What if OG Elias has one blue and one green eye and it's so pretty and it's his favorite thing about himself and then he and Jonah do a Little Switcheroo and now "Elias" has two perfectly green eyes and absolutely nobody notices because nobody paid enough attention to him or cared enough. What then.

Gotta be real here. Those guilt-trippy "Um actually Dark Academia is problematic, sweaty!" posts never made me dislike dark academia.
You know what did?
Actually reading The Secret History.

"Jonah Magnus did leave him in that place, John. He got the letter, oh yes, and was on good terms with Mordechai Lukas. He could have interceded, perhaps even saved him, but he did not. And it was not out of malice, or because he lacked affection for Barnabas Bennett: he retrieved those bones sadly enough when the time came. Bones that you can still find in my office, if you know where to look." (TMA Ep. 92)

thinking about how traumatic it would be for og!elias to just. wake up one day and be in control of himself again 🥰
like picture it. you've spent the past decades imprisoned in a corner of your own brain, witnessing the horrors your body is gleefully committing, wanting to scream, to kick and yell - maybe to warm the others of what the other part of your mind (the one that's not you) is attempting to do, perhaps to demand that they help you - but no one ever sees you (ha. ironic.)
not even the thing that took over is paying any attention to you. you've fulfilled your purpose. you're as good as dead. so why aren't you?
but then - then you wake up. and you breathe. for the first time in nearly half a century, your lungs fill with air because you decided it. you gasp. you cry. the tears on your cheeks trace grooves in your skin that weren't there the last time you were you. everything hurts. you've lost so much, though not as much as you've taken from others. maybe you care. maybe you don't.
where do you go from here?

Thinking about how balls to the walls insane it is in hindsight that the vitriolic hatred tma fandom had for og elias while the final season was releasing really all stemmed from a single maladjusted friendgroup that eventually ended up imploding

*Grabs you by the throat* Listen to me you TMAGP-loving freaks. Listen to me right now. RedCanary might be the host for this universe's Jonah Magnus.
This is under the assumption that TMAGP takes place in a parallel universe that may or may not have already had the fears in it prior to Jon releasing them at the end of TMA.
RedCanary goes to explore the Magnus Institute ruins. They become paranoid because the Eye is watching them. They pick up a wooden box with strange symbols carved into it. They go to put it back. Next we hear from them, they post an image of gouged out eyes with the caption "Canaries should stay above ground."
They found the tunnels, hence that caption. Then they found Jonah Magnus's body sitting down there, waiting for a new host.
In this universe, the Magnus Institute burned down in 1999. Maybe in this universe Gertrude went through with her original plan of burning the place to the ground after finding out Elias was actually Jonah in 1997. Either way, let's say Jonah's original body is down there, maybe with Elias's body and his eyes and all that, and with his plans foiled, he's just chilling down there waiting for an opportunity which RedCanary then gives him. This is my going theory due to the specificity of the caption "canaries should stay above ground" (referring to the tunnels, and also it being in third-person) and the fact that RedCanary themselves would be pretty unlikely to be able to post that picture of THEIR OWN EYES GOUGED OUT unless it was Magnus assuming their body and identity and being a freak about it.
But there's more.
Narratively speaking, it makes sense for the third voice in the computer to be Jonah Magnus, right? If Jon and Martin ended up in this universe as voices in a computer, the only other person sharing their fate would have to be Magnus, given how TMA ended. Recall, also, the boot-up sequence in the trailer of TMAGP.
Tumblr media
[id: a screenshot of the text from the TMAGP teaser, which says “initializing J.01… OK/initializing M.01… OK/initializing J.02… OK”. end id.]
Jonathan, Martin, and Jonah, right? Unless Augustus is gonna be a new J name or this is just an unrelated easter egg but like. It's Jonah right?? Right??? And he's watching the O.I.R.A through the systems like a good little voyeur, and Colin knows it!
So now we possibly have TWO Jonah Magnuses in this universe!! That's absurd!! One from the TMAGP universe now loose and running around in RedCanary's body, and one from the TMA universe trapped in a computer. But if this is true...doesn't that mean there would be two Jons and Martins too?
And listen...I'm thinking about what Jonny and Alex said during that liveshow panel about this story's themes regarding "what makes a human." If we dare to hope that Jon and Martin (and Jonah, if it's his voice in the computer) are going to gain consciousness and once again become proper characters...then, are they going to simply stay in the computer? Or are they going to "manifest" physically? Are they going to UPLOAD themselves into THEIR OWN TMAGP UNIVERSE BODIES?
@doomatix and I have been going crazy over these theories and they were the one that initially considered RedCanary's new identity as Jonah Magnus. Are our facts wrong? Does any of this even make sense? We haven't seen anyone else posting about this particular theory. Someone help us we are rotting. And don't even get me started on how GWEN would fit into this--

the deeply unsatisfying thing about Jonah's arc is that he, out of all characters, gets relegated to the position of plot device. his agency in causing the apocalypse is completely ignored in favour of feeding into Jon's guilt and sense of responsibility; and since we, the audience, and even the characters themselves, know that it was Jonah who ultimately planned the Ritual, it comes off as rather forced. heaping the blame onto Jon is not only an unfairness to him, but to Jonah himself — the narrative in season 5 utterly fails to acknowledge that Jonah Magnus has been the driving force behind the development of the main character and of the very plot of the show. the Web may have been setting the orchestra in place, but Jonah was very much the conductor.
what little insight we gain into who Jonah was as a person is conveyed through other characters' perceptions of him — which would be interesting on a metatextual level if it had been intentional, in which case I believe the creators would have at the very least given us the protagonist's perspective on the man who shaped him. instead, Jon in season 5 seems remarkably indifferent to Jonah, and seems content to take full responsibility for the fate of the world; which, again, might have been an interesting thing to explore as a character trait, and not as a narrative truth. but I digress.
Jonah himself is a man who is fundamentally so afraid, so utterly terrified of becoming a victim he sacrifices the entire world for a chance at keeping himself safe from fear. he knows someone is bound to figure out the truth of the Rituals and eventually perform a successful one, and he wants, nay, needs to make sure he gets there first. we see him sacrifice every single one of his human connections over several lifetimes for the sake of achieving his goal (it's no coincidence that the non-Eye avatars with closest relations to the Institute are the Lukases; Jonah's terror of powerlessness has led him to viewing every one of his friends and colleagues as sacrificial pawns. it's an awfully Lonely place to be). he knows the world is hurtling towards a balance of stark duality, and seeks to place himself above it. there is so much about him that could have been elaborated on in ways that would have advanced the story.
but even if you don't particularly care for Jonah as a character (to each their own, I suppose), there is no denying his importance to the character of Jon. he made the protagonist. it's unthinkable that Jon would have no feelings towards Jonah other than a vendetta that, even with all the stakes laid out, still comes across as superficial. yet throughout all of s5, there is little to no emotional engagement with the character of Jonah on Jon's part. even Helen is afforded more emotional significance than Jonah, which makes no sense at all.
