Watched the live action and its ok, animated it better but it had its moments and i always did enjoy the story ao i enjoyed seeing the story unfold again.
I have one major problem and no one is talking about it.
Stoick doesn't apologize. He apologizes twice in the animated. One after he saves hiccup and toothless from the water and the other time he apologizes when he thinks hiccup is dead
In the la he doesnt do that and it annoys me. That apology was so important to me and they took it out. And no one is talking about it.

Warning i have not seen the live action, but i am going to very soon . I will update when I have. All that I say is knowledge I have found from peoples accounts of the movie
I think I found out why I really dont like the live action for httyd. I absolutely love the story for the first movie and the live action is basically a retelling of the first movie.
I think retelling the story is fine it means more people get to see the amazing story that I love.
But this leads to my issues with it.
1. A lot of people are praising the live action specifically for the story, which is basically the exact same as the animated story.
I feel this is discrediting the oringal writers who did not work on the live action, and it does not sit right with me
2. I wish they leaned into change more.
As many people know, the animated film and books are really different for one. Camicazi is not in the flim or any dreamworks content. We have Astrid but Astrid and Camicazi are NOT the same character.
I wish the same sentiments would show for Live Action Astrid and Animated Astrid. Live actions Astrid has different motivations (that is to be cheif) than Animated Astrid (to protect her people).
It makes me wish they made Live action Astrid be her own character like they did with Camicazi and Astrid. Sure there would be some hate as Astrid is no longer in the story but that hate would of been directed to the directors rather than Nico (who does not deserve the hate).
I think a character who wants to be cheif, who is angry at Hiccup due to his privilege, would be a really interesting thing to explore. This character would also be a good representation of the village's opinion and a good reference to Snotlout from the books. My problem is that Astrid is not that character.
Astrid of the animated film is strong because she has to be - the village is at war. She just wants to protect her village. I can see her becoming cheif only to protect the village if she must - but a lot of her actions make sense from the perspective of someone who is trying their best and seeing her future leader not put in effort and get angry at them for it.
I feel the live action has combined these characters, and it does not sit right with me. I think the characters would be intresting as separate characters (i think both characters could work in the same story as well(but I feel if they did that the one that wants to be cheif will get a lot of hate))
I know I talked about Astrid a lot, but that is the only big change I know about, but I do wish they leaned into the change more and provided a new perspective like I said with Astrid.
they could have explored other things in depth, like what happened in between the red death and Hiccup waking up. Explored how other tribes handle dragons (as they established that berk is composed of warriors from all over). These are all things that were touched upon in the live action (to my knowledge) but not explored too deeply - but if they did, it would turn the Live Action from a Retelling into an Adaptation. Like the books and animated film.

As sad as i am that a good portion of live action cast looks so much different from their animated counterpart I realize they would make for really good characters in my au when i need more teens that isn't the main 6. Espically the live action Astrid as she is really pretty, but Astrid (as in her animated counterpart) obviously exists in my au.
Having animated Astrid, Camicazi and Live Action Astrid in one story would be super cool and possibly create some really cool interactions (as i know in the live action astrid's character has different motivations)
