TGAA OC TIME!!
Thank you to everyone who's shown interest in my silly little guy! I finally managed to put together my thoughts about him, so here they are!
I will not hold back.
If he had a profile in the Court Record, it would probably look something like this:
Name: Ambrose Bell
Age: 36 [at least during TGAA's canon although he isn't in England at the time]
Description: The defendant. A music teacher formerly working abroad who returned to his home studio in London yesterday only to find it broken into and his travel companion dead in the attic. Though he seems much younger, he is a childhood friend of Lord van Zieks.
Now for more details!
Background/Backstory
Ambrose is from an old British family, elevated into peerage for loyally serving as court musicians and composers and risen up the nobility ladder through their fame, philanthropy and marriage. Before his title was transferred to one of Ambrose’s uncles, it was held by his father Alfred Bell.
Ambrose’s father was never very interested in his noble duties or his family or commitments of any kind really. He forces himself to do as he’s told long enough to father two sons but leaves England shortly after the birth of Ambrose’s little brother Althelstan to fulfill his dream of being a traveling musician. He adopts a pseudonym, Alfredo Canto (he doesn't have any ties to Italy other than that he enjoys the language and the music), and never returns to England again. He sends his sons a gift every year, usually in the form of an instrument from whatever country he currently finds himself in, but Ambrose only spends about two years as a child and one chance meeting as an adult with him where he learns that while his father is proud of what Ambrose made of his life, he does not regret leaving his family behind.
Ambrose thus only grows up with his brother Athelstan, his half-sister Lyra and his mother Cecilia, who is very unhappy with the path her husband chose and thus is very careful (as in: very strict) with her children, so they don't turn out the same way. Two years after Alfred leaves, the Bell family manages to transfer the title over to one of Alfred’s brothers and Cecilia finally manages to get a divorce but it's only eight years later that she remarries and has Lyra. She works as a music teacher and is hired by Theodore and Magdalena van Zieks to teach their one, then later two sons.
But Ambrose doesn't meet Barok through his mother's work. Instead, Barok's parents send him to the same boys' choir that Ambrose is part of in hopes he will lose some of his shyness and make some friends. (Cecilia had pitched the idea to the Van Zieks before in regards to Klint but Klint turned out to have less of a talent for singing and more for making the other boys laugh, so he was kicked out.). Barok, age 5, arrives absolutely terrified of all the children staring at him and expecting him to introduce himself, so he doesn't say a single word. Ambrose, age 8 and understanding his struggle, decides to take him under his wing and at the end of the rehearsal, Barok is comfortable enough to very quietly say goodbye to him.
As they are both rather reserved - and maybe because they fit together as older and younger brothers - the two become friends. Barok admires Ambrose for being comfortable with being the center of attention whereas Ambrose envies him a little for his relationship with Klint, that he has an older sibling he can rely on, and for the freedom he experiences after Magdalena and Theodore die on a voyage from the Netherlands back to England and Klint begins raising him.
Even though they attend different boarding schools, they regularly meet and as Cecilia and Alfred were friends with the Van Zieks parents, their families spend holidays together and continue this tradition after Theodore’s and Magdalena’s death.
Ambrose eventually leaves London to study classical singing at a conservatoire in France and only occasionally returns to England to visit his family and friends. With time, he and Barok grow a little distant although not intentionally, simply naturally. By the time Barok graduates and becomes a prosecutor, Ambrose has already decided to stay in France and settled down to become a music teacher like his mother.
When Klint dies, Ambrose receives the news through a letter from his mother. He immediately writes to Barok but only receives an answer from one of his servants: due to his brother's sudden and gruesome death, Lord van Zieke is not in a state to reply to any correspondence himself; the funeral will be held shortly. Ambrose prepares to travel to England to attend Klint's burial and console his friend but he is to appear on stage at a concert and the management refuses to allow him to ditch his performance, it's only the brother of a friend. Ambrose doesn’t have the courage to leave anyway. He writes to Barok, offering to visit him after the funeral. The short servant's reply lets him know that Barok will not be taking any visitors soon, not only is he in deep mourning, he is busy with a case as well. Ambrose takes that rejection as final and out of shame, never writes Barok again.
Ambrose’s work is very fulfilling to him. He loves to see others become passionate about music as well and he likes working with (most) of the children he teaches. Ambrose is a kind and patient man and it makes him happy to see his students grow and become more confident in their skills but he has rather thin skin and is too anxious to discipline the more unruly students, so not everything is that easy.
He occasionally performs in mostly concerts and some operas and after some time, has coworkers and friends to visit and places to stay in pretty much all of Europe. On the occasions that he is in England professionally, he entertains the thought of sending his old friend an invitation to his performance but having taken that second rejection as Barok being upset with him because he missed Klint's funeral, he never goes through with it.
When his mother becomes sick in her advanced age, Ambrose uses the opportunity of being invited to a concert in London to leave France behind and come home after almost fifteen years. Unfortunately, not everything goes according to plan...
