I keep seeing comments on things about the upcoming series of Taskmaster specifically about Rosie Jones.
They all mention her specifically as the reason this season will fail.. and yet the season isn't even out yet.
Lets face it. They are ableist comments about a disabled woman.
You just don't like her because she has a disability and so you feel the need to voice your hatred of the disabled community loudly.
I'm personally not a fan of most of Rosie's comedy but I can't wait to see what she does in Taskmaster. It's a show that reveals people I've never heard of or don't particularly like have have shone them in a different light.
She's also not going to change the dynamic too much. Yes, they might have to accommodate her needs but that's up to Taskmaster to do well, not Rosie. Anyone deserves those accommodations and a show like Taskmaster is able to provide them because it's a good show.
I think at first I was reluctant to give Rosie's comedy a go because of my own internalised ableism.
I think it was very easy for me to say to myself "Well I can't understand what she's saying so this episode is too hard to watch."
I've quickly corrected myself to think "Well if I actually listen, I can understand her just fine. She's actually not difficult to understand, it was my unwillingness to even try which let me disregard her comedy in an instance which isn't fair.'
I've watched a bunch of her stuff now and it's just not my cup of tea. It's not bad but it's just not personally my thing but it's plenty of other peoples.
Rosie is often loud, obnoxious, rude, blunt. I think that's really cool because a lot of disabled people never get to be any of those things especially not so proudly in a public platform.
Disability pride is just being ourselves wholeheartedly.
That's what Rosie is doing so doing well. It's not going to be everyone's thing and it doesn't need to be. She doesn't owe you anything.
Even so, it's very cool to see her doing it.
