goal that was somewhat of an elephant in the room. She continued to grin and pointed at him for just a second. “I knew I’d like you, you don’t bullshit.” She stood tall, still baring a smile. “I just wanted to talk to you and get to know you a little more, you know? I know you and Hannah mean a lot to each other, and I really like Hannah so I thought we could be friends.” She laughed a little and gestured to herself. “I can be a bit overbearing at times, so if I’m scaring you and you want me to go then we can just talk another time. I don’t want to bug you.”
Ernie had a habit of not beating around the bush. This wasn’t some dramatic encounter where he would decide to hold everything in until he decided to blow up. The girl wasn’t stupid, Ernie could see that. She was adaptable to the curve ball that is Ernie MacMillan. The raise of his eyebrows resulted from her words, and Ernie was already curious as to what she was going to say. “I’m a man of transparency.” The boy stated, folding his arms together while leaning against the wall behind him.
“I’m going to be honest here, and I want you to be honest with me.” Ernie normally rubbed some the wrong way because he talked in a manner that made him come off as rude at times when in reality he wasn’t trying to come off that way. He wasn’t trying to sound rude or like an asshole, and Taylor being able to detect that would be a step. A very minuscule step, but it was something.
“Are you only interested in me because you want to genuinely get to know me or just so you can have some brownie points in your relationship with Hannah?” Ernie looked at Taylor, the stern look remaining on his face. “I’m not trying to sound rude or mean here but you don’t have to act interested in getting to know me? Hannah is an adult and her choices of people she wants to get involved with shouldn’t be altered by opinion of them. ” He shook his head. “You aren’t bugging me, but I don’t want someone to attempt to befriend me because I’m in the life of someone they’re interested in. We live in a world where someone can disappear from your life without any sort of warning, which is why I don’t want to associate with people who feel an obligation to get to know me.”

She knew she was being pushy, but it was sort of what she was known for. She was able to maintain his walking speed, even if it caused her to run a little bit. She knew he was tall, but damn, this guy was straight up huge.
She’d never been on a prefect’s route before, she wasn’t event entirely sure what prefects did. She was mostly on the receiving end of prefect punishments. “Well, I guess it’s good I’m with a prefect then. At least I can’t be busted by one for walking around the halls right?” She smiled brightly.
Taylor nodded. “Yeah, I’ll bet. They’ve been here long enough to know how everything works and stuff like that. Do you know how many times a little kid has asked me where the bathroom was? I don’t mind helping, but when it’s every five minutes it gets old. I’m sure you can relate, being in a position of authority and all.”
This girl was persistent. Ernie was normally an expert at saying as little words as possible for someone to eventually give up trying to talk to him but this girl could pull an entire monologue from just a few words. She’d also been able to keep up with him, which was saying something because a fast walk for Ernie is a sprint for some people.
“No busting here.” Ernie commented, choosing to walk down another corridor to avoid the larger crowd of students walking toward them. He was near the dungeons and could have somehow managed to get into their Common Room but it was a long shot and Ernie didn’t feel like attempting that.
Fuck. Ernie thought, realizing that he wasn’t going to just get out of his situation. He stopped right in his tracks, immediately turning to Taylor. “You’re very persistent, you know that? May I ask what you want from me right now?” He wasn’t trying to come off as rude but he realized that being blunt was the only option right now. There was going to be the words: Thank you for being a reason why my friend doesn’t hang out with me nearly as much anymore. Ernie had to avoid that because that would make him sound oddly jealous and selfish. Ernie didn’t have any sort of romantic feelings for Hannah, but for someone who was his emotional crutch at times, it made it hard when she was busy and Ernie was in one of his moods.

Taylor knew Hannah and Ernie were best friends and had been for a long time, everyone in the school pretty much knew that if they didn’t live under a rock. She’d never talked to him much in the past, but she never had a problem with him either. Most of the time she just saw him doing whatever he needed to do, and she admired that, especially since she could get sidetracked easily and he seemed like a focused guy.
She had desperately wanted to talk to him though, to get to know him because of Hannah. Taylor could tell how much he meant to the red headed girl, and who knows? Maybe the two of them could be friends too? Ernie sort of shrugged her off, but it didn’t bug Taylor much. She was used to it..
“No problem!” She shouted back happily, swinging her legs over the bench and standing up. “I’ll join you! Good timing mate, those benches are hard. One can only sit there for so long. I can be your back up if some of these first years decide to get smart.”
She just hoped she didn’t screw this up.
Ernie nodded his head, not trying to tell her no because it’ll only make the situation awkward and he didn’t want to come off as rude because Hannah would hear about it later and Ernie would look like an ass.
“Alright.” Truth be told be was just going to study but now he had to follow through with what he said which was mostly going to be him walking his usual route. Ernie wasn’t the best when it came to talking to people he didn’t know, and it made it worse when he wasn’t in the mood to talk.
“It’s been pretty boring now that the first-years aren’t complete idiots.” Ernie felt even more awkward with their height distance because he didn’t want to be appear to be talking down to someone. He waned to just shrug her off but it wasn’t in his nature no matter how hard he tried.

