she's gotten used to looking over her shoulder, ever since santa barbara it's been impossible to not be really fucking tense. lev jokes that the only time she smiles is when she's around him, and even then she knows it doesn't reach her eyes. finding the fireflies had helped some, until they'd decided to come here. everyone knows who she is, she's fairly certain of that, or maybe it's just paranoia. her braid's long gone, and the short hair that's left is choppy and not even remotely ... her.

tension only increases when she catches sight of someone she's actually positive is aware of her identity. that scar is because of her, he's got one eye because of her. collateral damage ... that's how she's tried to play it off in her head, she'd only been protecting herself ... but that's harder to justify now that she's here. he hadn't done anything. he hadn't been a part of the slaughter of all of her friends.

hands clench into fists at her sides before arms cross over her chest. everyone keeps insisting she's safe here, that they're safe here, but it's impossible to let the weight of everything that's happened drop. it gets to her, even if she won't apologize for the fact that she'd come seeking revenge in the first place.

"me?" the question's guarded but undoubtedly incredulous. she expects vitriol or bitterness or ... something more akin to what ellie has consistently displayed. welcoming sure isn't on the list. it's enough to prompt a question that slips out before she can stop it. "no one else seems to trust me, why do you?"

he hadn't known who she was, at first; not until dina had said it. knowing it doesn't change much; you only have to look at her weary gaze to know that she isn't here to hurt anyone. he wonders what ellie would think, but she isn't around jackson much, these days, and when she is, she seldom has much to say. guilt, maybe.

the woman, abby, had taken his eye and left him with permanent scarring, but to resent her will do none of them any good. they have to co-exist now, and that means finding a way to make it work. so he does. " we could use you on patrols down the line, if you're interested. " he watches her face for a flicker, a reaction, and sees nothing he doesn't like. " i know you need more time to settle in first, get your strength back. just putting feelers out there. " @exwlf, plotted starter!

contrary to popular belief , the last thing ellie wanted in this moment was a fight.      somehow the stamina she’d exerted back in santa barbara had yet to return , leaving the shell of who ellie once was exhausted in every sense of the word.      each and every day still feeling each punch the other had laid into her , each patrol praying it went smoothly.      but seeing abby now , lev perched behind her with his bow at the ready at his side , it ignited something in her that put her back into that same mindset she had been over a year ago.

it’s when she speaks does the true struggle within begin.      the side of her , the part of her that let abby live that day going against the one that still thirsted for revenge.      twice now the blonde woman and come into her reach and walked away.      was this , being the third time , a sign from the universe ?      or merely a test ?      ellie’s knuckles grow white around her firearm , eyes never once breaking from the all too familiar stranger.      “   and so you think you can just come here of all places like it’s nothing ?   ”      the mention of fireflies leaps over her head.      her rage blinding her from anything but red.      her voice lowers then when she continues on , the same venom as abby’s resting on her tongue.      “   expect no one to find out that you were the one to kill him ?   ”

her hair's grown back some but not enough to braid, and it leaves her feeling uncomfortably fucking vulnerable. unsurprisingly, not a feeling abby's especially comfortable with. she hasn't been since salt lake, and the events since have only made the intensity of the idea that she's got to be nothing but strong increase exponentially. lev safe behind her should help, knowing the other fireflies will have her back ❪ they know everything, she'd told them everything ❫; and yet... facing down ellie again? abby feels as defensive and terrified as ever, fighting for a sense of rationality.

"i told you," she repeats, wearily but with frustration undeniably sinking in, "i told you, i don't want to fucking be here, but i'm not about to give up — " give up another family. give up the only people she's felt safe with since leaving seattle. give up anything else at all. abby doesn't say any of that, though, because she refuses to let ellie see her vulnerable. not when the other is so clearly eager to exploit any fucking weakness she might sense. "i never said that it won't be an adjustment or that i expect people to handle it all nicely," she snaps, "but i wasn't gonna let lev lose someone else, and this is the safest place for him. he never did a damn thing to you," not strictly true, but in the grand scheme of it all, lev is undoubtedly the one who carries the least blame.

"it's picture day at school tomorrow and i don't have anything all that nice to wear. jay, uh, he suggested i borrow something from you. i said i'd ask, but it's totally fine if you say no, i get it,"
