Ren's king characters feel out-of-place, and that's because he's honestly kind. He desperately wants to protect the people he loves, and he knows that will always end with his death. He will die in service or he will be killed for the act of ruling. Regardless of his actions as a king, he will be killed for being one, and no good knight will die before their leader. Ren goes back to the altar as many times as the world allows him. He would rather die a hero than to live and be remembered the way he remembers Impulse. He will not be seen as unfaithful.

He will drag Martyn's body to the end of the game because he did not fail him. He did not let his one friend, his only ally, die because he couldn't get there in time. It's not like him, right? He doesn't do that... right?

The tragic, dramatic irony of everyone cheering Ren on on his last session. Bdubs telling him to get meaner and to take at least four hearts of damage from people he meets; Etho offering to help him with end crystal traps; Impulse, Scar, Bdubs, and Scott encouraging him to go ahead with the villie-storage-trap despite his hesitation; Skizz and Cleo giving him invis potions and offering to get him lava buckets; Martyn distracting people so Ren can do it without trouble — all of this only for him to die on the very mission they sent him on.

In the very VERY wise words of @aniisol (hope you don’t mind me tagging you):

“Trying to change Ren into something crueler was what killed him, not the other way around. Being anything other than kind will always bring him to ruin and he’s stuck in a world where he has no choice but to be cruel.”
