Episode 9 opening with Seth sitting on his and Jared's couch singing and playing 'If the House Burns Down Tonight' is so on the nose it would be ridiculous, except that it being so on the nose is what makes it perfect.

And he stops, and looks around at everything he owns, but it doesn't matter because his brother isn't there, and then JARED is the one who saves SETH from the fire, because the truth is that he loves his brother, no matter how hurt or lost he feels.

Also that song getting brought back on the stereo in the Season 5 premiere, is fire.

Holding you and the wheel it occurs to me

And if the house burns down tonight

I got everything I need when I got you by my side

And Seth looks over at Jared singing horribly off key, and grins cause he loves him so dang much and it's like this is the dream.

Music is such a big part of this show, but how about the significance of literally everything starting off with Switchfoot's "Who We Are", a song about what it was like being a kid and being sure of your identity, but then recognizing how you become who you are because of everything you go though, and that there's "still time enough to choose" who you are going to be?? Like it's such a perfect example of how innocent everything feels at the start, ESPCIALLY for Jared, before his entire identity gets shattered, before he finds out he's not even human, when he's just a university freshman living with his big brother and making the girl he likes laugh.

That first episode opening with the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 / 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... in the black, and Jared opening his eyes to "we were just kids", but he smiles, and rolls over sleepy, listening to the shower running and the music coming through the walls, happy because he wakes to this sound every morning, his brother is home safe and sound, there's nowhere he'd rather be right then. Mhmmmmmmmm

Music

Seth has some pretty straightforward music tastes.

His three favourite albums are Daughtry's Break the Spell, Switchfoot's Fading West, and NEEDTOBREATHE's The Outsiders. And those are his top three artists. He knows all of their albums, and keeps copies in his truck, and has taught himself "If the House Burns Down Tonight" on the guitar. He likes alt and post-grunge rock in general, but cares a lot about lyrics and the actual content of songs. He likes some classic rock too, and has Petra on his old iPod. Yes, he has an old iPod with all his favourite music on it, and he refuses to ever give it up. He is Canadian and so is proud of his Tragically Hip and Nickleback mix-CDs.

Of course he had extensive music lessons as a kid, his parents insisted on it, but he never hated it, he did love it, and he is a pretty decent guitarist. He feels more comfortable with a guitar than a piano, he finds too much distance between him and a piano, but the guitar is right there in his arms and it feels so much easier, like the guitar is actually part of him. He will play sometimes when he and Jared are sitting on the couch in their apartment, especially if Jared is struggling with his studies and is super stressed out. The replacement guitar Jared gifts him in Season 3 is a custom 12-string Gibson, built to Seth's specs.

Dorcas likes... a little of everything honestly.

Classical and soundtracks, a little jazz, whatever her brothers are playing (except Seth listens to the same thing over and over!) When she's upset or mad she will put on some hard cinematic rock and scream along.

Country is probably her favourite genre, the one she can kind of count on to generally be something she'll like. She's a Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks fan of course, but also proud of Paul Brandt and Brett Kissel and other Canadian artists. She really takes a shine to Tenille Townes. Country music was always something she shared with her dad, and no one else in the family. (Seth does not like country music, btw.) That's why she never listens to country through the first half of Season 3.

She also becomes a BIG for King & Country fan after she becomes a Christian.

Dorcas too had all the music lessons, but she wanted to be different, so she picked percussion, and does jam casually with friends. Her favourite is the snare drum; she likes to imagine she's a doomed drummer boy on the battle field.

Jared likes a lot of the music his siblings like.

He leans harder into the emo rock though, and is a big fan of Evenescence, LINKIN PARK, and Breaking Benjamin. He was a Skillet fan before he ever knew they were Christian. He blasts STARSET with Dorcas, and likes her country music (shh, don't tell Seth), and he knows all the songs on Seth's favourite Switchfoot album. He finds Citizen Soldier after finding out he's a mutans, and listens to them a ton, he memorizes all their lyrics.

