Sometimes with soup, it’s difficult to see all of the different ingredients hiding inside. You just have to have faith that whatever comes up on your spoon through the murky depths will taste great! This card may come up when we are encouraged to have faith in something or someone (ourselves, even) who we cannot see or has not been “proved” yet.

Knives are used in ceremonies and magical workings all over the world. Its cutting edge creates a powerful symbol for the work we are attempting to do emotionally, energetically, spiritually. Magic happens beneath the light of The Moon—where is the magic in your life? What sort of magic do you want to make? A knife can cut our food into edible pieces, but it can also draw our own blood if mishandled (or used aggressively). This card may be a warning. The power of a tool lies in the hand that wields it. How are you wielding your knife? Carefully, carelessly? In peace, or in anger? “Is it cake?” asks a popular television show, in which hyperrealistic cakes are pitted against nearly identical, non-cake objects; the reveal comes when the knife slices through. Sometimes things are not what they seem. The flash of the knife blade may trick you in the dim light of The Moon; be wary of illusions, tricks, and mirages. Sometimes these tricks are played on us by outside forces, but they can also come from within.

▪ Metamorphosis ▪ Rebirth ▪ Endings ▪ Release Through natural microbes, salt, sugar, vinegar, and metabolic processes, fresh foodstuff is transformed into completely new edible wonders. This card comes up to indicate periods of metamorphosis; not little changes, but huge, life-altering ones, often happening deep within ourselves. Fermentation and pickling are often used to give new life to foods that are otherwise too far gone to eat, or are inedible in their raw state. Who will you be when you emerge from your fermenting jar? What new life have you been granted where there was only difficulty or rot? Once it’s been transformed, we no longer call a pickle a cucumber. In order to gain its new identity, it has ceased being what it once was. In order to create something new, something else may first need to be destroyed. What endings are you currently facing, and how do you feel about them? One of the major methods of fermentation is the release of gases, particularly carbon dioxide, by the microbes driving the changes inside the food. It’s this that makes fermented drinks fizzy and creates bubbles in our sourdough bread. What might you need to release in your life right now in order to make for a better future? What has been digested that now needs to be excreted from the body, to make room for something new?
