Grambling State’s Jimmy Jones recorded five 15/4/5 seasons in his ABA career, with the 1968-69 campaign of 26.6ppg (on 53.5% from the field!!!), 5.7rpg and 5.7apg being the highlight year. Dr. J is the next closest player with only three seasons. For that reason Jimmy Jones is lurking somewhere in so many of ABA’s top20’s for a particular stat. And, here’s the best one – he’s first all-time in offensive win shares for his ABA career, per Basketball-Reference. Of course, he also had to be the one to spread the ball around in this Supergame. Also, look for that cool stutter step that he does in this game.

Per Jim O’Brien’s 1972-73 Complete Handbook of Pro Basketball, Jones went with the New Orleans Buccaneers since the Bullets — the team that drafted him in the NBA — also had picked Earl Monroe. The book also says that “Bullets Coach Gene Shue seemed higher on Jones in later years than he was on Monroe”.

One heck of a player, who probably would have more of a legacy if some form of the Buccaneers would exist nowadays. An ABA title also would helped. But Connie Hawkins took care of that in 1967-68 and then New Orleans’ management traded away Larry Brown and Doug Moe, who of course won it all with the Oakland Oaks the next year.
