Classical Themic vocab #4: 'Tis better to have loved and lost

We all have loved ones.

ćérij, v.: (trans.) love

Etymology: PT *ak'arija "love"

ćerijé, n. (*-ē): (1) (the concept of) love (2) (adj.) beloved; (n.) friend, partner, (obsolete, poetic or ironic) spouse

Etymology: PT *ak'arija-hi "that which is loved" > PreCT *ecerijé

Whoever has loved ones will need to bury them.

rémena, v.: bury

Etymology: CT réme "grave" + na "make"

NB: réme "grave" is literally "place of death". The Themic peoples, living in the woods and with the decay that befell life the moment it ended, buried their dead on the very day and in the very place they died. If the body of a person was moved afterwards (mostly in other cultures or mythology) both the place they died and the place they were moved to were referred to as their remešý.

Example: hiÿ remenám méwa ćerijé "Here, I buried my loved one" (here bury.1SG my love)

And to finish on a more lighthearted note:

Bi-daily(lol) conlang report #2: some pronouns, ejectives and baby's first verbal morphology

Didn't get quite a lot done the past days, so here's a few small changes/additions I got around to:

We have (Protolang) ejectives now. I really wanted all of /k,kʰ,c,cʰ/ to be phonemic, but as it turns out my current sound changes caused plain c to become ɟ to become j in all contexts, so i inserted an ejective series /p',t',k'/ in Proto-Themic that only has the job to prevent voicing of some /k/s.

Pronouns: I'm thinking ergative "it"/"that" (with no number distinction) and accusative animate pronouns. I have the following set of demonstratives derived:

I love how the perfect (read: incomprehensible) regularity in Proto-Themic animate demonstratives (subject *VCVs, object *Vap'i) leads to irregularity in the modern lang when initial s gets lost: chu > chepí, but not sa > **sepí but ep��

(Side note: I thought at first that third person pronouns

I don't know yet whether/how I'm going to distinguish demonstrative vs personal pronouns. I might go spanish-style with "lax" (cf. le, la, lo) demonstratives and "emphatic" (cf. lé, ella, ello) personal pronouns.

Verbs: The reason I came up with pronouns in the first place is because I wanted Ancient Egyptian-y suffix pronouns. So, without further ado, two complete sentences:

"was pha" "he boils the goat" (boil.3SG goat)

"wach moró cu morú" "they boil cat and mice" (boil.3PL mouse.PL and cat.PL)

Mostly just follows IPA/common conventions. Acute accents mark stress.

So if anything, think to yourself "oh yeah, the ['jydina] do be [ky'din]."

Bi-daily(-ish. It's been more than that, also I'm back to uni and pretty occupied some days of the week) conlang report #1: noun morphology and possibly reinventing PIE ablaut

This is my first larger (historical-method) conlanging project. I will post about its speakers (and the overall con-world) soon, for now, this is just to document my progress.

I have derived nominative, ergative, genitive and instrumental cases, and ass-pulled a vocative, and then analysed them to death.

Proto-Themic was in the early stages of polysynthetic language, so just appended regular root words (most often prepositions) or shortened/unemphatic versions to the end of the stem to build cases, to wit:

Nominative (absolutive) *-⌀

Ergative *-(i)ma (This is not transparently related to any lexeme since I couldn't figure out what word that should be; also, it)

Genitive *-(i)ni "of"

Instrumental *-ka ~ *ku "with"

I then applied the following series of sound changes

and got it all terribly wrong. This is the first page of tables that I posted a few days ago.

Then I changed both the sound changes (in an attempt to save as much as possible of what I got at that point) and (hesitatingly) some of my noun forms.

This is what came from that:

As you see, I also made up a neat way of systematizing each pattern using stems. Basically, a stem is what the root becomes with each possible combination of umlauts applied, so a word may have:

a-stem bócha-

u-stem bócho-

i-stem bö́che-

ui-stem bö́chö-

Then declension becomes just a matter of selecting a stem, adding a suffix and possibly shifting stress to a different syllable - easy!

I realized at that point that 1) PIE ablaut is probably just that, a root being influenced by different umlaut patterns (not that we'd have any hope of reconstructing those) and 2) this system, with its shifting stress and imperfect vowel harmony, was distinctly Ancient Greek-y and maybe Hungarian-esque, which I really liked, considering that the end goal is to write an epic poem in this thing.

And, to end this on a more light-hearted note, this is daily Classical Themic vocab #1:

I think Amanda fully believed she and Sarek were dating for weeks or months before he realized that she thought that.

