"Stuck in the timeloop as a punishment" is cool and all, but stuck in the timeloop voluntarily though? Oh, brother. Stuck in the timeloop cause you just can't move on. Stuck in the timeloop even if you know that it's not real and whatever should've happen already did. Stuck in the timeloop even if doesn't makes you happy. You just can't bear the thought of not being able to see them ever again. Stuck in the timeloop even if you know you should move on. Stuck in the timeloop even if you know they would want you to move on.
But maybe just a little while longer.

My favourite thing about Li Chengyin is how, even though he's indisputably a huge asshole and a cruel ruler and person, he didn't start out that way. The start of the show has him being just as willful, playful, and innocently childish and selfish the same way that Xiaofeng is.
Even in the Danchi arc, it's clear that he still very much had his humanity... he tried really hard to bring Xiaofeng away before the invasion because he knew that although the Danchi massacre would obviously fuck her up, her witnessing it firsthand was infinitely worse. During the first wedding, he clearly was extremely worried FOR her and her entire family and was guilty the whole while.
But by the end of the story, he has a completely different attitude towards human suffering. He sees Xiaofeng in love and decides that the best thing to do would be to kill her love, with his own hands, in front of her. "Don't you look away!" was the most unhinged thing to ever say to someone you supposedly love. He would much rather Xiaofeng be miserable with him, to be in much more pain than he is, than to leave things be. What a madman. Li Chengyin at the start of the journey would never have done that. The person that Sese and Xiaofeng fell in love with would not have done that.
#goodbye my princess#and i have so many thought about how this ties in w the central theme about how royal politics screwed over everyone in the family#the 2nd prince the empress the emperor and finally li chengyin...#the 2nd prince and empress were baited into killing someone they loved and then were blamed for it#and the emperor and li chengyin lost their humanity and caused the people they loved to kill themselves#bc when someone this ruthless says they love you. they arent promising to protect you in any way that actually matters#when the empress dowager and li chengyin told the emperor that 'you made me/the 2nd prince this way!'#hahaha.... the parallels... the 1st villain and also the last standing villain (li chengyin himself)... hahaha#i love li chengyin hes so fucked up#live long enough to see yourself become the villain kind of vibes#(bc becoming like a villain was the only way he knew how to survive)#(if he stayed the same he surely would have died)#(but also how much had he given up in the process? how much of himself is left?#he can finally be truthful to xiaofeng... but whatever for? whatever they have now is just ashes)#edit: I FORGOT ABOUT SESE#i loooove love how she starts off all endearing and polite and all#and then eventually becomes more and more ruthless and despicable#and you can see why she turned out this way and why she started thinking that everyone was out to get her#even after the one person who truly had it out for her (the empress) was gone#she in fact only became more paranoid

i. i just realised. the reason Li Chengyin believes that Xiaofeng evaded death is because she's done it before. The last time he had seen her, she had jumped down from a fatal height. No one saw that she had in fact lived, because their crown prince had just spit out blood and fainted so no one was looking over the wall at the moment when she should have hit the ground but did not. He thought she had died, and then she didn't. He had surely despaired and mourned for her, then she appeared completely unharmed and without even a broken bone.
