“Of course. I wouldn’t have let any of you go through with this alone.” she returned with a reassuring smile of her own as Melissa closed the door after Monica. “Under different circumstances, it does have its charm.” Melissa looked around, touching the dusty surface of the furniture as they passed. Making their way over to an old bed, which was hardly prepared for the upcoming home birth procedure.

She would still have to change that before Dana went into labor, Missy thought to herself.

The older Scully had to admit, that she agreed with her sister on choosing a hospital over this setup. Though they were lucky enough, that Melissa had taken a midwife class in her twenties when she was flying under the family radar. Having taught Monica one or two things over the past couple of days so she could help when it was time since she never fully physically recovered from what happened six years ago.

"How are you feeling, Dana?" Missy brushed off the dusty hand on her skirt before touching her sister's shoulder after the younger of them sat down.

This wasn't how she'd imagined any of this; people after her, after her unborn baby, driving out into the middle of nowhere, allowing the location to be chosen by Monica's 'feelings' about the place, with Mulder miles away, not even with her. She'd imagined a hospital, something clinical and clean; instead she had two well-meaning, spiritually inclined women who both tended to base their decisions on feelings more than facts.

But at least one was a fellow FBI agent, and the other was her family.

"Thanks for agreeing to come along, Missy," she told her sister warmly while Monica went to look for something resembling clean running water. "You've already done more than enough throughout this whole thing..." Especially when Mulder was taken, when she'd been putting all her energies into getting him back, and her sister had been one of the only people there to remind her to take care of herself as well. Also, she'd been a much needed buffer between Dana and her mother's well-intentioned interference. "And I know this place isn't exactly cosy..." She emphasised the point by brushing away a clump of cobwebs. "But I do need you here."

"Then stop thinking about it. This is your choice of what you want to do with your life, Dana. Not ours or anybody else's, and especially not his. Dad has made his own choice, just as much as Billy, to follow in someone's footsteps. We don't know if it was the right one or if they have regret making it."

Though at least partially, Melissa knew that their brother felt pressured to join the Navy as their firstborn and that he was trying his hardest not to repeat their father's mistakes.

Melissa reached out and gave his sister's hand a gentle squeeze. "It's not me you have to convince on the matter. In fact, you don't have to convince or need anyone's support on this but yourselves. Do you want to take this next step in your life or not?"

Dana nodded, smiling a little at how easily her sister managed to take her observation and change it into something philosophical, an observation on the human race as a whole. "Well, I can't argue with that," she agreed, still smiling.

But it faltered, fading a little, when Melissa brought up the topic that was plaguing her so much it was the exact reason she'd needed the caffeine in her coffee more than usual.

"Well, it's more when than if now," she admitted. After her last chat with Missy, she'd made her mind up about joining the FBI rather than practising medicine. She even felt excited about it, that she was making the right decision...until she remembered she was going to have to announce it to more than just her sister at some point.

"I just feel I could make a real difference at the FBI. But the moment I think about telling Dad, all I can feel is that I'm going to disappoint him, and everything else goes out the window."
