(big dog head with dog eyes), 2024
Materials : recycled corrugated cardboard, hot glue, papier mache (flour, glue, water, newspaper, paper towels), acrylic + gouache, found plastic pear, gloss finish with metal hardware on rear.
On view at Toutoune Gallery in Toronto until end of January.
Below the photograph is an image created between myself x AI in 2022 that inspired the above piece. My views and concerns have changed a lot since my experiments in 2022. Even then I had some worries, but I was also incredibly curious and was given the access to play around for multiple months with free credits that replenished daily. (I thankfully didn't spend a dime)
I came out of it with a breadth of imagery that has continued to inspire me, not unlike how I am inspired by found imagery on the web, bootlegs and other odd and lost ephemera, toy design, novelties, mass produced objects like stickers etc.
I spent most of my credits on mixtures of words, textures, colours and shapes to create a world of miniatures. Eventually the machine was trying to make too much sense of my requests and the playful and creative aspects melted away for me. I am still curious about the image making uses of this type of tool but in the hand of corporations, no different in goal than the corporate art of popular mass culture films, music and gaming etc, everything is on a continuous soulless trajectory. Haha, sigh. There is a lot of art that I already ignore.. understand it's all incredibly subjective, but most art sucks (to me).
I enjoyed my results but I don't enjoy the context in which this all 'exists'.
I have remade these digital curiosities anew. From the unreal-state of this nightmarish tech, material works were eventually born from my hands. It did not feel dissimilar to me than how I used to enjoy utilizing photoshop to clash together found imagery. Being playful with things found online that didn't necessarily belong to me, but felt as though they belong to us all.
The art of appropriation through some extra 'filters' that can leave you blind. I wish one could access a reversal mechanism with AI, to see all the pieces of the puzzle that was used to construct a resulting image. Clearly a lot of what is concocted through AI are deliberate plagiarisms: can you imagine requesting 'work' in the voice or style of a specific artist and believing that what the machine has created is 'unique'? (Ahem: Paul Schrader lol)
Sorry to blab but I will have continued rambled thoughts about AI technology as we keep seeing all of this develop esp in mass culture. My feelings in terms of AI in the art world is that it probably will eventually be seen as a fad that has eaten itself. (Perhaps it already has. AI CEOs are already admitting that their algorithms have already scraped all there is to scrape.)
...
#buby bubb is where i was sharing ai stuff#primarily had been using for sticker fodder#and of course inspiration for art too

I printed 25 shirts this week! Hope you like them.

Doggy Remembers to Eat Fruit
Printed 25 Shirts the other day ~ Mostly adult unisex sized T-shirts, a couple of adult long sleeves, a couple of youth long sleeves, 4 neon soccer style jerseys and 1 sweatshirt.
The printed design is all the same throughout and is printed on the front as well as the back of the garments with varying details on the sleeves. A mix of coloured silkscreen inks used : neon pink, neon green, bright blue, white and bright red.
Most shirts have been bleached and dyed (not the jerseys).
Double check the measurements! Free Shipping worldwide! Now in the online shop
Thanks!

Sharing this again because I want to revisit this craft...

YO I made some paper today and documented it to hopefully guide some of you folks into making paper for the first time.
(it’s so easy !)
Some extra notes about the ‘Things you’ll need’ list:
You can buy a paper-making mesh and frame at many arts/hobby stores. The one I am using in these images isn’t a favourite tbh. I had owned a previous one that was much sturdier ~ instead of a loose mesh and a back plastic thing, my previous one had two wooden frames (one with mesh attached and one to place on top). I suggest getting one of those if you can.
You are also better off using a shitty blender - not the same one you use for food - in case you end up getting too experimental (side note, don’t try to blend cotton balls. It messes the mechanism up!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~
STEPS:
*Rip up pieces of paper to place in the blender. The more the better ! Try mixing different colours, papers with text, blank paper, wrapping paper ~ experiment and have fun :o)
*Pour some water in until all of the paper bits are covered.
*Blend it! I find that sometimes it is best to blend in short spurts. Blend until it turns to mush.
*Pour the mixture in the tub (which should have been filled with water before you begin)
*Mix it up with your hands (it feels nice!!)
*Now is the time to put extra bits that you may not have wanted to blend up. Things like : flower petals, sequins, paper confetti, ripped up cotton balls, sparkles etc.
*Next, put your mesh together (meaning frame on top, mesh underneath it and plastic on the bottom) Hold it together tightly!
*Place it in the water and gently move it around. Get a small wave pool going ~ try and get as much or as little onto the frame as you like. Making paper as thin as a tissue is possible but it’s pretty difficult to get it to spread evenly! You can also make it very very thick - REMEMBER it will thin out in the next step.
(if you find that you are having trouble filling the entire mesh with pulp it probably means that you haven’t blended up enough paper or you could be moving the frame too fast)
*Once you have a good distribution, pull it up and hold it over the tub and let some water drip out ~~~~ Take off the top wooden frame.
*Get to your smooth/clean surface (I personally use a sheet of plexiglass) and gently but quickly flip the mesh/plastic tray over. Take the plastic piece off.
*Now take your shamwow thing ($1 at canadian tire!) or sponge equivalent and press it on the mesh (your paper pulp is beneath the mesh still) and take out as much water as possible!
*Take off the mesh screen. Let dry ~ This can take hours. When I am finished filling the plexiglass sheet with multiple papers, I prop up the plexi and place a fan in front of it.
*When the sheets are no longer wet or cold to the touch, and are easily peeled off your surface, you are done!
There you have it !!! Now you have made paper. OvO
I hope someone will find this useful. ♥