Personality
Despite the fact that he makes a living by teaching people music and standing on stages, Ambrose is a rather awkward, anxious man. On stage, he knows what to do and nobody can come up to him to tell him to do it better; real life is much more spontaneous. While he is so polite and forthcoming that it hinges on self-neglect, Ambrose also often comes across as self-centered and superficial – because he is but not in the manner that one might assume.
Because of his relative fame and social status, Ambrose spends a lot of thoughts on himself, overthinking what other people expect from him, how he will appear to them, what actions and words will reinforce or harm his image although that doesn’t mean that his interpretation of people and situations are correct. That also includes fretting about his appearance: Ambrose is afraid of aging since he might lose his youthful charm and become unappealing to his audience.
With all that worrying going on, Ambrose is unfortunately prone to sweat a lot. When he is in a particularly strong worry spiral, one can observe how his eyes go wider and wider, how his hair becomes more and more disheveled and how perspiration begins to collect on his forehead. Ignoring how obvious his discomfort is, Ambrose always tries to smile through the pain although at some point, it just becomes concerning. However, Ambrose comes prepared: he never goes anywhere without a bottle of perfume on his person and can restore himself to his usual beauty and composure with just a few sprays – similarly to Florent L’Belle’s first breakdown but with a sightlier result. The only downside to this treatment is that he reeks of perfume albeit it classy and pleasant.
Aside from these misinterpreted first impressions, Ambrose is a very good-natured soul. He is kind and passionate about his occupation. He is remarkably good with kids and considers his young students as well as his ever-growing collection of instruments (whenever he spends money, it is either on an instrument, perfume or clothes) his own children. Ambrose has a lot of friends and acquaintances from all sorts of classes and countries that can rely on him as much as he can rely on them. Although his anxiousness restricts him from standing up for them and himself, he cares about them more than anything else.
As an artist, Ambrose tends to be dramatic in his speech and movements. For instance, he holds his hand to his forehead like a fainting maiden or quotes passages from songs.
Notes on design/name choice
Ambrose's outfit is inspired by 17th century/early 18th century justaucorps, I've exaggerated the shape of the coat to make it bell-shaped in reference to his last name; the more nervous Ambrose gets, the more the wide shape deflates just because I think it would look silly even if it wouldn't be visible most of the time.
Ambrose's parents are named after Cecilia, the Christian patron saint of music and musicians, and Alfredo, the love interest in Verdi's La Traviata. "Canto" is Italian for "I sing" (intentionally uncreative). Lyra is named after the lyre, the instrument. Athelstan does not have a fancy music name because he actually doesn’t go into music like the rest of his immediate family but goes on to manage the family finances and charity stuff.
I tried to work as many musical symbols as possible into his design: the curl on his forehead is supposed to be a treble clef, the curls around his ears are bass clefs, the embroidery on the front of his coat is in the shape of eighth rests, the "lightning bolts" framing the bell in the family crest are flipped quarter rests, the five lines on his coat sleeves represent the five staff lines in sheet music.
Tumblr media
It's been a while since I've named Ambrose but I'm relatively certain I decided on his name while scrolling through Behind the Name. As Ambrose's personality and the case he is involved in is partially inspired by The Picture of Dorian Gray, I wanted to find a name with a similar vibe to Dorian Gray's. So I chose a relatively short but fancy-sounding first name and a one-syllable last name: "Ambrose" in reference to ambrosia, the food of the Greek gods (the German Wikipedia article mentions that doctors in early medicine would name elixirs of life and beauty products "Ambrosia", so that's fitting too) ; "Bell" since well, he is a musician.
Other bits
Ambrose's animal mascot is a nightingale.
Ambrose is aroace. He likes the idea of having children of his own but since that’s difficult to realize for a man of his standing and in his time without marriage and sex, it’s not something he considers realistic. But he is already more than happy and content with his family, friends and students!
He’s a countertenor because I love countertenors and can do whatever I want. Although his voice type makes him sound younger than he is, there is some maturity to it.
My favorite little tidbit that is not really related to anything is that Barok owns a handful of instruments, including a harpsichord that's been passed down to him from his Dutch ancestors and Barok doesn't care about it very much since he can't play it, but Ambrose very quickly puts two and two together and realizes that Barok owns a genuine harpsichord made by members of the Ruckers dynasty (very influential instrument makers, the Stradivarius of harpsichords according to Wikipedia) and has to try very hard to not grab Barok by the lapels and shake him as in,
Barok: "This harpsichord has been passed down to me. I've been told my family had it made in the 17th century, when we were centered around Antwerp, but I do not believe anyone has played it after my great-grandfather. I've neither had the time nor was in a state of mind to learn to properly play it, so frankly, it has been sitting here unused for quite some time. I cannot even remember when I last had it tuned."
Ambrose: *frothing at the mouth* "H-how fascinating... :)"
(I've got to see some Flemish harpsichord in Antwerp and they're soooo pretty!!!! They have paintings inside!!!)

I didn't have any references so if Barok's outfit is a historical mess then you know why. I just wanted to give him a hat
