so I saw barbie today and I absolutely adored it. it’s a beautiful movie and I’m sure much more eloquent people have already talked about what it meant to them and how barbie and gloria made them feel seen as women, but as a transmasc person I’ve been thinking a lot about allan. this point has probably been made before but I just really resonated with allan as an in-between space, not quite barbie or ken but somewhere in between. allan, who fits all of ken’s clothes but still isn’t a ken. allan, who has no multiples and is vastly outnumbered by barbies and kens. allan, who is allowed into the kendom because he’s close enough to being a ken but finds that he doesn’t feel at home there because he finds the patriarchy just as insufferable. allan, who sympathizes and rallies with the barbies and their cause even when he could be welcomed by the kens. I felt a lot like allan, that almost-but-not-quite manhood, that loneliness, that remaining discomfort in male-dominated spaces, relating to the experiences of women and rallying with them even if you don’t quite fit there either. barbie’s message about womanhood was powerful and resonated with me but at the same time it wasn’t really mine. of all characters I felt most seen by allan.

i was in mitski's youtube premiere and the live comment section was a mess. mitski clearly performing a song about the frustration of being an artist in this century, dancing until madness a la black swan and people in the comments, unable to produce one coherent and original thought were chanting "mommy? sorry. mommy? sorry" like ... i'm sorry if you need to stan mitski so you can add it to your carrd.co

for real once you realize that you can actually wear whatever you want and call yourself whatever name and pronouns you want and have whatever interests you want and be whatever gender you want your life gets so much better and more fun
