Still Here: Art on HIV/AIDs 11/10/19 at Stamp Union Art Gallery
I decided for this pentathlon event to go back to the Stamp gallery because I was very intrigued by this exhibit. There was a lot of advertising for students to see this exhibit and it looked very interesting from a far. When I actually went in and read about the pieces I learned a lot about how many people fight against stereotypes and misinformation, also how groups of people were impacted by the media representation of HIV/AIDS. I was really inspired by all the different art styles and media used to portray each artists different interpretation on some of the themes such as,gender and sexuality. The pieces really portrayed to me peoples emotion on how they are treated, which really made me see the beauty in how art can be aesthetically pleasing, but also portray a powerful message.

10/17/2019 Mwenso and the Shakes (USA): Harlem 100 at the Clarice
I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed the performance. It beautifully combined jazz and Harlem music performance with history about famous Harlem musicians. I am inspired to listen to more styles of music because I thought I didn’t like Jazz, but I really enjoyed the music. The vintage set up of the stage and the performers outfits drew my attention to them. Michela Marino Lerman, a special guest, tap danced along to different instruments and Vuyo Sotashe sang a beautiful rendition of “Deep River,” a traditional African American Spiritual.

10/2/19, Clarice Performing Arts Center, “The Visit”

This last Wednesday on October the second I wen to the Clarice Performing Arts Center and watch the play, “The Visit.” The student Actors and Actresses did very well portraying the Plays message of greed overpowering peoples morals. I have never seen a play that has a deep message and is more serious, so I was very happy how invested into the plot I was. Even though it only had one stage setting I thought the use of the layout and different props was very creative and interesting. There was some live music being played during certain pivotal scenes that I think really sold the emotions that were supposed to be portrayed. I play the violin and enjoy how it can create different tones of music, so seeing music being incorporated to produce emotions really inspires me to practice playing again.

NextNOW Reflection Questions
What did you see/hear/learn that was completely new to you?
Doing the origami station was really new to me. I only learned how to make one shape, the crane, when I was younger and never had the opportunity to learn more. It was a great experience to not only see the skill it takes to create them, but also make something to take home with us. I learned how to make a butterfly and it was a really fun craft that I did and enjoyed
What was your favorite performance/experience? Why was it your favorite? (2 points)
My favorite experience was the Artechouse: Lucid Dreaming. It was my favorite that evening because I got to choose the background I could use and there were multiple options. I liked the combination of art and technology that went into making the experience and how easy it was to use. The way the backgrounds moved was also very pretty and entertaining to watch.
What instances did you notice where artists were collaborating or working beyond the boundaries of a particular arts discipline? How do you think collaboration and interdisciplinarity are helping to push the boundaries of what we understand art to be? (3 points)
One of the events available the first day was called SEOULSPICE and it was Korean food re-imagined with a more modern take. I think coming up with different recipes and food is very artistic even though it goes beyond what we think as an art discipline. I think this example of art pushing boundaries and being open to interpretation helps show how versatile art can be. It also helps people feel art is more inclusive because we all make and eat food that cater to what we like to eat. Overall collaborations, I think, help expand the art community and can relay messages more clearly through the use of different mediums.

“New Arrivals 2019 Opening”, at the Stamp Gallery, on September 11 2019.
This was my first time going to an art exhibition and I was really intrigued by all the contemporary art displays. Many of the pieces used multiple mediums, such as combining painted scenery and embroidery or ropes and fabric, which really caught my attention and made me want to take a minute and learn about these pieces. The mixture reminds me a lot of how many people in the Art scholars, including me, are interested in learning a wide array of art skills. I think seeing examples of different skills has made me want to learn and have art more in my life. I liked how a lot of the pieces that I saw pertained to current topics such as global warming and immigration, this really inspired me to look at more art work and try to figure out what its meaning could be.
