I will never understand why people create whole ass fantasy worlds and still oppress women in those worlds.

earlier this month it was 120 degrees in Australia , but yeah lets continue to mock those trying to save us in the 12 years we have left to slow climate change’s effects.
What is the worst thing that could happen if we listen to scientists and change our ways, and then it turns out they were lying?
Slowly dying in a mad max hell world to own the libs I guess.

My pillowfort account
I got my start as a writer on Tumblr. It let me connect with critics, readers, and other writers when I published Mutt and Stray.
I’m finally at work on my next book, and I hope you’ll all join me for the ride.
The Tumblr ban on adult content doesn’t impact my work directly--I write books for YA audiences, so I don’t expect to run up against the new rules. But I see this move as hostile to creators and fandom in general. I don’t expect the Tumblr that emerges after today (if it survives) to resemble the platform I used to love.
If you want to stay in touch, I hope you’ll consider joining @pillowfort-io. The platform is in its infancy, but seems community-focused and plans to monetize by optional subscriptions rather than ads so that focus isn’t undermined. You can find me at pillowfort.io/evanfuller.
I guess I’ll also have to start using Twitter again (ugh) and you can find that at twitter.com/equinoxfires.
Thanks to everyone who has reviewed my books, given me feedback, and helped me grow as a writer on Tumblr. I’m still in the early stages of writing this new book, but I can’t wait to share it with you!

First thousand words!
This shows my daily average at 538 because I worked past midnight, but I'm super happy I got my first thousand words out in one sitting. It's not my tightest prose, but I'm abiding by the principle of "write shitty first drafts" to try to make this thing happen. There's always time to edit later!

Notebook.ai / Getting Ready for NaNo
For the past 5 years, I’ve been working at a startup I founded. It has consumed my life, and this year, I made the tough decision to walk away. This means a lot of huge changes, and one is that I have the time and energy to start writing fiction again. This year for NaNo, I’m beginning what will become my first novel since Stray released in 2013.
My partner just sent me Notebook.ai, and it looks like the worldbuilding tool I’ve been wanting forever: a place to organize all my characters, locations, events, items, and lore. If you’ve used it, what do you think? Do you recommend it, or is there another tool you like better?
I’m also looking for as many good character dossiers as I can find, specifically those suited to science fiction and fantasy worlds.
After my wedding at the end of September, I’m planning to outline this book in October, get my 50,000 words for NaNo written in November, and finish the draft by January 15th. I can’t wait to begin.

Prose Protip #116: Write your query letter first.
At my startup, we have a software development workflow that goes something like this: Create a flowchart that shows how the user will interact with the app, write documentation describing how the app works, write tests to evaluate whether the app is working, and finally develop the app itself.
As I look toward NaNoWriMo and the hope of finally making some headway on my next novel, I’m going to try to mirror that workflow in the context of fiction. First I’ll write the query letter and back-of-cover copy that cofounded me back when I was trying to find an agent for Mutt. Then I’ll write my short and long plot descriptions, which will do double duty as an outline for the book. After that, I’ll do character dossiers and all the other typically novel prep prior to writing the first proper sentence on Nov. 1.
We’ll see if it backfires!

Suggest books for my reading list!
I’m finally planning my next novel, and I’m trying to get reacquainted with YA fiction after a few years away. I’m looking for smart YA books (bonus points for science fiction and fantasy) that deal with:
-queer/trans characters
-first sexual experiences
-faith and doubt
-growing up in religious institutions (particularly Christianity)
-intimate partner violence
-recovering from trauma
-colonialism / relationships between colonized and colonizing groups
-growing up in indigenous society
The story I’m developing blends fantasy and science fiction elements, and one thing I’m trying to decide is whether the era should be medieval/industrial (more fantasy-ish) or far future (blatant sci fi). The book will be set in a pre-industrial culture, so the tech level of the colonizing group can go either way without impacting the plot too much.
Recommendations and general feedback are welcome. Reblog or hit my inbox--thanks in advance!

epiphany
for National Poetry Month
and you realized that everyone
was a whole person
depths as deep as your depths
and from that day on
you would stop sometimes
watching them and
marveling at their wholeness
and trying to capture
that feeling in words

Okay guys this is kinda important. GQ just came in the mail and for the first time in a long while it had a really important article…
I just sat here for like the last half hour reading this and I’m incredibly appalled at our justice system in regards to the military. The article interviews about 23 men who have all been sexually assaulted in some branch of the military. The PTSD from sexual assault in the military is more prevalent than PTSD from combat…
If you have a chance I suggest reading this article…and the title is a quote that one of the victims Doctor told him…

one song
The cassette was dead by the time we fell in love so we scrawled “mixtape” in Sharpie on CD-Rs. Each was an essay on emotional intelligence whose thesis was the same: Here are these parts of me the word roots that show we share a common tongue— enough, with time, to learn the language of your thoughts. What these lacked in labor value, in hours spent  recording and rewinding, we made up by meticulously writing lyrics on receipt paper on the midnight shift.
I can admit it: most of my music was shit back then. When our children (ours in the general sense, as we have agreed never to procreate) fall in love they will look upon their playlists, and despair for Spotify Discover knows the heart of the lover better than they. So the cleverest will compose composers, craft artificial emotional intelligence machines to synthesize an unheard-of sound sprinting melodically toward the singularity an arms race to discover the loveliest song something irresistible, something bespoke.

mass
7/30 for National Poetry Month
He was survived by his wife; buried next to his roommate of fifteen years. The same plot. Everyone suspects. We’re solemn but unsad; when mind and body are past use we call death a mercy. We celebrate life; we knew so little of his. The night before the service I sit mosquito- eaten by the koi pond, staring into night, five-dollar headphones replaying the same song: Our misguided arrow words don’t mean a thing, so by now I think it’s pretty obvious there’s no god, and there’s definitely a god. You ask if you may lay on hands to pray for healing; for the last time, I say I don’t mind. My joints ache harder, anticipating a blow.  He is blessed at a Catholic mass;  He is blessed at a megachurch funeral; His condition is the same. And I have been praying to the ceiling, to stay the hand that holds me like a spider over the pit, making bargains with silence and at last falling silent. The Reverend tells us we can be assured of his salvation. I take up my pall and follow him. We lower him into the hole where his partner lies, shoveling until the casket is covered, so much carbon, so much leftover mass.