One thing about being at school during the Holidays was that no one was around, and that sucked for the most part, except when it came to go to bed. She didn’t have to worry about being woken up by anyone or being hindered in falling asleep because of another girl’s chatting. She knew the second Christmas break was over not because she’d been counting the days, but because of the footsteps in the dormitories.
For the most part though, she was happy everyone was back; the castle finally seemed as if it were back to it’s old bustling self. All of her friends were back. Hannah was back. Taylor smiled contently to herself as she sat at breakfast, reaching across the table for a biscuit. Across the hall she could still see students pouring in, many much tanner than they were when they left. Someone passed by her, and in the gust of wind they sent her way, she could recognize their scent.
“What?” She asked sarcastically, giving a playful smile. “You’re going to leave me for two weeks and not say hi to me? Rude.”
Ernie was a very protective person, and he hated the thought of his friends either getting hurt or the thought of them getting hurt under his watch. It’s why Ernie still beats himself up over the fact that his parents died and his friends were hurt in the Battle that was only months ago. He didn’t hate Taylor by any means but he didn’t know her well enough to have full trust in her with Hannah.
When he walked past Taylor, Ernie didn’t intend to come off as rude he just didn’t want the conversation to possibly go south. “Hello, I’m sorry but I have to go and do my prefect duties.”

“I think I should take you to Madam Pomfrey–” She quipped, “Delusions are a sign of insanity after all.” Hannah did not miss the fact that he hid the book, narrowing her eyes thoughtfully at her friend. Ernie was keeping secrets from here and Hannah would find out what they were. Eventually.
“Pssh, you wish this was the only time.” Hannah chuckled, making a mental note to tackle hug him every day at least once. Even if his face annoyed her most of the time.
Ernie rolled his eyes, half-way tempted to rub his knuckles through Hannah’s hair just to bother her but he’d rather not be punched at the moment. The book situation would surely come back up at a certain point but Ernie figured he could delay the conversation for a while. He was an expert at keeping information to himself.”I’m already crazy, they won’t tell me anything I don’t know.”
“This is a war I feel like I can’t win.” Ernie shuffled his bag to a more comfortable position. “I’m just glad to be back. I thought I was going to go insane sitting in my house all day long alone.”

“Psh, did I say I was sorry?” She smirked after recognizing who it was she ran into. Hannah casually glanced down at the book he held in his hand and froze slightly–recognizing it as a book on American culture. Her….father had moved to America when she was a baby, and ever since her mom passed away, she thought about trying to find him.
“Because I totally meant to hurt you.” Hannah teased, before pulling Ernie into a hug. A part of her new years resolution was to hug the people in her life more–which was getting to be a lesson in hilarity considering Ernie’s apparent dislike for physical affection.
“In my head you did.” He saw her look down at the book, which isn’t something he wanted to really have her see right now in case the question to as of what he had it out be brought up. He knows Hannah talked about tracking down her father and Ernie wanted to help that happen. Ernie quickly moved the book into his satchel.
While pulling Hannah into a hug, Ernie patted her on the back. He missed his friends, and being home by himself a lot caused a great deal of deep thinking.he didn’t want to go into. “If that’s some weird way of saying what I’m about to say, I accept it. I missed you too. This is the only time I’m allowing a hug.”

hannahxbbott:
Hannah was glad to be back at Hogwarts. Though the hallways and classrooms still reminded her of the events of the year previous, she doubted that feeling would ever truly go away. But as she unpacked her things in her dorm, a larger part of her was happy to be back to the castle, where things were easier and the world wasn’t so real.
Thoughts about her future plans have started to become the forethought of her mind over the winter break–one of the Austrailian reserves had offered her a mentorship program after she graduated Hogwarts, which was everything she wanted from her future. So she had a lot of things to think about the next couple of months.
She found herself exploring the hallways–having arrived two days before classes would start and without anything else to do as her homework had already been completed. Not looking where she was going, she found herself running into someone in front of her, “Oh gosh! I’m so sorry!”
Ernie had a book in his hand, studying up on muggle culture for his big trip that was going to take place this summer. He lived in a rural village with his family where there were muggles but Ernie found out that American culture was significantly different from his own. Problems of racism, technological advancements, and just overall people were different.
He still had no idea where he was going with his future and it was only killing him because everyone else seemed to have everything figured out. He was bumped into without realizing it, and the look he gave was neutral until he saw his best friend Hannah Abbott.
“You should be, Han. You could have hurt me.” He teased, giving her a chuckling after brushing himself off a bit.

