Meming to keep from crying
At work, I post perhaps too many memes. I like them because a picture “says a thousand words.” And, sometimes, the picture works better in my haste to express raw emotion. Most of the time, these come from intense frustration, so the humor of a meme interjected into the seriousness helps me feel better. The reactions conveyed by my colleagues say they do as well. I will take the small wins.…

Five months into Trump's presidency, and we are in a war.
Did his supporters have that on the bingo card?

A good rule of thumb for AI is "would you trust a trained pigeon to do this?"
"We trained a pigeon to recognise cancerous cell clusters and somehow they're really good at it" okay great, that's something that could plausibly be a thing.
"We trained a pigeon to recognise good CV:s and left it in charge of sorting through all our job applications" uh perhaps consider not doing that.

Cable television worked this way. Television shows were 43 minutes an hour because 17 minutes were commercials. When I canceled, I was paying $250 a month.
I liked HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, and Starz because they didn't have commercials during the show.
Each premium service was like $2 per channel they provided. For regular cable, it was under $1.
I read a cable executive 20 years ago upset about piracy and claiming that watching the commercials was part of the social contract for how cheap cable was. To remove the commercials, they'd need to double or more what they charge. The commercials offset their costs.
“paid subscription with ads” is fucking crazy. if you pay for a service and then get served an ad on said service you should be allowed to pipe bomb its executive at no legal risk

The lone detention was reportedly conducted by Marines sent to guard the Wilshire Federal Building, a 17-story office building on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. Video of the incident shows Marines in full combat gear and automatic weapons zip-tying an unresisting man — clad in shorts, a T-shirt, and sunglasses — on the ground. At one point, the detainee, with his hands bound behind him, is surrounded by no fewer than six Marines and two other officials who appear to be federal security guards.   The man, Marcos Leao, was not involved in any protest. The former Army combat engineer, who gained U.S. citizenship through his military service, told Reuters that he was in a rush to get to an appointment in the Veterans Affairs office inside the Federal Building. When he crossed a strand of caution tape, he found an armed Marine sprinting toward him.
TL;DR: The 5K troops have only detained a veteran going to a VA appointment who crossed caution tape. No protestors.

Ping management
A scene I love from The Hunt for Red October was the communication through sonat pings. Later, when I worked in IT, the use of SNMP pings became a core part of my troubleshooting an issue. I thought of this scene every time. Photo by Dženis Hasanica on Pexels.com These days, another form is most of my work with humans. These are all a form of a ping: Asking for an update. Following up on that…

After days of listening to the tech billionaire criticize his ‘Big Beautiful Bill,’ President Donald Trump escalated his feud with Elon Musk Friday by nuking Mars. “Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave, and then I blew up his stupid planet that no one else cared about,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social just moments after launching the entire U.S.
