im not sure if youre going off the actual wording in the caption in the image or the original japanese (in the latter case ignore me), but the caption actually implies the opposite to me. ive talked with others about it and they agree too.

vasily is famous and it says he "refused to part with", therefore this painting is commonly known to exist before he dies, since hes refusing to give it away to anyone. additionally if he actually did die in 1940 it wouldnt make sense for it then to be sold at auction to an IT company. computers didnt exist yet.

the everydayheroes scan is a more accurate translation and still i dont think it implies anything different to the vizmedia one. to me the insinuation is still that people knew he had the painting, he refused to sell it, and then when he died it was auctioned and the it company bought it, which couldnt have happened in 1940. also, the dating would more likely be an estimation of when he painted it, not when he died.
