Meta adds new Calls tab to its Messenger app for iOS and Android https://ift.tt/ucbYsrJ
Tumblr media
The Call tab will be available at the bottom portion of the user interface in the Messenger app | Image: Meta
Meta is rolling out a new ‘Calls’ tab globally in its Messenger app for iOS and Android users. The new tab will keep track of each call you make or receive in the app in one place and make it easier to connect calls with one tap. Also, for people who don’t regularly use the feature, it adds a clear reminder that they can use the app for voice or video calls in addition to text-based messaging.
In 2014, Facebook pulled messaging out of the main Facebook app, pushing mobile users to download a separate one to continue using the feature as part of its push to make Messenger a singular experience. The video call feature arrived in 2015, followed by cross-app messaging with Instagram and eventually cross-app group chats. Most recently, it a...

Meta’s head of AI to depart in group reorg https://ift.tt/kznmL3F

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge
A day after Sheryl Sandberg announced she is leaving as Meta’s COO later this year, the company is losing another executive amid a reorganization of its artificial intelligence group.
Jerome Pesenti, Meta’s VP of AI for the past four years, will leave later this month as the company closer integrates his AI teams across various product groups rather than have AI function as a centralized organization. AI is already used for everything from ordering what you see when you open Facebook and Instagram to the software powering the Oculus VR headset. The change is meant to “leverage the newest AI technology at scale” across the company, said Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth in a post announcing the reorg.
The AI research team led by Yann LeCun,...

Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg is stepping down after 14 years https://ift.tt/Gv9hZWD

Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Meta Platforms, announced in a post on Facebook that, after 14 years, she’s stepping down from her position as its second-ranking executive but will retain a seat on the board. Sandberg will leave her post in the fall after spending the next few months working with founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg to transition her direct reports.
In a separate Facebook post, Mark Zuckerberg called the change an “end of an era” and said that he doesn’t plan to replace Sandberg’s role in the company’s structure. This will further consolidate power of the company under his control, which he’s shared with Sandberg since she joined the company in 2008 to help its then-23-year-old CEO navigate the path to an IPO....

Facebook and Instagram’s parent company will change its stock ticker to META on June 9th https://ift.tt/DHMvtkI
Tumblr media
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge
When the company formerly known as Facebook announced its plan to rebrand last October, it also announced a new stock ticker. At the time, execs said that after ten years as FB, its NASDAQ listing would transition to MVRS for the metaverse. However, after the investment fund listed under META vacated the symbol in January, Meta Platforms quickly confirmed that it would use META instead, while at the same time announcing its first drop in daily active users, ever. Now it has filed paperwork saying the shift will become official before the market opens on June 9th (via CNBC).
Right now, people still think of Meta as the home of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, but the plan is to make it into much more than those social media mainstays....

Meta rewrites privacy policy but says it won’t collect data in ‘new ways’ https://ift.tt/YdjX4u6

Meta’s new Privacy Policy menu | Image: Meta
As it occasionally does, the company formerly known as Facebook has produced a new revision of its Terms of Service and updated its privacy policy. The old Facebook Data Policy is now Meta’s Privacy Policy, rewritten “to make it easier to understand and to reflect the latest products we offer.”
With this revision, Meta “is not collecting, using or sharing your data in new ways based on this policy update and we still do not sell your information,” according to the company. Instead, this update tweaks the language and adds examples to help people understand what each segment is about.
“the status quo is not good for privacy”
After reading through the new policy and comparing it to the old one, this appears to hold up, for better or...

Instagram is having some problems today https://ift.tt/1IsaF2c
Tumblr media
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge
If you’re having trouble accessing Instagram right now, you are not the only one. Reports across the internet note issues with Meta’s more-than-just-pictures app, with many people seeing screens saying they’re not logged in, blank image posts, “Welcome to Instagram” messages like they have a brand new account, or feeds that stop loading after the first few pictures. Many Verge staffers are seeing similar issues while trying to access Instagram.
There doesn’t appear to be any acknowledgment of an issue from Instagram, Facebook, or their parent company so far. The outage doesn’t appear to be tied to any specific area, and other services are still working.