Like, Sarek is thinking he's doing SUCH a good job in Human Diplomacy, he has made A Human Friend. They do activities together, consume meals together, communicate outside of work functions in an informal fashion. Amanda makes an effort to show him Human culture and landmarks that are more likely to appeal to a Vulcan and is considerate of his different physiology in a way most Humans usually forget to be. She doesn't touch him without warning but still somehow uses body language to convey to other Humans that they are together on their activities. She gives him lots of signs of Human comfort and intimacy without pushing too hard at his Vulcan boundaries. He's Succeeding at Human socializing!

Meanwhile Amanda has like. Introduced him to her parents. Taken him to friends' weddings. Done super obvious This Is A Date activities with him, only tailored to accomodate Vulcan preferences about physical contact and emotional displays. SHE thinks she is doing So Good at Wooing The Vulcan. Sometimes he willingly touches her when they are out in public, to like, keep them from getting separated, or pull her out of the path of danger or discomfort, which as far as she knows is like Vulcan First Base.

But also she is a Human woman they have been dating for months and taking it slow for her Vulcan beau is beginning to grow...somewhat frustrating! A little! Like she enjoys spending time with him but also! She would sure like to touch him more! Maybe kiss him! She would even settle for feeling up his hands the way Vulcans do because she has gotten so preoccupied with his hands since they've been dating, she feels like a 19th century maiden, it's insane.

So she casually broaches the subject of whether or not Vulcans engage in sexual activity outside of Pon Farr (when they're having a quiet evening alone in one of their apartments, obviously, you don't have a sex talk with your very shy boyfriend in public) and Sarek is like. Well that's a very intimate topic, Amanda, why do you ask? Is there a Vulcan you are interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with?

And she's just like What.

And he's like (gently condescending) That sort of question could imply a "come-on", as you Humans would say.

And she's like I SURE HOPE IT WOULD, SAREK, MY BOYFRIEND OF SIX MONTHS, WITH WHOM I WOULD LIKE TO BE PHYSICALLY INTIMATE

And Sarek is like WHAT.

My longest post to date, but it's an important one. It's all I as an outsider have to say about the politics of the US in particular.

Dear American leftist.

So you want to make the world better. Please here me out.

You recognize that your parties are ultimately just capitalist racists/sexists/lgbt-phobes and capitalist collaborators/copagandists/war criminals. You want to tear this system to the ground (understandably), just have a revolution and build a new one, a democratic-socialist utopia.

That's not gonna happen yet.

Most Americans want to make the world better. But they will not agree with you on the means or even the end goal.

And you *can't have a revolution* without widespread support (or at least most people not being outright hostile to your end goal - the dirty word socialism). Your current representative system is going to remain for some time still. Your president will have power and they will have the largest and most dangerous power over minorities and marginalized people.

It is important who gets to wield this power.

It is important who gets to appoint the next Supreme Court justices. Even if Democrats don't really care about abortion rights and are just using it as a talking point - their appontees consistently rule in favor of women. This applies equally to race and LGBT issues, and to the legislative and executive branches.

On Palestine and lesser evils

I feel like the most important or one of the most important reasons for leftists who do not vote is the situation in Gaza and independence for Palestine and the lack of action on part of the Dems.

I will not actually talk policy here because even if you think both will do equally bad things for Palestine, you just cannot reason that this means both parties are equal or equally bad. Let me draw you a table (tumblr doesn't have tables?):

How the fuck is there no lesser evil here?

If you do not vote for Dems for the sake of your conscience, you are either a coward who is too immature to make hard decisions or you plain *do not care* for LGBT people, women, PoC, or immigrants.

(Footnote: Dems wont solve your existing racism problems. But people will suffer due to government inaction rather than government WANTING them to suffer and actively using its resources to create more suffering)

You're the guy in the trolley problem NOT pulling the lever to save four lives. Sure, it would be PREFERRABLE if there were no PEOPLE TIED TO THE TRACKS. But they are right now and the state of being tied to a track is called marginalization.

Voting third party does not help.

Your system is rigged against you to allow only two parties.

By not voting, or voting third party, you are saving no one (except your own conscience, selfishly). Vote and then do some more actually useful stuff.

How the fuck does voting impact your ability to organize politically in other ways? Do you think low voter turnout will somehow convince both Reps and Dems that actually, they're both illegitimate and willing to give way to a new system now? Obviously not?!
