❝Nah,  I  don’t  FEEL  a  thing.  Hasn’t  anyone  ever  told  you  ‘shit  happens?’❞  Axel  wonders  why  he  bothers  opening  his  mouth  when  he  can  hardly  CONTROL  the  lies  that  spill  from  his  lips.  He  takes  the  QUIETEST  tone  in  response  to  her;  why  open  up  at  all  only  to  colour  the  conversation  with  deceit  two  sentences  later?  

GUILT?  REMORSE?  SORROW?  His  chest  feels  heaviest  when  he  thinks  about  these  things,  but  he  doesn’t  tell  Gemiya  this.  His  MEMORIES  are  full  of  them,  and  of  words  UNSPOKEN,  things  he  SHOULD  HAVE  SAID  to  the  PEOPLE  WHO  MATTERED  MOST.  He  doesn’t  tell  her  that  things  could  be  so  DIFFERENT  if  he’d  just  been  HONEST.  Brutality  sparks  through  his  veins,  and  the  SURVIVOR  in  him  whispers  darkly  in  each  ear;  he  can’t  tell  her  about  GUILT!  What  if  she  uses  it  against  him?  Irrationally,  it’s  him  or  her  feelings  and  he  squashes  any  idea  of  honesty  in  favour  of  these  dark  notions.  Axel  reminds  himself  to  keep  as  DISTANT  as  possible,  but  to  wear  the  guise  of  a  FRIEND;  he’s  known  her  for  so  long,  and  still?  This?  PATHETIC.

He  ends  his  internal  war  with  something  as  simple  as  a  low  chuckle.  He  LAUGHS  dryly  at  her  question  and  shakes  his  head. ❝Nah,  Gem - Gem,  don’t  overthink  it.❞