Google’s ad dominance targeted by a second probe from the UK’s competition watchdog https://ift.tt/OcYuJr9
Tumblr media
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched a new investigation into Google’s advertising business over fears the company is unfairly freezing out competitors. It’s the second open probe the CMA has on Google, following the announcement in March of a joint investigation with the EU over alleged collusion between Google and Facebook-owner Meta.
The new investigation will dive deep into the “ad tech stack” — the collection of tools that make up the complex online ad market. The CMA notes that Google has “strong positions at various levels of the ad tech stack,” and is examining three key elements where the US company is the largest player. These include the market used by companies to advertise their ad space; the ad...

Tumblr media
illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge
If you’ve finally given up on the world’s most popular social media network, it’s not too complicated to remove yourself from the service. But before you delete all of those pictures, posts, and likes, you should download your personal information from Facebook.
Your Facebook archives contain just about all of the pertinent information related to your account, including your photos, active sessions, chat history, IP addresses, facial recognition data, and which ads you clicked, just to name a few. That’s a ton of personal information that you should probably maintain access to.
To download your archive using the web:
Click on the down arrow in the upper-right corner.
Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
In the left-hand column, click...

Snap plans to slow hiring, warns that revenue will grow slower than expected https://ift.tt/zbCOQHY
Tumblr media
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel.
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel told employees Monday that the company would significantly slow hiring for the rest of the year after warning investors that its revenue wouldn’t grow as fast as expected.
“Like many companies, we continue to face rising inflation and interest rates, supply chain shortages and labor disruptions, platform policy changes, the impact of the war in Ukraine, and more,” Spiegel wrote in a memo to employees obtained by The Verge. He went on to say that Snap expects to report revenue below the low-end of the guidance it gave investors for the current quarter. That news was also disclosed in a filing with the SEC that sent Snap’s stock price cratering to a low it hasn’t seen since mid-2020.
Like its larger competitor in...

It’s been over two years since COVID-19 made its way around the world, and while the state of emergency has let up somewhat, many of us are still relying on video calls to keep in touch with work colleagues, family, and friends. Zoom continues to top the list of videoconferencing apps, but there are a bunch of other free applications out there that will allow you to meet others online. So, in order to help you choose which you’d like to use, we’ve listed a few of the best videoconferencing apps along with a couple of popular text chat apps that include video calling features.
There are a number of apps we have not included, such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and FaceTime, that allow you to do video chats. We’ve left them out because they...

DC attorney general sues Mark Zuckerberg over Cambridge Analytica scandal https://ift.tt/XMQT7FZ
Tumblr media
District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine has sued Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the Facebook Cambridge Analytica scandal. The suit alleges that Zuckerberg was “directly responsible” for creating the lax privacy rules that allowed the consulting firm to harvest user data without consent, then failing to promptly inform users and ensure the data was deleted. It follows a failed attempt to name Zuckerberg in a similar suit against Facebook itself.
Racine’s fundamental accusations haven’t changed since the earlier filing last year. The suit covers an incident in which University of Cambridge professor Aleksandr Kogan collected personal information from around 270,000 Facebook users plus data from friends who hadn’t consented to the...

Tumblr media
Controversial facial recognition company Clearview AI has been ordered to delete all data belonging to UK residents by the country’s privacy watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). The ICO also fined Clearview £7.5 million ($9.4 million) for failing to follow the UK’s data protection laws.
It’s the fourth time Clearview has been ordered to delete national data in this way, following similar orders and fines issued in Australia, France, and Italy.
Clearview claims to have scraped 20 billion images from sources like Facebook and Instagram
Clearview claims its facial recognition database contains some 20 billion images scraped from public sources like Facebook and Instagram. It previously sold its software to an array of...