The only thing is he canNOT hold a tune, and he knows it. He doesn't usually sing, unless it's just Dorcas or Seth around. Seth will hear him belting out 'Bring Me To Life' in the shower, so badly off key it makes him wince, but then he smiles soft and sappy cause he loves his ridiculous little brother.

Have I been sitting on my bed listening to Citizen Soldier emo rock and rotating Sam Winchester and Jared Giovinazzo in my head for over an hour now? Uh, yeah, yeah I have.

Jewelry

Seth wears no jewelry, mostly because of his job as a paramedic. If he got married, he would get a ring tattoo.

Jared likes wearing a lot of corded or leather jewelry, with one or two exceptions.

He wears a stack of corded or leather bracelets on each wrist, four on the left and five on the right. These have been gifts or fun purchases, and he doesn't care very much about colour coordination. One of the braided ones is like the one on the right, in the colours of the Italian flag. (They joke that they are 'barely' Italian, but their last name is pretty distinctive.) He has one beaded bracelet, in blue and black beads with swirly white patterns on them; Dorcas made it for him as a 7th birthday present, and he has kept it and gotten it expanded. A sage green braided bracelet was a gift from Ashleigh. Even after she breaks up with him, he keeps the bracelet.

He also has this silver bracelet, with a North Star symbol on it. It was a gift from his parents on hus 16th birthday. "The North Star will always show you the way home."

Jared wears two necklaces. A silver dollar on a cord like on the left, but the hole is round, and off centre, since he drilled it himself. It was a silver dollar he found in the mud by the river when he was about 10. He also wears a single dog tag which was a gift from Seth when Seth went away to college—it has CHOSEN engraved on one side, and FOREVER engraved on the other.

Last but not least, he wears this resin ring on his right ring finger. It was a gift from Dorcas for 'no reason'. Honestly she just saw it in a display and thought he would love it, and she was right. She gave it to him the spring before he graduated high school.

Dorcas also likes to wear jewelry.

She always wears four or five necklaces at once, and has over a hundred that she cycles through. All kinds: corded, pendant, beaded, gold, cheap stainless steel. Lots of gifts, but also lots she just buys cause she likes them.

The one she always wears though is a tiny blood vial, of mixed blood from Seth, Jared, and her, as a reminder of her responsibilities and the bond she shares with her brothers.

She also has a bunch of little rings, mostly silver. She doesn't like stones, or anything that stands up from the band, because it tends to catch on things. She usually wears rings on all her fingers, but not her thumbs.

She hates bracelets, btw. The closest thing she wears to a bracelet, is a hairtie.

But she also loves hair pins and clips! Especially anything fantasy or sword related. She has five different sword hair pins, and has absolutely practiced whipping them out and throwing them, so that she is a pretty decent aim. :)))

Tattoos

Seth has several tattoos, though they're all smaller and pretty discreet.

He has a small cross tattoo on his left wrist, but it's the 'three nails' cross on the right.

He has the Star of Life paramedic symbol on the ball of his shoulder, and it's about four inches high.

He has three seagulls on the inside of his left forearm, two for his parents, and one for the little brother they never got to know. And he has an orchid going down the outside of his left bicep, which is for Dorcas, cause orchids are her favourite flower.

And he has this skate-lace tattoo, but it's wrapped around his upper bicep on his right arm, and forms a band that is half filled in with the symbols of every hockey team he's ever played for.

And he has this tiny star on his right ankle, because a little girl he couldn't save had a bunch of temporary star tattoos around her ankle.

Jared is the only other one with a tattoo, and he gets his after he comes back to his family in Season 2.

He gets this tattooed around his right side, just under his bottom rib, and it's in Seth's handwriting, about an inch tall. Of course, being adopted, and having had his life saved by his siblings' blood, he means it in the original form, as a contraction of 'The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb'.

Jared also gets one of these cross/semi colon tattoos in Season 4, after he becomes a Christian. His is maybe two inches high, and on the inside of his left wrist.

"I did it for you" has gotta be my favorite form of betrayal. You gave me a gift I never asked for, and now I have to look around at the world you destroyed with the knowledge that it was gift wrapped and addressed to me.
