Over 100 years ago, French physiologist Charles Richet showed how injection with foreign (but non-toxic) proteins caused animals to have violent (often fatal) allergic reactions to the second injection.
About 100 years later, Japanese researchers found a link between gelatin-containing DTAP injections given during infancy and a sudden outbreak of gelatin allergies in Japan during the 1980's and 90's (Hat Tip: Heather Fraser).
