More thoughts under the cut (spoilers up to Fool's Fate):

The first time I got to this chapter, I felt so physically tense that I had to put the book down and pace for a little while. Being stuck in Fitz's head, seeing him spiral and being unable to do anything to stop him from brutalizing that boy, the only option to continue reading and to be a witness to him sinking deeper and deeper into his own head, to the point of channeling his anger and shame into the horrible thought that to be free of it all, to be the only one holding onto his own secrets, he should get rid of everyone who's seen even but a fragment of him; and lastly, most of all, "[his] Fool", the one who'd known him from the inside out.

It's one of The Lines for me, especially since it happens in the same book as Fitz himself having to resist the temptation to sweep into the Fool's mind and know all of him, punctuating it with "It was a shameful hunger to feel. [...] How could I forgive him for making me feel it?" Fitz's warped attitude towards personal boundaries has always played a major role in his relationships but I find it especially intense and interesting here. It also feels like a prelude to Fitz's desperate resurrection of Beloved in Fool's Fate: "I can't let you live in a world where I'd see my faults and your judgement looking at me from your eyes" -> "I can't let myself live in a world without you, so I will be you and you will be me, looking through each other's eyes, mind and heart and all".

I've been reading some

to me the murderbot books and the tv show are still two separate things (which is good - the tv show is an adaptation, it doesn't have to recreate the books exactly nor should it) but I'm getting a kick out of how being able to SEE SecUnit's face recontextualizes things.

like. in the books the PresAux crew treats SecUnit like a person because they are A) nice in general and B) ethical

in the show the PresAux crew is still A) nice in general and B) ethical, but they're also C) fairly certain their SecUnit is a person because every time they talk to it directly it looks like it's going to throw up
