Linnet nodded along to Mim's mini-museum monologue, and then swiped another finger-full of frosting. She sucked it off her finger and smacked her lips at all that sweetness, which made her whole mouth tingle pleasantly.
She heard of plenty of music museums. Jess and Jo had offered to take her to Dollywood (which had a museum element, not just the theme park) as a huge graduation trip, and if Linnet hadn't decided to cross the ocean early, she might have taken them up on it. Maybe she'd still do it once she set herself up for a visit. She felt due for one. It'd been over a year since her feet touched North Carolina soil.
But anyway, she wasn't supposed to be inviting homesickness in. She should think about prom.
"There are a lot of options. That's what makes it hard for me, I s'pose," she mentioned. "I could go all kinds of directions, just like you said! I might just make something on my own though. That's art in itself, right? If I do up some old fabrics in my own style."

Danced professionally? Linnet wouldn't go that far! Shore, she had years of lessons under her belt-- jazz, tap, and some contemporary. But she always used what she learned in theatre productions, most of which were in school, a few in community theatre. She'd never bee paid for her dancing, no way jose! She'd not charge for it either. Now, her voice? That was her money maker.
She wasn't sure how to check the box, then. Maybe she could put an asterisk and explain in a sentence that she was no Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers?
Or maybe she was just plum overthinking it.
She decided to check yes and then explain it in the place Vee indicated. Her role shouldn't have much dancing anyway, in comparison of Velma and Roxie.
"Oh, it isn't as impressive as it sounds, saying it like 'a decade of experience,'" said Linnet, smirking at herself as she scribbled her explanation. "I took classes in jazz, tap, and a year of contemporary. Just studio classes, once a week, it ain't like I was a serious dancer or anything. I pick up choreo quick as snake spit though."
She flashed a smile. "And I think I'm pretty graceful! A good sense of balance. I reckon that's my fairy blood."

Linnet had that song in her head again.
It was Jeremy's promposal song-- nothing more, nothing less. But something about it felt alive, having a mind of its own, separate from Linnet and Jeremy. It came to her in the strangest times when she was doing something completely different.
Like now, for example. Here she was, working on a paper for her exam and the song tapped on the window of her mind, wanting to be let in.
She chewed on a piece of her hair, trying to chase it out.
But then Jeremy himself interrupted.
Linnet glanced up. "Oh yeah, I could go for a break too." She sighed long like a gentle morning breeze. "Brain feels way too full!"

'Cause I'm not that small town naive little girl I've always been, so don't fence me in I've given that big city life a whirl And this little girl is a woman of the world
Oh, I'm a woman, I'm a woman of the world I went across the country but I'm not just some country girl I've seen the skyline and an ocean full of pearl So never underestimate a woman of the world

"Oh, he'll be fine on his own for a spell," Linnet said, waving a hand like Jeremy was a tote bag she might hang up somewhere and let swing on its own.
That's not how she really felt, of course. It was just the type of talk she learned to talk, having a best friend like boy-crazy Samira. She knew the art of mooning over boys and also the art of trash-talking 'em, declaring your life better off if that became the shape of the narrative. She'd done her fair share of both, considering her whimsical heart. She reckoned it was the type of thing Mim would want to do too.
"Speaking of prom, you know what you're gonna do for it, dress-wise? I can't make heads or tail of that theme. Maybe on account of me never going to a museum in my life," Linnet snorted. Then considered, and popped her lips. "Well, there was that one time-- the Morehead Planetarium at Chapel Hill but that was a field trip and I don't think it's a real museum, just one of them institutions humans give their money to."

"Uh oh, and here I have a reputation for the irresponsible," quipped Linnet, flashing her raised eyebrows at Vee, eyes crinkling ever so much, like she was thinking about what she could get away with.
This was all mess, naturally. Linnet might have a naughty streak-- she was young! Who didn't? -- but she wasn't gonna bring any trouble to the cast.
The cast was sacred.
The theatre, in general, was sacred. Stepping into the West Charlotte theater her freshman year had been like coming back to a part of herself she lost along with the holler. Oh, she'd learn to get comfortable in places that weren't hers, from her shared bedroom at Mama Eddie's to her place at Jess and Jo's. But that home sweet home feeling? Only the theatre came close.
"I'm just messing," she made sure to add then as she signed her name. "And as for dance, why, yes I do! I got just about a decade of lessons," she remarked. "Should I note that somewhere?"

Linnet didn't think too much about the whole prom court thing. Where she came from, it was all a popularity contest, and Linnet was not popular-- least, not outside her circles she wasn't. It was just one of them human things that struck her odd, though a mite charming, for the humans just loved to give themselves awards for little to no reason!
A silver-lining way of looking at it of course was to say-- How nice, to celebrate little things.
And Linnet did try for silver-lining thinking.
She grinned at Jere. "Oh, I'm gonna be out there whirling more times than not. Just you wait, Jeremy Johnson, I'll dance you 'round so much we'll burn holes in your socks before the night is through," she teased.

Linnet hardly thought she was talking in idioms and metaphors, though the surprise compliment zinged through her and settled as a half-smile on her lips.
She couldn't fully smile since talk had turned to the great tragedy in her life.
Now, Linnet did not hide practically anything in her background. Secrets implied shame, and Linnet had nothing to be ashamed of. But neither was talkin' about holler destruction all that pleasant and fun for an afternoon. Linnet didn't want to dwell on all the details. So she'd say it plain-- no idioms or metaphors for shore this time.
"Ah, well, I was born in a place called Sugar Holler on Sugar Mountain. But they built a factory up there, and it killed the land. My kinfolk had to leave, and there ain't anything left of it now," she said. Then she added, "You don't got to apologize or anything like that -- I'm alright. But when I talk about my holler, that's what I'm talkin' about, rather than Enchantra."

If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; if I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain.

Linnet needed to set this weirdness out her mind. This was a moment meant for living in. After all, though she and Jeremy hadn't talked about it, not for a flit, she knew that he'd be on his way out of town sooner rather than later. He was graduating, and he had bigger dreams than sleepy Swynlake. This place was his beginning, not his end.
So that meant prom might be something like a good-bye for them. Not entirely-- there was still the whole summer. But it'd be a landmark.
She didn't wanna mess it up, no matter how fast her heart sped in her chest, hummingbird-frantic.
Thankfully, all those years on stage made it easy to find her spotlight. She smiled and then leaned in and kissed Jeremy on the lips. "And you're special too-- ain't you up for prom king? Look at me, scored myself a prince without trying!" she flirted.

"Really?" Linnet's face opened with her surprise, and she adjusted on the couch so she could set down her half-eaten cupcake.
Naturally, she was suprised. She didn't know much about Mim's dating life-- Linnet had come into her story half-way through. Oh, there were rumors here and there but they passed right through Linnet like the air itself. She'd been the topic of gossip before, so she knew it was best not to listen too close. It was a waste of her talent. She outta give her ears better things to catch onto.
So anyway, she thought of Mim as confident and sexy and hilarious. Who wouldn't want to go to prom with her?
"I'd never have guessed that. Well-- you deserve a date, if that's what you like!" Linnet exclaimed. "Course, you'll still have to save a dance for me."
