Libyan traditional horse riding at a wedding in Janzor city west in Tripoli, Libya. From western Libya, horsemen come from different cities and towns, wearing traditional Libyan clothes to ride their horses in groups. Each group must be from the same city or town trying to ride in one line with same speed in perfect harmony and symmetry. The line is a mix of young and old riders with a leader who is usually the oldest and has more experience in horse riding. This event , however, cannot be done at all Libyan weddings. This is due to the cost, accommodation and of course the cost of providing food and such amenities by the host. Sometimes, these riders could even stay for three days! Also, during this event, there must be a wide space for the riders and spectators. 📸Photos by Abdurrauf Ben Madi, November 2020

Today for #shoutoutsunday, we feature some of the work that our partners @worldpressphoto showed on their Instagram feed last week from the African Photojournalism Database (APJD). ---- 'Inside' by Morrocan photographer Btihal Remlin (@btihal_remli). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ "This project deals with the meaning of immaterial spaces. Spaces that can be created and transformed by (Islamic) rituals. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thinking about religion in general, you always have an image in mind of gorgeous sacred buildings. But with Islam it is different. Instead of seeing Muslim communities praying in great mosques you see them in shops, storehouses, sports halls, or even parking spots. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But even though they practice their belief in secular places, they are still able to transform those into sacred worlds. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In this project I am telling the story of my journey in Oujda, Morocco, where the daily life is structured by those rituals. Prayers are performed in the middle of a marketplace. Where there is no water a stone is being used to symbolize the lavation. The complete environment is transformed. Immaterial spaces emerges that neither have walls or roofs. Spaces that are invisible but have a sensible presence."⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ---- The APJD, a joint initiative of World Press Photo Foundation and Everyday Africa, is a database of emerging and professional African visual journalists and works to promote a diverse representation of the African continent. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For more information, visit APJD on @blinkdotla at blink.la/organizations/apjd or go to apjd.org to learn about the submission process. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #africanphotojournalists #africa #everydayafrica #morocco
