“So you’re telling me that this ‘bridge between worlds’ is going to disappear in 10 minutes no not even 10 minutes two minutes now?”
the snake man and the tiny duck nodded.
I could not believe this. This was the most insane thing I had ever experienced or dreamed or whatever this is in my entire life. I looked at the water on the other side, appeared down.
“Why can’t I just,you know, swim?”
The snake man shook his head and did what I could only describe as a grimace.
softly he said, “In those waters, well, in those *particular* waters, there is a creature. After a certain period of time, once the bridge leaves, that water could hurt us, and the creature could be awakened.”
He then looked back up at me now, his eyes deep thought, “but it might not hurt you.”
I watched as all the living, plush sheep, cows, and ducks all dashed away. I watched the pedestrians run about and hide into their homes. I looked behind me and could see the bridge fading right before my eyes. If this was dreaming, I definitely needed to figure out a way to wake up.
Before I knew it, the bridge was gone. I had to be on shore and I was stuck in whatever realm this was. After mildly panicking, the snake man told me there might be another way to get out. He told me that the bridge moves around to it’s own timeline, something equivalent to the phases of the moon. He said that some people are able to track it, and showed me on a very confusing map where it should be next. He gave me a tiny slip of paper, although it looked more like leather or parchment, and he said to go to this bus stop if I followed it it would take me someplace else. If I got off on the first stop, I should be able to find somebody there who could help.
This was a little bit vague, but I got the idea so I found the bus stop. It got dark. The sky here was strange to say the least; the clouds were odd. The sky did not have the same colors. Sometimes I thought I saw multiple moons. The sun sometimes looked more like an eye. Sometimes I swear I heard voices coming from the clouds or so shapes in them. It felt misty but the mist felt sticky.
The first bus that approached I knew was not mine. My heart thundered when I saw it and the children that approached it.
I had not heard them.
I had not seen them until they moved from around me.
The bus just seemed to appear from out of the fog The town around me at this point seemed completely asleep. I couldn’t see past a few feet on the road and the traffic light seemed broken the few children that came up to the bus for eerie. I saw the long stringy hair from one and at first I thought maybe this kid just had a bad day or maybe this kid just didn’t like baths. However when the kid turned and looked at me, I saw its eyes. They were very wide and they were pitch black, and when the kid laughed, I saw rose of sharp, pointy teeth, . I swear I saw another child that had a tail that swished back-and-forth nails like long talons for nails that clicked on the handle of the door.
When my bus got there, I was incredibly nervous. At first, I thought there might be more school children, but that’s when I realized these were elderly people and college kids. Two football players zoomed up, and they looked like they were wearing werewolf costumes under their jerseys. I waited and waited for everybody to board the bus before I braved myself up to get on. I tried to tell myself it was just a strange Halloween party. That’s when I saw somebody else who needed to get on. There’s another woman there who looked somewhere about my age. For a moment, she made eye contact with me before she crossed the street. She had long dark black hair and she wore tall black boots. She looked like a goth, biker, chick I was really jealous of the way that she wore her make up. She was gorgeous and intimidating and I also couldn’t tell if the ears on her head were real or a costume.
“Looks like we’re the last ones,” she said, nudging me forward. “If you want you can sit with me. I don’t bite.”
She probably meant it as a joke, but still made me a little nervous and in either case, once I walked onto the bus I could tell there was only one open seat left for two people, so that’s where I went. The back at the bus, to the very last seat. guess we had to see what happens next.

The tall cloaked man turned, and for a moment I saw the side of his face, and I understood why what I perceived as a hood was shaped the way that it was. The man’s head was more like a snake than a human. I caught the faint glimmer of scales And strange reptilian eyes. He appeared down at the strange circular pit in the ground. Others stood with him dressed in robes, while pedestrians walked around behind, minding their own business. The murmurings behind me began- that’s when he looked at me and he asked me in a surprisingly warm and soft, voice, “Do you know what this is?”
I shook my head and said that I didn’t. He didn’t seem surprised at that then he turned from me and the others who were dressed similarly as him began to look closer at the pit I moved a little bit closer as he gestured because I didn’t get frightening vibes from him. There was a light emanating from the pit and something about it felt different from the rest of this place something about it felt warm in fact the light almost I don’t know glowed somehow twinkle. Then suddenly the light inside grew larger and larger as if a giant wave were coming out of it. A large golden wave grew higher and higher larger than the peoples heads, but then just as it had just as quickly as it had begun, it stopped and splashed back down into the pit. The people stopped me, and I could hear the disappointed silence around me. The rest of the road figures went away. All I could hear were their footsteps.
Glancing over at him reluctantly, I asked, “What was that?”
The snake like man looked back at me he let out a loud, exasperated sigh. I could tell he was disappointed, but not surprised. He lowered his head and close his eyes. “The gods have abandoned us.” His voice was just as soft as before. “I suppose we deserved it once, but sometimes I hope that Well sometimes I hope & pray that they would listen.” After that he was silent.

"Ok, ma'am that'll be $226.03."
I take my wallet out of my pocket and unfold it. It is empty other than a single moth that lazily flies out. The moth lands on the tap point of the card reader. There's a beat, and my payment is processed. The moth flies back into my wallet and I put it back in my pocket.