its-gregory-not-goyle:
It was an odd thing for Gregory, getting presents for people. The last time he received a gift, prior to Astoria’s several gifts of sweets, was Christmas when Greg was seven. Father did not believe in gift-giving. People should not be rewarded for what is expected of them, that was his mindset. Then throughout the years, Crabbe, Malfoy, and the rest of them did not exactly do gift-exchanges around the holidays. Thus, the whole idea of gifts and tokens of appreciation were a long-forgotten concept in Gregory’s life.
Nevertheless, when mucking about Hogsmeade over the holiday, as the castle could get a bit empty and dull, he seemed to keep finding little knick knacks he thought his friends would enjoy. They were not extravagant, or anything. The Ministry’s hold on the Goyle family fortunes meant that he could not buy everything he felt they deserved, and that frustrated Greg more than he expected. It was odd, to care, but that was the situation he was in.
Ernie’s gift fit nicely into his coat pocket. He was not allowed to apparate, nor use the floo network, so he was destined to trudge the pathways connecting Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. The wind was cruel, so finally finding refuge in the Hog’s Head was a relief. Ernie was already there. The two shook hands, like real men do, of course. “Good to see you as well, Ernie. Happy Christmas.”
He pulled the Hufflepuff flask out of his pocket and rested it on the table in front of the Hufflepuff. “Figured you could use one of your own, rather than bumming off mine like at the ball. Saw it and thought it was quite fitting, so…”
Ernie was still wondering how to gauge this situation, especially when it came to his track record of having this weird feeling for someone and trying his best to keep it at a normal level to prevent himself from getting hurt or making something out of a situation that wasn’t happening. He nodded along with Greg’s greeting, quickly sitting down once they were situated.
Just as he was about to pull Greg’s gift from his coat, he saw a gift that was being given to him. Ernie smiled when he saw it was a Hufflepuff flask, something he needed but never got around to buying one himself. It did mean a lot, and his expression showed it. “Thank you...I...this honestly means a lot.” He put the flask out in front of him. reaching into his own pocket to get his gift.
Ernie wasn’t the best when it came to buying anything, so he thought he could give greg a gift that would hopefully be something he’d like. “Back where I’m from in Austraila we have some pretty unique plants..” He pulled out a smaller glass box that held a plant that filled the volume of the box. “I know it looks weird, but if you press and release your hand, it’ll produce a smell that’ll make you feel better ..” Ernie sighed, realizing his words made no sense.
“I’ll show you.” Ernie covered the top with his hand and quickly released it and the smell of the kitchens at Hogwarts filling some of the area behind them. “This is a pretty unique plant where I’m from and it lasts quite a while.”
“I figured this was something you could always have you with you. Sometimes it produces a smell that it knows you need at the time..I’ve enjoyed it thus far.”

“Oh this?” Ginny asked, pointing at the headband she was wearing. “I dunno who’s it is, some random bloke stuck it on my head when I was in the kitchen earlier.” She laughed before adding, “You can have it, if you like. I just thought it was funny.”
Ernie wondered what she had on her head but figured it was some kind of Gryffindor typed band. Curiosity shined brighter than his apathy whenever he was intoxicated, causing him to laugh and politely decline her offer. “I was just curious, but thank you for offering.”

Hannah had snatched two bottled of fire whiskey almost as soon as she entered the house. Planning on getting truly and utterly smashed during this party. Humming slightly she took a large sip of the bottle and moved across the room, falling into one of the couches.
She cracked open one of the bottles with a wave of her hand and began taking copious amounts of sips from the bottle. Swaying her head gently to the music that was playing overhead.
Ernie was already pretty drunk, mostly because he pre-gamed at a bar in Australia before coming. A majority of the time he was by himself in a corner waiting for something exciting to happen until he spotted Hannah.
He immediately hugged her before she had time to notice he wast here, the smell of alcohol being heavy on his breath. “How’s my favorite woman doing?”

