I would listen to you yap about this and write it down like a court stenographer this is so fascinating
i could talk about it forever.
the whole thing that draws me into that “morally gray guy adopts girl” trope is obviously the idea that a man would not only get to know and want to protect a young girl without ill intent, but also actively choose to parent a her and be present in her life. i feel like that appeals to a lot of people and is why stories with that trope resonates so deeply with a lot of women specifically.
however.
i look at the men around me, the fathers that i know, and even my own father, and i feel that a lot of the time (not all the time, but a lot) they do not make even half of the effort as these fictional men do in stories with this trope.
but let’s disregard the realism of a man taking care of a young girl with only good intentions: there is still a problem of said young girl growing up.
i see women online talking about how their relationship with their father changed once they got older and/or started to resemble their mothers more in their behaviors. it’s something that i also experienced. it’s not uncommon for a distance to be created between a father and his daughter once that girl becomes a woman with her own moral compass, opinions, and agency.
so i think that the “morally gray guy adopts girl” trope could be expanded upon a lot by extending past the girl’s adolescence.
what happens when she becomes an adult? what happens when she can make her own decisions? take care of herself? what happens if she begins to develop behaviors her pseudo-father doesn’t like? what if she realizes she doesn’t like aspects of his personality? what if they disagree on major issues? what if he does things she does not agree with and vice versa?
how would they move past these problems? would they even move past them, or would one of them give up? would the girl realize she’s better off without him? would he realize he doesn’t love the adult version of his pseudo-daughter like he did when she was a kid? would he only truly care for the young version of her, or would he be able to love her as she grows up despite their differences?
these questions become even more important to ask when the world this trope takes place in is a violent one. most of the stories with this trope are apocalyptic or brutal in some way (ie the last of us, the punisher, the walking dead etc etc), and the father figure character oftentimes does really violent and sometimes immoral things to protect this young girl, and i wonder where a line would be drawn in that relationship. at would point would his protection be too much?
i think this trope is very popular for good reason, but there’s only so many movies and shows and video games i can play with this dynamic until i start to think too hard about its longevity within its story.

one of the things i really really really want to write in an original book is the deterioration of the relationship in the “morally gray guy accidentally adopts a girl” trope.
i love the trope when it’s happy, but i also feel it’s not always realistic? the girl will get older and change and have her own opinions, and a man will always be a man. fathers and father figures aren’t always good.
