Through the online glass: Information is free, but insight is profitable
In today’s world, the Internet has become a basic necessity. It seems bizarre to imagine living without the Internet at our fingertips. We have the luxury of using the online universe to find out about absolutely anything.
If you belong to Gen Z, it is far more baffling to picture a world without the glorious ease of “googling” whatever we don’t know. There exists a plethora of platforms that we can access for free. It is fairly easy to get free content online, however, have you stopped to think about the value of free content? The Internet is filled with an excess of information that we don’t really need. For example, if we happen to stumble upon an interesting piece of news online, we end up falling down the rabbit hole and coming across a variety of news and information that is not important or beneficial to know. Reading about a scandalous rumour surrounding a celebrity may be entertaining but at the end of the day, it boils down to wasting precious time on pure gossip. It does not provide us with any value whatsoever. Free content can be exciting and may even feel like a better option than paying for content, however, this glorified image of free online content is simply a facade.
It is important to dive into why paying for content is totally worth it. Have you ever felt like there is too much to see and you don’t have enough time on your hands? This is a common affair when it comes to free online content. An overload of information can be rather overwhelming and often, we consume a ton of pointless content instead of finding exactly what we were looking for. We may not realize it but free content does come with a price that is of utmost concern - our privacy. A 2017 study revealed that 92% consumers are concerned about the risks to their privacy that come with personalized ads. It was also suspected that young individuals were less concerned about their privacy than older consumers.
Most websites are funded by ads that we see as soon as we visit them. Nearly every website attaches tracking cookies to a visitor’s IP address for the purpose of targeted ads. It isn’t surprising to find that consumers dislike viewing ads that pop up one after the other or get clustered on their screen in the midst of reading an article, watching a video or doing anything online for that matter, on top of which they have to be wary of the added risk of jeopardizing their privacy and security. When we pay for content, we can rest assured that what we get in return is of value and worth every penny. There are a multitude of reasons behind why paying for content is a great deal, starting with an upgraded user experience. You may think that viewing free content is what’s convenient. Try thinking from a different perspective. According to research, 44% of people pay for premium content services because it is convenient. All of the content that one requires is present under a single roof. If you choose not to pay, you’re left with the option of investing more time and effort in searching for and curating the content that you need. Paying for exclusive content simply frees you of the hassles of looking through multiple results that pop up during your search. Ultimately, what can be understood is that free content is not all fun and games. It presents its own set of issues such as lack of privacy, poor user experience and wastage of time.
Paying for content not just ensures that the user gets value for money but also makes the user value the content far more than content that is available for free. It is human nature to value something that you are paying for. Besides this, accessing content behind a paywall gives you the chance to view insightful and in-depth content which would benefit you in moreways than one. Peering into tech-savvy times: The top 5 Media Websites in India
With the advent of digital technology, methods of media consumption have evolved. Newspapers, radio and television are no longer the primary sources of news, information and entertainment. The internet has changed the face of the media in today’s world. A few quick clicks directs us to a sleek website that contains more information than we require and we’re instantly drawn in by the eye-catching headlines, images, graphics and videos. When people view a piece of news or information online, they are able to share it with other people or voice their thoughts by leaving comments. This makes online media platforms far more interactive in nature in comparison to traditional media platforms. If you’re a fan of browsing the net for news and information, you may not be a newcomer when it comes to the following websites.
Here are the top 5 media websites in India
Indiatimes.com is the flagship brand of Times Internet. It is an online newsroom that provides articles, stories and videos on an extensive range of topics such as entertainment, lifestyle, politics, sports, business, technology, health and culture. The platform prides itself on being consumer centric rather than consumer driven in today’s sponsorship-based digital world. Indiatimes.com strives to bring content that is accurate, neutral, relevant, provoking, loud and vibrant.
NDTV:Known to be India’s top destination for general news, NDTV.com is one of the most popular and visited news websites in India. New Delhi Television or NDTV spearheaded India’s news television and is presently an internet company of which NDTV.com is the flagship website that pioneers digital journalism. The website hit a record of 13 billion hits in one day on the day of the Lok Sabha (Parliament) Election results in 2014. Aiming for credible, accurate and fast news, the company’s work has a major reach and works towards campaigning for and with the people of India.
Rediff.com began in 1996 as two properties - rediff.co.in and rediffindia.com. Gradually, it evolved into what we see as the staple of Indian netizens that strives to provide world-class online consumer service. It emerged during a time when newspapers did not have their own websites and grew to be extremely popular as the primary source of regular news updates. Known to be the very first website domain name registered in India, Rediff.com is an online portal that offers news, entertainment, information and shopping. Its visitors hail from India, the United States and Japan. Besides covering editorials, interviews and opinion articles, theportal also offers a Get Ahead section that features movie reviews, live cricket scores and more, targeting the younger generation.
Storypick:Storypick is an independent digital media company that was founded by two individuals who belonged to the IT domain. Having acquired 5.6 million unique visitors in May 2014, Storypick strives to provide stories that are powerful, inspirational, thrilling, educational and entertaining. This platform focuses on a “0% noise” policy that ensures that visitors don’t have to look through an overload of information and content on online media while they’re at Storypick.
The Quint:The Quint is the ideal platform for those who have an ardent interest in politics. Driven by a passion for never missing out on news, The Quint works towards satiating news-hungry millennials and delves into reporting with an unbiased eye. Offering content in both English and Hindi for the younger generation, the platform was included in NewsWhip’s biggest Facebook publishers in April 2016. It also partnered with Bloomberg in 2016 for a venture called BloombergQuint that covers broadcast, digital and live events across India.
ScoopWhoop: ScoopWhoop is a New Delhi-based Buzzfeed-inspired digital media platform that has an audience of over 30 million a month. 70% of its audience ranges between the ages of 16 and 30. Launched by five co-workers who were all giant fans of Buzzfeed, this platform gets millions of views every month. It focuses on themes that are typically “desi” and focus on the Indian youth. This is, essentially, what sets them aside from the American internet media company and gets their target audience to connect with their content. Following a year since its launch, ScoopWhoop became largely successful for their humorous listicles, GIFs and videos, however, the label that stuck to the popular platform is “Buzzfeed’s India clone”.
The Internet is a fun place to explore and one can come across a variety of exciting, unique or plain bizarre information. However, too much information can be overwhelming. Not knowing whether the content is clickbait or legitimate can frequently occur when you are browsing the online world. It is never too late to start focusing on content that is worthwhile and valuable. Follow EXTRA! INSIGHTS for the best curated content!