It’s been a while / Greg + Ernie
(@its-gregory-not-goyle)
A week or two before Ernie received a letter from Greg, one that was completely unexpected. Believe it or not Ernie had gotten a gift for Greg but didn’t think that he would see him until after the holidays. He could only handle so much of his friends before wanting to spend some time alone, something that he hasn’t had since the last time he was home.
Ernie was bad when it came to buying gifts for other people, which is why he tried his best to make something for someone or find an item that may hold some sort of sentimental value. Greg hadn’t been too far in the front of his mind lately, and there were reasons for that to which Ernie didn’t want to explain or think about right now.
It was finally the day they agreed to meet in Hogsmeade where Ernie decided to floo into rather than apparate because it was easier and their fireplace had recently been cleaned. Greg decided to stay back at the castle, which was understandable and Ernie debated doing the same thing until his friends wanted to have their own thing.
It was cold and snow in Hogsmeade, and thankfully the two decided to meet at the Hog’s Head Inn which was still as dimly lit and boring as Ernie remembered it. He had decided to get their earlier because that was how he was and sat back waiting for Greg to arrive.
It wasn’t too long before Greg had walked inside the establishment, prompting Ernie to greet him with a handshake and a smile across his face. “Good to see you, Greg.”

ruslan-fletcher:
Of course he’d saved his Christmas shopping for practically the last minute. The problem was that Russ hardly ever knew what to get people, his Mum in particular–she was a Squib, and so he tried to avoid anything magical. Still, though, he was doing the rest of his shopping in Diagon Alley, so he’d have to make do with finding something here for her. It was going to be a struggle, he knew, but he also didn’t want to make a separate trip into Muggle London just to find something for his Mum. There had to be something here.
Besides his Mum, he was getting gifts for his friends, not that he knew any better what to get any of them. Russ never was good at shopping for people–hell, half the time he didn’t even know what he wanted for Christmas, much less what to get for other people. Sometimes he picked things up during the rest of the year on trips to Hogsmeade, but this year he had absolutely nothing. That was what brought him to Diagon Alley on a brisk day. Somehow his scarf had gone missing, so his neck was exposed to the cold, but otherwise he was wearing his jacket and a long sleeved shirt with jeans and boots. Russ at least tried to keep warm, especially when his Mum was paying attention. He always tried not to make her worry.
Russ stood off to the side and out of the way, list of people to shop for clutched in his hand. Fuck. This was going to be difficult.
Ernie was dealing with one of the most depressing days in the year for himself, moslty because he was alone in his large Austrailian home. His parents had been gone for around 8 months now, and the normal Christmas cheer just didn’t come this year.
He was buying gifts for Leanne and Hannah, but was at a standstill because he didn’t know exactly what to buy them. Whatever he bought he knew they would love. Hannah not so much because she would be blunt and honest if the gift sucked. The weather wasn’t making him feel any better and Ernie was completely into his thoughts that he didn’t realize he was seconds away into bumping into Ruslan - a fellow student of his at Hogwarts.
“Sorry. I’m..trying hard to figure out what the fuck I’m buying.”

Ready, Break? Ernie + Hannah
Ernie didn’t want to really go home. He was going to stay actually stay at Hogwarts over the break but his friends wouldn’t allow it. Ernie was going to go and visit LeAnne but asked Hannah to come with him as he went home, not wanting to be there alone because he knew it would be harder to leave the place. The last time he’d been home was the summer before leaving the place to begin his final year at Hogwarts.
Ernie stepped in first, taking a deep breath as things had looked the exact way he’d left it. His house was large, as he came from a prominent wizarding family. Hannah was behind him, probably preventing him from walking out and apparating back to King’s Cross. Pictures that his family had taken over the years were moving closer to the door, in shock that Ernie had even returned. Their family house-elf had to be somewhere around the area, and Ernie being his last master meant that he’d have to be in charge of something else left by his parents.
“Hannah..I really don’t want to be here right now.”

( CORMAC MCLAGGEN. )
“So?” he remarked, unable to really grasp the point. “That’s what he does, you know— annoy everybody.” Most people simply didn’t like the energy of Peeves’ antics, whereas, Cormac didn’t really get why anyone would make that much of a fuss over something that hardly concerned them. “Don’t you think that all the ‘eye-rolling’ and ‘scoffing’ only prods him into sticking around longer?” Cormac was certain of it, but he spoke as if he was lending a genuine idea out. Like it wasn’t basic, common sense. “Unless, it’s you who’s really enjoying his company.”
“To be honest, don’t really know how I feel. He’s like that annoying little brother that always finds a way to you.” He shrugged. Ernie was the youngest in his family so he never felt like he was the annoying little brother, but it was a big matter of perception. He had watched the game where Cormac hurt Ron, not knowing exactly what had happened but it clearly wasn’t good. “Congrats on winning the game yesterday.”
